Big Fish didn’t make my list. I enjoy it enough and like to watch it every 3-4 years but .. it’s also pretty stupid. I’ve see it 4-5 times and I still have to ask myself what the heck I just watched. I want to say I saw it on the exact same day that I saw Second Hand Lions and boy.. did SHL put Big Fish to shame. It’s hard to recover from a beatdown like that.

Great post JTJ. And 🤯 the Cowardly Lion was I believe the only one not to get tortured or attacked by the monkeys. Yet he just stayed back and watched his friends/family get brutalized. Like a pussy (cat).

Time for son to step up and be the man of the house. Already done. His little baby erections have already been causing me excruciating penis envy. And yes, Ness, baby erections ARE a thing. Look it up.

Yes it was Wizard of Oz , good guesses by all. It was hard finding clues that didn't make it obvious but I was hoping the 1957 would throw some people off along with the fact they expected it to be higher. Sneaky bastard.

I really like Ferris Bueller's Day Off , not quite enough to make my personal Top 100 but it is my second favorite Hughes film and one that I consider one of the best and easiest lazy weekend movies because you can literally pick it up anywhere and enjoy it for everything it is. It surprises me that this is the first time it's ever shown up on a list - I've always perceived it as one of the more iconic or landmark 80's teen films.
Anyways it's just a fun romp , Broderick is perfect as Ferris but not nearly as perfect as Ruck is with Cameron who kind of steals the movie. Sloane Peterson is great girlfriend in the movie who's just along for the ride as well. Jeffrey Jones personal life doesn't age well at all but he was a good villain with Mr. Rooney and the scene where he's in his office talking to Cameron on the phone is great. Also love Jennifer Grey and her turn at the end.
For a certain demo this might be higher , but for PW I'm not too shocked at it's ranking. As I said - it's never appeared on a list that I can remember.

Rewind...
What is with the hate for Big Fish?
It's the most life affirming movie of it's time that celebrates just how wonderful life can be when you view it from the right perspective. Ewan McGregor is fantastic as Edward Bloom, this big fish from a small pond who led this rags from riches lifestyle. The older Edward Bloom who is on his death bed, Albert Finney is fantastic as the older version of Edward and really gives the character that larger than life quality which makes the father-son relationship with Billy Crudup's character (who was also done dirty on this countdown, more on that later) all the more wholesome.
I can see why it isn't everyone's favourite movie. There really isn't much conflict in the movie, it's just about Crudup's character coming to terms with his father and trying to understand his tall tales weren't about hiding who he really is, because being a story-teller IS what set him a part. I think if there was some Great Gatsby type drama it would have helped the movie for some, but I don't think the movie needed anything like that.
The tall tales are all wonderfully shot and choreographed. It's one of Burton's most visually appearing and striking films of his filmography and just a real feel good film. It's one of those movies I like to watch around the holidays just to inspire myself, similar to It's A Wonderful Life and the like.
The fact it doesn't get flogged as a classic movie helps as well. I'd say it's a 7/10 type movie, but for me it's a 10/10. I love seeing the world in Edward's eyes and shaping a narrative.

I'll sign off on this for Ferris Bueller. 9.Bladerunner 14.The Dirty Dozen 23.Trading Places 27.Logan 43.Man on Fire 54.Braveheart 57.The Avengers 84. Scarface 85.Heat 87.Full Metal Jacket 90.True Lies 99. The Wizard of OzClassic movie which was groundbreaking in so many ways. Just about every live action fantasy film that follows owes a debt to this movie. Also a lot of classic movies can feel dated to watch but I never get that feeling watching Wizard of Oz.

Reading Big Pete 's post about Big Fish makes me think we watched two very different movies. His sounds like a great movie. Unfortunately, I didn't pick up on the same emotions and nuances. I'm almost tempted to watch it again...almost.

I like both of these movies. The Wizard of Oz and Ferris Bueller's Day Off were both under consideration for my list before ultimately being late cuts. Both would have cracked my Top 110. Looking over that list now....Oof! Yeah, they both probably should have made it. Count me in as another one who watched The Wizard of Oz once a year with my family growing up. That yearly Wizard of Oz airing was An Event. Love the transformation from drab black and white to beautiful color. Great gimmick that got over the contrast between mundane, every day Kansas and the Magical Land of Oz. This movie popularized a ton of tropes and had a major impact on pop culture. Thing is... It's been such a long time since I watched it. We're talking early-mid 90s. Yeah, I suck. UT calling Ferris Bueller "a romp" is the perfect description. This movie is just a whole lot of fun. I see it as something of a spiritual predecessor to Wayne's World, which finished ridiculously high on my list. I definitely have a soft spot for those fun teen movies of the 80s and 90s. Fun Fact: First time I ever saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off was in school, of all places. Iirc my class achieved some sort of goal and this was our reward.

I think Ferris was one of my last minute cuts. I think I want to like it more than I actually do. It has this real melancholic feel to it. I mean, it’s fun and exciting at times and I love a whole lot about it. But it deals with depression and loathsome attitudes and may have even touched on Suicide there for a bit also. I don’t want that in my feel good day off from school movie. Bring the laughs and I don’t care how much it makes the characters feel more real.. leave that stuff for dramas. It’s a real downer if I’m dealing with my own fights with depression at the time.

I'm happy enough that all the standard, "classic" American comedies are filling the 200-100 spots rather than the Top 100. I worry about Step Brother's placement though...

I don’t think there is a single line from Billy Madison that I can’t quote from memory. I probably saw it a thousand times and is easily the movie I’ve seen most in my life. When I was 12 I thought it was the greatest thing in the world. I’m 36 now and I think you’d have to be 12 to like it. Such a silly movie.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles on the other hand. That’s a comedy made for people who have reached adulthood. Timeless. Love it. I have already mentioned my oversight on not having it on my list which is a shame. It deserves to be.

Buckle in , you’re going to be waiting another 142 spots for Step Brothers. I don't doubt it. Ness probably gave it a #1 vote. No accounting for taste I guess. I like PT&A but I don't love it. It probably would have made a top 200 for me. I do think it does make Hughes Mt. Rushmore though (The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day off, PT&A and Sixteen Candles) Billy Madison on the other hand....ugggh. One of my least favorite Sandler movies. Only scene I really liked is this one. That being said, I can't deny it's success, and TBH it probably makes Sandler's Mt. Rushmore. (Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer, and Punch Drunk Love to show his range)
