Isn't The Departed the GOAT? It’s the GOAT gangster movie not featuring Italian Americans and are set around Jack Nicholson playing the mob boss that starts with the word THE. Get it straight.

Rewatched this a few years ago with my daughter. Was caught off guard by just how much I didn’t like it, and wooh boy did my daughter not like it (though she was in on the remake so you can’t judge on her tastes) Old Disney animation did not make my list. What the motto with you? Meh, I probably like it more than Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast, but I haven’t seen them since they were in theaters.

mikec with the strangest and most shocking take in the whole thread. I don’t think it’s that shocking for animation to not be everyone’s particular cup of tea. I only had one animated movie on my list (I think) and had I made a top 200 none of the Disney classics wouldve made it. Just not my thing. Honestly it’s mostly the cheesy music. I am sitting here trying to figure out why I prefer the Pixar films and removing long “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” montages is a boost.

Circle of Life, Be Prepared, Hakuna Matata and I Just Can't Wait to be King are all in the same damn movie. But you're hung up on the overrated Elton John thing where the cartoon lions totally fuck. I understand. I don't agree, but I understand.

On a positive note, the Pumba knowing what the stars really are and getting slammed down by Timon is my favorite joke in a Disney movie. It’s brilliant.

Back to the Future (110) narrowly missed my list.
The Lion King (300) is probably just on the great side of the great/very good line for me. I think I used Training Day (327) as a film that almost defines that line for me, so that checks out. It is hard to find much to criticise about it. The opening is absolutely elite, top tier, no doubt. Basically every scene works, it isn't like there is some chunk of the film you are begging for it to get passed. The songs, visuals, villain, henchmen, sidekicks, Simba's arc, the love stuff, it all works. I guess it just doesn't work for me quite on the level of others. I'm not in love with it like I am the top Pixar films. Once I get through the Disney films again, I'd be surprised if it wasn't top 5, possibly top 3. Maybe Matthew Broderick's voice just sounds too much like Matthew Broderick.

I didn't have that many animated movies on my list either, this is what featured on my list.
41. Toy Story 3 44. Mary and Max 73. Finding Nemo 93. Spiderman Into The Spiderverse
It's technically not animation, but Team America was #92.
I'm surprised I had Finding Nemo so high. It's definitely top tier Pixar, but I wouldn't say it's definitively my second favourite Pixar movie, let alone Disney-Pixar.
The Lion King is the peak of the Disney renaissance and it would take Disney years to make anything comparable. Fantastic art direction, memorable characters, catchy songs - it's everything Disney excels at. It's not my favourite Disney flick, but it's difficult to argue it's quality.

Toy Story and Lion King are both just landmark movies of my childhood that I really don't like to argue between, so them showing up this close makes me happy. They are both in my Top 10 and both movies I go back to all the time. I know me and Big Pete were talking about it when Toy Story 3 came up , I'll have to go back and find those posts and maybe expand later when I have more time.

Toy Story is #78 on my list, and honestly I think that's a bit high. Great movie, but not close to peak Disney and peak Pixar IMO. Guess it has that mid 90s nostalgia factor for most of us who were growing up then.
I predicted it to place #2.

I don’t understand how Toy Story isn’t top tier Pixar. It’s the best Pixar movie. It’s my #1 Pixar and while nostalgia might play a small part , the movie also stands on its own merits.

Peak Pixar is Inside Out and Coco for me. To be fair, the first Toy Story needs a rewatch. Maybe I'm diminishing it because I haven't seen it in so long.
