Bakers guess is in!
14/20 movies correct. One in the correct spot for 16 points.
I'll say this , Baker was pretty spot on in his order , had he just moved on movie he would have damn near nailed like a 6 movie stretch.

The closer this thing gets to the end, the more worried I am that the Notebook is going to appear. I'm not against a Nicholas Sparks appearing on the list, I'd just hope that it'd be a better one than that. There is no better Nicholas Sparks than The Notebook.

There is no better Nicholas Sparks than The Notebook. Message in a Bottle and Nights in the Rodanthe were both better. Depending on my mood, I sometimes even want to watch A Walk to a Remember more. There is a possibility there that it may be because Mandy is high on my favorite actress list. Highly disagree.
Spoilers for chick flicks ahead.
{Spoiler} Now I know not every movie has to end with a happy ending, but Nicholas Sparks is the king of shitty endings. Seriously, do any of his books/movies end without one of the main characters biting it? Right up there with City of Angels when Nicholas Cage gives up everything to be with Meg Ryan only for her to be turfed by a semi. Hot garbage!
At least the Notebook you find out the characters have had a good life together even if it wasn't perfect (much like life). The man goes through the same story over and over again just to see a glimpse of the woman he loves. To me the story and ending of The Notebook deals with loss in a much more realistic and current way. The loss of losing someone to dementia/Alzheimer's and watching them become someone else when you retain all your memories and feelings of your love and life. Beautiful.

The Godfather (3) is incredible. Nearly every scene feels like a classic. Those who don't care for it are clearly exposing a lack of class.
Jaws (156) is great. Never really had that extra something to make me think of it as absolutely elite. I find it difficult to imagine saying any film making the top 25 of a giant list is too low - that's a great showing. I had The Godfather at #3 and think it had a great showing here.
Predator (286) is great fun, well made, tremendously researchable. Very surprised at how high it has ranked here.
Not surprised by Wolf of Wall Street (556) since I know people love that film, but it has never done too much for me. Clearly well made, with fine actors in it and I'd say it is a good movie, but no more than that. I didn't really feel the excitement like others, I didn't really care for the characters and more importantly didn't have all that much fun watching their exploits, unlike say Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

I like Ghostbusters , it's a staple of the 80's pop culture and an easy rewatch. I'm also a weirdo who still prefers the sequel for some reason , probably because it had more of a cable run back in the day and the villain was actually quite freaky.
Surprised it placed so high , not because it doesn't deserve it but because it's a movie that rarely seemed to fair well in other countdowns. At the end of the day I can't fight it too hard , it's iconic as all hell and a whole generations favorite film.

I too prefer the sequel. Also, I too am surprised Ghostbusters placed so high.

14. Ghostbusters
Maybe it resonates more for me because I grew up with it. I think I was in elementary when it came out. I think to date it is still one of my most watched movies. Top 5 for sure.
I'd say this is the movie that launched Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd and even in some respects Sigourney Weaver (pre Aliens) and Rick Moranis.
Huge impact on Pop Culture that lead to sequels, toys and even a cartoon.

I forgot that many are the generation after me so I guess I should have bumped it down a few more notches. Ghostbusters was a huge part of my childhood. It is a great blend of superb comedy writing with an interesting sci-fi premise. With the proper third installment delayed the original has been on seemingly every weekend and guess what? I've watched it in whole or in part every damn time.

Yeah I don’t think it was really anyone’s breakout role , except maybe Moranis and Hudson. The rest were fairly well established and successful at that point. Stripes was a huge success , so much so that the studio handed them 25 Million to make Ghostbusters because of Murray and Reitman with Ramis and Aykroyd being attached. Pretty interesting stuff in Movies That Made Us on Netflix.

Alien being seven years prior surely is more evocative of being an actual breakout role though. Aliens may have launched her into a different stratosphere but OG Alien gets the credit for her breakout role.

I don't know if I can add much more to what's already been said. Ghostbusters is a landmark movie for my childhood and I suspect the same is true for my fellow Gen-Xers Ironmaiden and Shootist. It's fantastically written, perfectly paced, and has great performances from the entire cast.
For Mt. Rushmore it makes it for pretty much the entire cast. And for Ivan Reitman as well.

