11. Empire Strikes Back- Pleasantly surprised by Empire finishing in the Top 10. I thought there were enough Star Wars haters on PW to keep it out of the Top 25. I consider this a win for the PW Star Wars gang.
Empire saw the debuts of Yoda and Lando Calrissian. It took us to new worlds in Hoth, Cloud City, and Dagobah. And most importantly it had Darth Vader's big reveal. A true classic.

There are enough Star Wars haters on PW that I knew it wouldn't finish #1, so I'm happy ESB placed within the top 10. It is in the very short running for the greatest sequel ever made. Everything that works in A New Hope is taken to the next level. Except this time our heroes are taking it on the chin throughout the movie. Which sets up things gorgeously for the payoff of ROTJ.

If there was a film to recommend to anyone at random, someone you know nothing about, this feels like it could be the one. My brother unashamedly hates films and never watches them. He likes The Shawshank Redemption a lot. Furthermore, after many years of badgering and banter, I managed to get him to sit down and watch 12 Angry Men. He really enjoyed that film too. He still never watches movies :suspic:

Man, I was close again as I guessed ESB would have placed at 8. It is obviously the strongest Star Wars film but still not something I go gaga over. I'm not a hater, I'm more indifferent to the franchise.

I’ll be back after I scrub the toilets with my long post and tirade. Bring me a sandwich back too please. I'd be happy to bring you a sandwich from the toilet.
I had a huge post typed out and something went wrong with my computer so you are all spared.
Empire Strikes Back is my #1 movie of all time and has been since the moment I saw it. There's very little 'down' time and so much action it's hard to keep up at times. Great music, great characters, great storyline all set in SPACE!!! It had everything a sequel should have, some plot twists, new characters, a big reveal and sets up RotJ perfectly. Lucas continues to stun and fascinate and show he's ahead of the curve in terms of movie making technology and shows us a glimpse into our AI based future.
I actually thought it would be Top 5 so I'm anxious to see what you lot think is better than some of the heavy hitters that have already been mentioned.

My brother unashamedly hates films and never watches them. I suppose everyone has their "thing" I guess. I would also like some elaboration on this. I get not liking certain genres. But to be against the very concept of films is such a fascinatingly odd take and now I am intrigued by this mysterious brother of yours.

He doesn't have much to say on the topic. He just says that he falls asleep whenever he watches films. Well, except when he doesn't.
My theory is that he spends so much time watching sports (he watches every sport under the sun) that he doesn't wish to dedicate time to films and TV shows. Good for him, I guess.

