So how many of you guys tried to play Ghostbusters? I distinctly remember in my much younger days getting some of the toys to play but having to try and fashion other stuff , like the collection box thing myself.
Also loved the cartoon.

I know there is a disconnect between the states and ACROSS THE POND with some movies , does Ghostbusters fall into that area? Nope. Highest grossing film of 1984 in the UK. Cartoon series on the telly. Kids had the toys. And this is in the early 90s. ---------------------------- One Hundred and One Dalmatians had its original theatrical run in 1961, then runs in 1969, 1979, 1985 and 1991. I don't know how common this was for other Disney films, but it seems to have been the case for Fantasia as well, which only started to make a profit on its huge budget after its 1969 run, 29 years after its original release. Big Pete would be the better person to ask on Disney. I know there are some sites that list the money made from rereleases , even ones like Star Wars and such see their numbers go up but I don’t believe it makes up the majority of their box office.

Fair enough. I was born too late to see all the Ghostbusters hype first hand. Have a vague awareness of the cartoon. It's definitely a household name in the UK, as is Groundhog Day, but clearly Ghostbusters is way bigger than I thought.

Never seen GB. Plan to.
As a somewhat 80s kid (born the year of the movie) I do remember the merch just being everywhere. Hell, I got a Slimer plush in the back of my car ala the way some boomer cat ladys do beanie babies.
The backpack vac to this day gives me GB comments at work... the trap... Stay Puft. Despite never seeing it I feel like I have somehow...

This guy right here! Friends with more spoiling parents bought them all the actual licensed merchandise. Meanwhile, I was left to jerry-rig my own outfit and gear. But we were all equals when we'd get together to hunt imaginary ghosts. Biggest fights were over who got to portray which Ghostbuster.

I don’t even remember what I used , probably a hand decorated shoe box or something but I remember it being awesome. I don’t think I cared too much about which GB I was because I’m sure my love for it initially came from the cartoon.

Bill Murray is Groundhog Day first and foremost. Ghostbusters a somewhat distant second, he's not as associated with that movie since it's more of an ensemble cast. Caddyshack...maybe in North America, but I don't think the movie is well-known outside. LOL say what??? Ghostbusters is WAAAY more impactul than Groundhog Day ever was. You mention Bill Murray and the first movie that comes to most people's minds is easily Ghostbusters.

Yes, there was a classmate (who slightly resembled Egon) and his younger brother that had almost all the toys and had enough proton packs and traps for 4 people. I was usually Ray while the younger brother was Winston. We had rotating more gregarious friends as Venkman. I only had a few of the figures while the firehouse playset was regularly on my Christmas list but was ever elusive. I mentioned in the cartoon thread that the Real Ghostbusters was a part of the regular rotation on Sunday afternoons. I then found it on Netflix but alas only 5 episodes in it got pulled.

Did I have Ghostbusters on my list? Is the atomic weight of cobalt 58.9? 19. Ghostbusters- So proud of PW for this one. I didn't even guess Ghostbusters when I sent my list into UT yesterday. I stupidly thought Ghostbusters was more likely to get shut out than make the Top 20. PW coming through big time. I obviously love Ghostbusters. Have seen it oodles of times including right before sending my list into UT. All 4 'Busters (and friends) bring something to the table with Bill Murray as Peter Venkman being the standout. Ghostbusters included many memorable scenes, quotes I still use to this day, and an iconic theme song provided by Ray Parker Jr. Fun Fact: A few months back I discovered William Atherton, who played loathsome obstructive bureaucrat Walter Peck, had real life heat with people harassing him on the streets and challenging him to fights in bars after the movie came out. I do prefer the original to the sequel, but just barely. Had the original at #19, the sequel at #20, and Groundhog Day at #21 to complete the Bill Murray trifecta. Like jTjohncenaGOAT, I too went through an unfortunate phase of forgetting about Ghostbusters from about 1992 to my first day of college. I wandered into the wrong class on that very first day- ECON 101 to be exact. Mentioned it to my friend Matt The IRS Fan. He replied with "Egon? Like the Ghostbuster?" That reminded me of Ghostbusters. Watched it asap for the first time in a few years and never looked back. Agree with everybody putting over the bigness of Ghostbusters. It was a huge part of my generation and the one that followed. Ghostbusters was everywhere for a few years. Ray & Winston will be happy to know Ghosbusters was even bigger than He Man. I may be the only person in history to actually be terrified by Ghostbusters. First time I watched it was at my grandparents house not long after it came out on video. I did not like scary movies as a kid. When Dana Barrett opened her fridge I was DONE. Went into the next room. Buried my head in the pillows. Didn't look up until it was time to leave. I also spent YEARS being afraid to open the refrigerator door if it was too early in the morning or too late at night. I was taking no chances when it came to Zuul potentially showing up where the milk should be. Strobe Completely agree with you about The Sting. I like it (made the low end of my list), and knew it was a classic, but had no idea it was such a box office smash. I surprisingly don't remember playing Ghostbusters all that much. Had some of the toys and an ECTO 1 Christmas ornament though. Still have a Ghostbusters shirt, too. My cousin had adorable Ghostbusters pajamas. I also convinced my other cousin (his sister) that I had an invisible blue dog named Ferdinand. This was an idea inspired by the GB cartoon. I wrote an even longer love letter to the entire Ghostbusters franchise in the Cartoon Thread. But that's enough for now.

