I had 3 animated films on my list of 65; Beauty & the Beast, Monsters Inc and Sleeping Beauty (suck it). Toy Story would have been in my Top 100 lower down. It's certainly spawned a great franchise. All 4 have been great. Fun for the whole family.

No way does Coco belong in that conversation , that movie wastes too much time in certain areas.
Even if you take away the innovation , which Toy Story deserves all the credit in the world for and you take away the nostalgia ... Toy Story at its core is such a perfectly made movie. It's under 90 minutes and in that time they manage to cram more story , more heart and more comedy than movies twice it's time.
Woody's plight is a relatable one and everyone has been probably felt that kind of jealousy at one point or another in their life and his plight to accept Buzz is great. Buzz's naivety brings the comedy but also feeds into the and envy of Woody. This toy , who doesn't even know what it means to be a toy and be there for a child is now getting all the attention of Andy. He doesn't even realize how good he's got it. Their arc is perfectly told and perfectly cemented by the end.
Then you add is the sadistic toy torturing Sid as a big part of the second act of the movie and key to Woody and Buzz's relationship. They have to work together to survive and earn a respect towards each other. Sandwiched in there is Buzz's realization that he's not a Space Ranger but in fact "just a toy" and it's a blow to him that you can actually feel. Buzz even accepts the fact he's a toy and eventually realizes that it is so much more important to mean something to someone , to a community of toys devoted to their child.
Then you have the side characters , prominently highlighted throughout with some great jokes and great writing. The birthday party scene is brilliantly constructed and a great way to introduce you to the stakes these toys face.
And brilliant , A+ , top notch , doesn't get any better voice acting from everyone from the leads to the scared dinosaur.
And again all this in less than 90 minutes. They told such a great tight story without filler , with iconic characters and incredible heart. It not only is the template for Pixar - it set an impossibly high bar that very few movies matched or came close to IMO.
Even the sequels are beloved , and yes its because they are also brilliantly made but because you invested so much in those characters in that initial movie that you want to spend time with them. You want to watch them grow and it doesn't matter if it was 5 years later or 20 years later - the thing that made them work was that initial story being so poignant and effective.

I would've guessed Toy Story placing at 12. It is a tad overrated on this list and I would have Lion King ahead of it for sure. I saw Toy Story in theater and enjoyed it enough but it's still the only Pixar movie I've seen.

I don’t understand how Toy Story isn’t top tier Pixar. It’s the best Pixar movie. It’s not even the best Toy Story movie. Toy Story wasn’t on my list. I like it, but Toy Story 3 is better and I agree with Emperor that both Coco and Inside Out were better from Pixar. Wall-E is trash though. But Toy Story’s better than Lion King, so it deserves this rank at least.

I didn't have that many animated movies on my list either, this is what featured on my list. 41. Toy Story 3 44. Mary and Max 73. Finding Nemo 93. Spiderman Into The Spiderverse Only three for me on submitted list. 36. WALL·E (Andrew Stanton, 2008) - @ness mikec couldn't be more wrong. 44. Grave of the Fireflies (Isao Takahata, 1988) 90. Toy Story 3 (Lee Unkrich, 2010) ----------------------- UT covered fantastically what makes Toy Story (158) so great. It is one of those films that I could accept someone calling pretty much perfect. Establishes a universe and multiple characters so completely, tells a great story and finishes magnificently, all inside 80 mins from logos to credits. I may even have it a bit low, but there are a lot of great fucking films. 158 is pretty high all things considered. Inside Out (221) and Coco (312) are great but that level below elite Pixar. Which is more about how good Pixar are than a slight on those films. WALL·E (36) Toy Story 3 (92*) / Up (136) / Toy Story (158) The Incredibles (191) / Inside Out (221) / Toy Story 2 (227) Coco (312) / Finding Nemo (318) / Ratatouille (326) / Monsters, Inc. (344) An incredible big 11 films. And it isn't like the rest of them are shite or anything. Almost all Pixar is good to very good. *films have been added since list submission, so that's why there is a difference

02. Vertigo 03. A Clockwork Orange 08. Throne Of Blood 11. Singin' In The Rain 16. North By Northwest 17. The Seventh Seal 25. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
28. Three Colors: Blue 30. Schindler's List 32. Shutter Island 34. Reservoir Dogs 35. 12 Angry Men
39. It's A Wonderful Life 52. Casablanca 54. Citizen Kane 74. Chinatown 79. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 99. The Apartment
Three more hits on my list in the #39-#5 range on the overall list. And I suspect that will seal my list off with no more placements.
That will give me an 18/200 ratio. Not bad. 9% of the films made my list! Almost a full ten percentage points! PW should be proud.

Wish I would have sent in a list for this. Probably would have been something like:
1. Jurassic Park 2. Fifth Element 3. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
With the rest of the list just being a toss-up of other childhood/teenage personal favorites and a few critically acclaimed classics thrown in here and there.
"Stranger Than Fiction" in there somewhere, too. That film doesn't get enough love.
P.S. - Original Toy Story is easily Top 20 material.

Pulp Fiction is AWESOME!
The first time I watched it, I was BLOWN AWAY by the way the story was told. It literally felt like one fun ass drug ride. Every single storyline in that movie is epic and when they all come together, it makes it even more awesome. So many amazing quotes in that movie and it's super deserving of being #4. Reservoir Dogs gets a lot of love, but it's nowhere near the awesomeness that is Pulp Fiction. I actually have a 3D framed picture of Samuel Jackson and John Travolta with their guns pointed forward in my old room at my parents. I love this fucking movie. I had it @ #9 on my list and it being this high is good to see.