I had a huge post typed out and something went wrong with my computer so you are all spared. Fine. I'll take the bait.
In May of 1980 IM was not yet a girl of 4. My parents decided I was well behaved enough to take me to my first movie ever. It was The Empire Strikes Back.
I remember not liking when the lights went out, but almost immediately I am comforted by this amazing music. Words I couldn't read scrolled up the screen (my mom was reading them to me but I wasn’t listening) and then suddenly the music got lighter. We see something launched from a triangular space ship and land on a planet full of snow. What is it? Suddenly it sprouts legs and moves. Beeping and buzzing along. What is it doing? I was fascinated. You have to imagine at this point of my life we didn’t have a lot of money. We had a black and white TV with 4 channels, no remote, no VCR. Microwaves & cell phones aren’t a thing yet. I don't know about THX, 2001, the fact that computers exist or the fact that someone has even landed on the moon. The only robots I’ve ever seen at this point were likely from reruns of Battlestar Galactica or The Jetsons. I hadn’t even seen the first Star Wars at this point. The kind of technology just displayed in these first moments to me is mind blowing.
Over the next two hours I am introduced to characters and creatures that would change my life, defy my imagination. From Wampa Ice Creatures, Taun-Tauns to Stormtroopers and a baddie with a deviated septum who has his own entrance music. Star Wars would become as deeply engrained in me as my DNA. And why not? It is still used as the touchstone for most sequels; regarded by many as the greatest sequel of all time (usually vying for top position with Godfather II). It introduced me to a very different kind of Princess and teaches loyalty, compassion and friendship…ALL IN SPACE!!!!
It has very little downtime. The action is immediate and constant. It contains many of the fundamental conflicts of literature: person vs person, person vs themselves, person vs fate, person vs society, even to some extent person vs the unknown and technology. It’s no wonder it’s a never ending roller coaster ride of emotions and fun. There’s comedy, romance, plot twist and a BIG reveal and boasts some of the most quoted (and misquoted) lines in movie history. Everything setting up for the payback 4 years later in Return of the Jedi.
So many of you praise the MCU movies and call Star Wars overrated, and yet the MCU movies follow the very foundations laid out by the original SW trilogy and continued in the prequels and so on. The technology introduced in these films between 1976-1983 (and again in the early 2000's) would bring movies like Jurassic Park and The Avengers to life. And while the technology may seem dated now the original trilogy itself is still classic and timeless. The past doesn’t just meet the present, it merges into the future all set to one of the greatest movie soundtracks ever to exist.
When I watch a Star Wars movie or TV Show (The Mandalorian) I feel like a kid again. Last September, I was at Galaxy’s End in DisneyWorld which had just opened a month prior. I hate crowds and I hate the heat. It was 42C/107F and humid and there were people…everywhere. My clothes were sticking to me and my sunscreen was running down my very white skin and yet I was as happy as clam. Gleeful in fact. I didn’t hate people and I didn’t hate the heat. Nothing (outside of my daughter, nieces and nephews) compares to the absolute joy escaping to the world of Star Wars provides me; the hum of the lightsaber, the sound of a laser blaster, the Tie Fighters screeching through space, The Imperial March all give me goosebumps 40 years later. That is what Star Wars gives to me and why Empire Strikes Back remains my #1 favorite film of all time because when I watch it I am transported to a world of imagination and childlike wonder and I am incandescently happy.

It’s been awhile because I suck and keep forgetting to log on. But YAY to Fight Club was number 9 on my list - absolutely love the movie, wasnt a super fan of the book though tbh. And Aladdin my number 1 Disney movie, and number 2 on my list. I have been obsessed with Aladdin since I was a kid, he was my first crush and I was pleasantly surprised with the live action movie.
I wish Aladdin merchandise wasn’t so hard to come by in comparison to the other Disney films.
A lot of the other films listed I have either really enjoyed, absolutely love, or haven’t seen - either way they didn’t make my list. I’m just super stoked Aladdin made it!

Great stuff iron maiden, I mean Star Wars still sucks but I can appreciate anyone with that kind of passion for it. Also get that feeling from a ton of things and there is nothing better. I'm sure people get the same sentiment with JP , I don't but that doesn't mean it isn't a spectacular movie. I don't even really care about Dinosaurs (sorry Emperor) and this movie still hooks me with it's magic and imagination and ultimately suspense. I think I'd put this right after Jaws as far as biggest Spielberg's achievements.

JP to me is one of the best movies ever. Still good to this day. Endlessly quotable. Hell I even liked the humans. Not enough to want the figures but still.
Think it was my #3 so was hoping for more. But top 10 baybay.

That is usually me jTjohncenaGOAT . I am so unbearably unhappy in crowds so this was a delightful new sensation for me. I know it's much, much more than that for you though. I hope in time you'll be able to find a way past the trauma so you can enjoy something like this.
Jurassic Park is an amazing film. It certainly deserves to be on a Top 100 list for it's innovations to film and the franchise it spawned. However, I certainly wouldn't put it above Empire, Godfather or Shawshank. Of course it wasn't on my list. While I can appreciate it for what it is, it isn't a movie I own or re-watch. Dead dinosaurs make my car run and my house warm in the winter. Past that I have very little interest in them although a visit to Drumheller, Alberta to the Internationally renown Royal Tyrell Museum is well worth the trip (after COVID of course).

I don't know if I would rank JP this high, but it certainly deserves to be highly regarded. I was a huge dinosaur mark as a child, and JP made me inner 8 year old squeal with joy. The special effects on the dinos were absolutely groundbreaking at the time, and they still hold up to this day.
Alas , I gave two shits about the humans in the film. They were fodder for the dinos as far as I was concerned.