You are correct about Weaver. I forgot that Alien came out in 1979. For some reason I thought it came out after Ghostbusters so I was thinking of the 1986 sequel. My bad. The Alien franchise never appealed to me so honestly I had no idea she existed until Ghostbusters. After that Working Girl and Gorillas in The Mist. Most of her movie roles outside of those have been largely forgettable for me, which is a shame as I've always enjoyed her.
However, you ask people which films they remember Bill Murray in and they'll say Ghostbusters and Caddyshack first. Maybe Stripes, but I can tell you far more people have watched Ghostbusters than they have Stripes or Meatballs. It appealed to a broader audience.
Same with Ackroyd. Sure he was known for his SNL fame and The Blues Brothers but Ghostbusters was his next big role and again appealed to a broader audience than The Blues Brothers did, at least at that time.
Maybe it didn't launch them per say, but I'd definitely say it's one of their most recognizable roles still after all these years. On their 'Rushmore' if you will.

Oh I won’t argue it’s more recognizable , that’s a fact because GB is a staple of the 80s and pop culture. I just don’t think it would be breakouts.

Bill Murray is Groundhog Day first and foremost. Ghostbusters a somewhat distant second, he's not as associated with that movie since it's more of an ensemble cast. Caddyshack...maybe in North America, but I don't think the movie is well-known outside.

Ghostbusters is surely the more resonant movie overall and a much bigger deal in pop culture history. Not too mention it plays to a wider audience.

Ghostbusters (108) was a near miss for my list and I'd be surprised if it wouldn't make my top 20 favourites. Just a perfect storm. Great talents in a fun concept, Murray allowed to riff, memorable characters and moments, dry and sarcastic humour throughout. And while it is a comedy, the correct stuff is played seriously to make it all work. I have a soft spot for the sequel as well. I did not realise how poorly many thought of it until a few years ago. It is weak in some regards, but I love Vigo. It is another of those films where in the mid-90s to early-00s, it was played on TV way more over here than the original. Ghostbusters II. Die Hard with a Vengeance. Back to the Future III. Gremlins 2. Poltergeist 2. Predator 2 was another. I'm not even totally sure if I've seen Critters, maybe only Critters 2. Bill Murray is Groundhog Day first and foremost. Ghostbusters a somewhat distant second, he's not as associated with that movie since it's more of an ensemble cast. Caddyshack...maybe in North America, but I don't think the movie is well-known outside. I don't see it. Ghostbusters is a monster. Go on the streets and ask 100 people to name the first Bill Murray film that comes to mind and I'd be surprised if Ghostbusters was not top. I'd expect it to be by a fair bit. I completely missed The Sting (26 on my list) chat way back and does anyone else feel like it is the smallest huge film ever? It won Best Picture. Adjusted for inflation, it is the 21st highest grossing film in North American history. People were obviously hyped to see Newman/Redford again after Butch Cassidy and then you'd have the great critical reviews and great word of mouth on top. But did anyone know it was so huge? It feels like a film that everyone knows is a classic, but no one would talk about it as a gigantic film when it clearly was.

I know there is a disconnect between the states and ACROSS THE POND with some movies , does Ghostbusters fall into that area?
The song , the toy lines , the costumes , the cartoons ... Ghostbusters was gigantic. As much as I stuck up for Groundhogs Day needing to be on Murray’s Rushmore - I don’t think it’s anywhere near Ghostbusters in terms of popularity and importance to the culture.
The more I think about it I’m not even sure it’s a 1A / 1B scenario. Groundhog Day in terms of resonance is a distant second.

I know there is a disconnect between the states and ACROSS THE POND with some movies , does Ghostbusters fall into that area? Nope. Highest grossing film of 1984 in the UK. Cartoon series on the telly. Kids had the toys. And this is in the early 90s. ---------------------------- One Hundred and One Dalmatians had its original theatrical run in 1961, then runs in 1969, 1979, 1985 and 1991. I don't know how common this was for other Disney films, but it seems to have been the case for Fantasia as well, which only started to make a profit on its huge budget after its 1969 run, 29 years after its original release.