This is my Top 26. I made sure to put the 26th in because I am very disappointed it's not going to make the list. I even added my #10 because I'm a realist and I'm aware that's not going to make the list at this point either which is a shame since the movie is fucking amazing. Same with my #15. I blurred out the name of my #2 and #21 since they're obviously making the list, but I added a line to it that'll make it nearly impossible for anyone to know which one.
My top 26 is ALL OVER THE FUCKING PLACE with genres of movies, but this is the shit I love. This is the mind of The Kid.
1- THE DEPARTED
2- HIDDEN IN THE SHINEBOX
3- GODFATHER 2
4- WIZARD OF OZ
5- TRAINING DAY
6- LION KING
7- TITANIC
8- GLADIATOR
9- PULP FICTION
10- ALPHA DOG
11- GODFATHER 1
12- ET
13- SAW
14- CITY OF GOD
15- LES MISERABLES
16- ALADDIN
17- WOLF OF WALL STREET
18- DJANGO UNCHAINED
19- INGLORIOUS BASTERDS
20- GREASE
21- HIDDEN IN THE SHADOWS
22- AVIATOR
23- REMEMBER THE TITANS
24- DUMB AND DUMBER
25- HANGOVER
26- SPACE JAM

I enjoyed Pulp Fiction the 2 times I've watched it. It certainly wouldn't be anywhere close to #4 on my list. Likely closer to the 150-200 range. I thought I was shocked before with the placement of some of these, but this takes the cake so far.

Pulp Fiction was my #35. I really enjoy the movie, though for me it keeps going down my list because of a problem it shares (to a lesser extent) with the Dark Knight which is that there’s one character/performance that is blowing everything else out of the water to the point that I want to see scenes with Jules and if a different scene is on I turn it off.
But man Samuel L Jackson is electric in this movie. Every vignette with him is quotable and intense and awesome.

E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial (1982) 100. Vertigo (1958) I'm not surprised at this ranking, Pulp Fiction is pretty universally praised (except for the contrarian UT and the indifferent James Rolfe) A power house script where each story is interesting unto itself and told in a most effective non-linear fashion. This blew me away when I first saw it 25 years ago, I had never seen a film like it before and it got me hooked on anything Tarantino. Also another great soundtrack, surf rock and 70's funk never sounded cooler back in the world of grunge and alternative.

Pulp Fiction is an amazing movie. It's a bit overrated because people absolutely idolize it, but it is genuinely of very high quality. It did not make my list but it certainly was close. For all the counter-hate it gets for being too pretentious, much of which I have read on PW, I am glad it still placed highly on PW’s list. I guess the perception that PW hated it wasn’t too accurate.
The Departed is one of my favorite movies. Martin Sheen, Leo, Damon, and Mark all put in just absolutely incredible performances. One of the greatest acting forces ever assembled in one film. It would have made my list if Nicholson didn't completely ruin it by going full ham.
The Big Lebowski was close to making my list too. I haven't seen it in a very long time so I don't recall it too well, but Jeff Bridges is awesome and kicks ass so that is all you need to know.
Shawshank Redemption is a 4th movie I would like to give a shout-out too that almost made my list. Darabont is incredible and is the main reason why the first season of Walking Dead was amazing as well.
Jurassic Park is almost as overrated as Star Wars, perhaps moreso because it is nowhere near as good as Star Wars. The special effects were revolutionary for their time and I don't count anything against that, but special effects alone do not make a movie good. Plus it released before my time so there were already tons of movies like it back when I was growing up. That doesn't take away from the accomplishment and respect for it being the first, but the movie has little else aside from that. I enjoy plenty of fun action romps but the dialogue in this was too cringey to get past. The stereotypical strong man that protects the woman who insists she isn't weak just because she is a woman and then immediately almost dies and needs to be saved. I typically hate people claiming a movie is sexist, but this was pretty blatant anti-feminist in a disturbing way. I guess it was for humor so I'm not saying any legitimate sexism was intended, but it just came off as dumb to me. It would probably be fine if that was mixed in with any quality, but Jurassic Park it like a parody of an action movie that followed all the tropes. There was just nothing special about this movie aside from "woah realistic looking dinos" which was almost completely lost on me anyway.
I absolutely love Back to the Future, and it was one of my favorites growing up. I loved the concept and themes and it is indeed a top tier movie as far as cool and influential goes, perhaps even the best of its ilk. It is also of very high quality technically, surprisingly so. I recall rewatching it in the past and expecting it to be good just from the nostalgia but was blown away by how good the actual movie was and it still had a big impact on me again. I don't mean to take anything away from it, but on technical aspects, while they are very high, I feel it couldn't quite hold up to the movies that did make my list so I could not find a place for it. I liked it a lot more than a bunch of movies that are of higher quality technically, of course, but not better than the movies on my list.
The Lion King is...a good film. I would watch it any day and be glad I did. Very entertaining. But I'm not sure what about it would make me consider it for a greatest movies list. Maybe someone posted a tribute to it earlier that I missed, but I am actually interested to know what people are seeing in it so highly so I will look for it. If it were top one hundred movie songs, I could see some of them placing...but that's about it. This power metal cover of Can You Feel The Love Tonight is one of my favorite songs:
Toy Story seems to have some weird cult following on PW so I am not surprised that it placed. I can see special things about it that take it beyond a Lion King for sure so I'd say it is more deserving in that regard. Plus it was completely ingrained in our culture moreso as well. I guess by those standards, its placement is justified, and I do enjoy the movie...but I guess it's just not my favorite cup of tea.