Jurassic Park was one of the marquee theater happenings of my generation. I've seen it twice in theaters on it's original theater run and it's 20th anniversary re-release and yes everything more than holds up. One of the great achievements of the last 30 years when incorporating practical and CG effects to it's full potential. Plus the human characters added alot of depth the story, sorry LT.
I can't believe how highly regarded The Princess Bride is in the PW community. Andre The Giant getting more love in a movie thread than any wrestling countdown I've seen, smh.

I'm not a huge Star Wars guy. I think the first one is good fun, and obviously had a huge impact on film, but quality wise it doesn't really go beyond good fun. I think ROTJ isn't much better than the abysmal prequels and the ewoks are just as annoying as Jar Jar Binks. I think The Force Awakens is as good of a nostalgia film you'll see, The Last Jedi is the closest they've gotten to great but with some key flaws, and the Rise of Skywalker was garbage. The Empire Strikes Back, however, is the exception - it's genuinely great and lives up to the hype. It's more imaginative, more emotional, more weighty, and just more fun. Glad it's the highest of the Star Wars by some distance. It is just a really good example of the great escapism that cinema offers. Turn it on, switch your brain off, and delight in the thrills it offers.

The Empire Strikes Back (143) and Jurassic Park (161) are not only two great films, but massive parts of a lot of our childhoods. No surprise to see either so high. With JP, I am with Shootist in thinking the human characters really help the film. I don't think anyone would argue that any of them should be on some greatest characters list, but they are memorable and Alan Grant has a nice arc. The SHOOOOOOT HEEEER guy. Nedry's DODGSON and uh-uh-uh. Samuel L's GODDAMMIT. Goldblum playing Goldblum. John Hammond being wonderfully deluded - you know he spared no expense. The dinosaurs are the stars of the show, but you can't overplay them, and if the human characters are completely dull and uninteresting, then the film as a whole really suffers. There were always going to be sequels, because $$$, but I don't need any more than the first. I don't need to know that Grant and Sattler separated and never ended up having kids, just throwing away his arc.

Princess Bride was #120 bro , it’s about time you stop being mad about it. INCONCIEV.... (goes and checks) oh... Highly underrated on this forum, I guess it has 2 or 3 huge fans and that's it. I think I might recall you saying we are done with LOTR films as well so that axes another one of my guesses.

I was gonna give you a heads up and let you change it and then got distracted by something shiny.

Didn't even think about Jurassic Park when I played UT's guessing game. Must have just assumed it was somewhere down in the 100s or off the list entirely. Had no idea it was so popular on PW and never, ever would have bet on it finishing in the top 10.
Anyway, JP is another one I saw around the time it came out that I never revisited. It was alright...I guess. Who knows? It was 27 years ago. I was already over dinosaurs by then.
All I really have to add is my wrestling and Ghostbusters fan cousin was a Jurassic Park mark who had an awesome shirt of a T-Rex playing lacrosse with the words "Jurass Is Grass." Pretty sure the T-Rex was also wearing sunglasses. GOAT shirt contender. ============= Guessing Game 2.0

I wish they did a prequel or some sort of spin off with Muldoon. He seems like a character right out of a story like The Most Dangerous Game or something. A film about dinosaur hunters = $$$$. INCONCIEV.... (goes and checks) oh... Yeah all three LOTR showed up. I was gonna give you a heads up and let you change it and then got distracted by something shiny. Now that I recall further, I actually did a search and nothing came up for Fellowship Of The Ring. It didn't even crack the top 200? Didn't even think about Jurassic Park when I played UT's guessing game. Must have just assumed it was somewhere down in the 100s or off the list entirely. You're missing my number 1 and also my guess for number 1. If this film misses the list this is top 10 blasphemy.

You're missing my number 1 and also my guess for number 1. If this film misses the list this is top 10 blasphemy. Hopefully you are referring to The Usual Suspects, which I had somewhere around #15 on my list, and not PW's favorite fictional movie, the so-called "Leon: The Professional." @ness you're good at spotting a fraud. Go to work on debunking this fictitious Leon nonsense.