I had Ghostbusters II at 61 right behind Back To The Future III at 60. It was a solid sequel that has got better over time, plus the villain was an ex pro wrestler.

Ghostbusters was my 11. I remember going to see it at the brand new cinema 3 in my hometown but it was sold out. We saw Cannonball Run 2 instead.

I had The Wolf of Wall Street on my list! Yay!! Absolutely loved this movie. Leo and Margot today was awesome, let alone the rest of the incredible cast. Brilliant storyline, that doesn’t feel as long as it’s actual duration.
I did enjoy some other movies listed but they weren’t on my list, or even close to it.

Fucking Fight Club.
I don't hate it as much as Step Brothers as a movie, but the amount of "best film ever" praise it gets produces a similar amount of loathing within me.
Fuck your rule number 1 meme, I will talk about Fight Club just to say it's shit.

I like Fight Club a lot and it made the bottom half of my list , it was a hard movie to rank for me and needs some rewatches I think. It's a movie I put off forever and I'm glad I did because I don't think I could have fully appreciated it at a younger age.
I would still say that it's Pitt's most iconic role and performance and most important to his career - Durden is considered to be one of the best movie characters of all time and his portrayal is a huge reason why. Yes other movie like Seven paved the way but Fight Club is where his career really probably took off.
Also could say the same for Fincher , probably the biggest movie of his career - not at the box office but to solidify him as one of the premiere directors of this generation. Like Pitt , Seven laid the groundwork and Fight Club just brought him to a different level and this movie is brilliantly directed and needed an overthinking like Fincher I think to make the concept work.
Not surprised to see it Top 20 at all , wouldn't have been shocked if it was Top 10.
Also to not in PW Top Ten History: This was the movie that sparked the inane term pseudo-intellectual. So it's a very important movie in terms of Top Ten history as well.

I get the best movie ever loathing , I get that way too with some movies and I don't think Fight Club quite deserves that high of praise - but it is a really good fucking movie.

I feel like I maybe owe this a rewatch, as I think I've done the same 180 on it as I had on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It gets its dick sucked so hard that the spite monster in me finds myself recollecting that it certainly can't be THAT good. At least not better than Se7en, right?! But then I realize I haven't seen it since high school, and it resonated so much with me back then... I feel I owe it a rewatch to be fair with my opinion on it. And maybe, just like ESotSM, I end up doing another 180 to complete a full 360 and realize that I rightfully loved it all along.
NOTE: Went with the "it" pronoun as seemingly the best available workaround to not violate Rule #1.

My better there was meant purely as a subjective comment on quality of movie, personal preference, etc. Objectively, Se7en is the distance #2 to REDACTED's that Groundhog Day is to Ghostbusters' #1.

What is #1 for Norton? Fight Club OR American History X? That’s tough. Performance wise I think they are pretty equal , popularity it’s Fight Club hands down. American History X is a really tough rewatch too where as Fight Club gets better after rewatches.

They're both equally brilliant performances. I don't know if AHX is going to make the countdown yet, so I will refrain from going on a verbal ejaculation of the movie quite yet. But hopefully me forgetting to put the movie on my list, which is pissing me THE FUCK OFF to be honest, I would love to see it ranked this high on the list. It would've probably been in between the 15-19 area of my list.

Easily one of the most overrated films by PW.....and I actually enjoy Fight Club quite a bit. But a top 20 film of all-time?.....not even close. This should have been in the 100-70 range at best.
And while this is definitely a Rushmore film for Pitt, the idea that this was a star-making role for him is ludicrous. Pitt was already a massive star when he was cast as Tyler Durden. He had already been in Interview with the Vampire, Legands of the Fall, Seven, Twelve Monkeys, and Sleepers well before being in Fight Club. He was already an A list star and Fight Club just took things further.
Matter of fact, I would say it was more important for Edward Norton than it was for Brad Pitt. For Norton's Mt Rushmore I would have to say, Rounders, American History X, Fight Club, and Red Dragon

I wasn't that far off, I guessed it would have been 15. It didn't make mine, I've watched it a handful of times and like it but it's not a go to for me.
I notice a few people saying this or that movie is not even close to a top 100, 50, 20 movie. I attacked this list leaning heavily on favorites which I assume many others did. It would be a very boring read if it was Citizen Kane, Godfather, Casablanca ad nauseam. So seeing how our top 10's and discussion go there has been very few outrageous rankings for me anyway.

It’s surely the role that launched him to superstardom. Those other roles were great and he already had a really good career to this point but Fight Club once it’s started reaching the cult circles made him A-List. None of those movies you listed was he the lead nor was he selling. Pitt sold Fight Club. Pitt personified Fight Club and it’s going to go down as his most popular movie ever. *He might have been the lead in LOTF I don’t remember , which only speaks to the point.
