Everything is easier in hindsight, right? UT and I are going to take it in turns redrafting the 2010 class now that we've seen how everyone turned out. The 2010 draft was a strong one, 17 first rounders went on to receive Pro Bowl selections, and four recently won a Super Bowl with this years Buccaneers.
We've got eyes on doing a bunch of these so if you'd like to participate let me know and we'll get you in the loop for the future. In the meantime sit back and let us know what you think - agree, disagree, vehemently oppose. Let's get things started.
1. St Louis Cardinals - Trent Williams (Sam Bradford) 2. Detroit Lions - Rob Gronkowski (Ndamukong Suh) 3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Antonio Brown (Gerald McCoy) 4. Washington Football Team - Earl Thomas (Trent Williams) 5. Kansas City Chiefs - Eric Berry (Eric Berry) 6. Seattle Seahawks - Devin McCourty (Russell Okung) 7. Cleveland Browns - Demaryius Thomas (Joe Haden) 8. Oakland Raiders - Geno Atkins (Rolando McClain) 9. Buffalo Bills - Ndamukong Suh (CJ Spiller) 10. Jacksonville Jaguars - Gerald McCoy (Tyson Alualu) 11. San Francisco 49ers - Joe Haden (Anthony Davis) 12. San Diego Chargers - Dez Bryant (Ryan Mathews) 13. Philadelphia Eagles - Jason Pierre-Paul (Brandon Graham) 14. Seattle Seahawks - Maurkice Pouncey (Earl Thomas) 15. New York Giants - Carlos Dunlap (Jason Pierre-Paul) 16. Tennessee Titans - Jimmy Graham (Derrick Morgan) 17. San Francisco 49ers - Russell Okung (Mike Iupati) 18. Pittsburgh Steelers - Mike Iupati (Maurkice Pouncey) 19. Atlanta Falcons - Everson Griffen (Sean Weatherspoon) 20. Houston Texans - Kam Chancellor (Kareem Jackson) 21. Cincinnati Bengals - Emmanuel Sanders (Jermaine Gresham) 22. Denver Broncos - NaVorro Bowman (Demaryius Thomas) 23. Green Bay Packers - Rodger Saffold (Bryan Bulaga) 24. Dallas Cowboys - Sean Lee (Dez Bryant) 25. Denver Broncos - Sam Bradford (Tim Tebow) 26. Arizona Cardinals - Linval Joseph (Dan Williams) 27. New England Patriots - Brandon Graham (Devin McCourty) 28. Miami Dolphins - TJ Ward (Jared Odrick) 29. New York Jets - Kareem Jackson (Kyle Wilson) 30. Detroit Lions - Jerry Hughes (Jahvid Best) 31. Indianpolis Colts - Bryan Bulaga (Jerry Hughes) 32. New Orleans Saints - Golden Tate (Patrick Robinson)
---
With the first pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the St Louis Cardinals select Trent Williams, LT, Oklahoma
Instead of drafting the man that he protected at OU, the Cardinals instead acquire Williams to be their blindside blocker for the next decade. Williams reeled off seven straight pro bowl appearances and would provide the protection that Sam Bradford failed to received and contributed to his premature departure from St Louis, and eventually the NFL. A cornerstone left tackle is one of the most valuable assets a team can have, and the Cardinals now have one throughout the 2010s.
The Detroit Lions are on the clock...

Oh I wasn’t expecting that pick at all , interesting but it also makes a ton of sense. Especially considering how bad their offensive line was at that point.
Makes me have to make a tough choice for the Lions.

With the 2nd overall pick in the 2010 NFL Redraft the Detroit Lions Select: Rob Gronkowski , TE , Arizona 5x Pro Bowler 4x 1st Team All Pro 4x Super Bowl Champion Future Hall of Fame Inductee It was really hard for me to pass on Earl Thomas , especially for a team in the Lions of 2010 that could use the defensive help and a true defensive difference maker. I couldn't pass up on the chance to pair Gronk with Calvin Johnson though for a young Matthew Stafford and create what would have to be one of the most unstoppable pass catching duo's we'd ever see , especially in the red zone. Two just absolutely physically dominant specimens to set up their offense for at least the next 6 or 7 years. The downside would be the durability of Gronk for stretches but I think he would more than pay off for the Lions in his time there , just in the development of Stafford alone. And they wouldn't even have to wait for him to contribute as he was double digit TD scorer in his 1st year in the league. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are on the clock.

And this class as a whole for the Jets sucked. 4 picks in this class and the 1st rounder was shitty Kyle Wilson. Vladimir Ducasse was the 2nd rounder and routinely failed whenever he got to start in the pros. Joe McKnight was a good special teamer for the Jets & Chiefs and he was killed by some asshole in a road rage incident a couple of years ago. And we took a FB in round 5 in John "The Terminator" Connor who just blocked and did absolutely nothing else.
Fucking awful draft class. To me this was the beginning of the end as the Jets sold draft picks to try and make their championship runs go further. Kyle Wilson has to be one of the worst cornerbacks I have ever seen play, awful technique, has zero makeup speed and when he did make a good play would do the "FEED ME MORE" gesture telling QBs to try that again........which they did and he was routinely burned consistently.

With the third pick in the 2010 NFL Redraft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Antonio Brown, WR, Central Michigan.
Brown, as we now know, is one of the greatest late round draft picks of all time. Numerous off the field incidents have derailed his career to a certain extent in recent seasons but prior to that he was unquestionably the best receiver of the decade with six straight season of over 100 receptions. The Bucs had a surprisingly good season in 2010 but they could have used some more receiver help, they actually carried four rookies on the roster but they were all out of the league within a few years. Of course AB ended up in Tampa this season and won a ring - let's make it all simpler.

With the 4th pick in the 2010 Redraft , the Washington Redskins select: Earl Thomas , Safety , Texas 7x Pro Bowl Selection 3x First Team All Pro Potential Hall of Famer The Redskins lost out on their original first pick when Williams went first overall and they could easily go Okung here as well to shore up that spot , but I went with whom I think is the BPA with Thomas who was no doubt the premiere safety of his generation. Washington was actually building a nice little defense around this time and though they whiffed on Laron Landy in Free Agency I could imagine a scenario where Thomas helps even his career turn out by playing the center field role he was so great at. The Kansas City Chiefs are on the clock

Also considered Brown over Gronk but I really just don't like the dude , which probably isn't the best way to do a redraft. Also though I think Gronk would have made a better and more interesting pair with Johnson with both of their physical dominance and the tight end being a big part of Detroits offense. I mean Brandon "Who" Pettigrew caught over 70 passes that year with Detroit ... imagine what Gronk could have done.
Things are getting a little more interesting going forward.
The Chiefs were decent in 2010 , above average offense and defense. Could probably use another pass catcher or help on defense. Could easily stick with the same pick and it would make a ton of sense as well.

2010 Chiefs were propped up by an easy schedule and folded like a card table against good teams. Their GM was a control freak and their head coach was feuding with all the players especially the QB and would soon be leaking details of Pioli’s craziness to the KC Star within a season or two.

With the fifth pick in the 2010 NFL Redraft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Eric Berry, Safety, Tennessee Sticking with the actual pick seems a little bit boring but I think this one is very justified. Berry turned out to be the face of the Chiefs during the 2010s, and along with the previous pick Thomas formed the safety pairing of the all decade team. You can't ignore what an instant impact he made in Kansas City, playing every single snap and finishing second on the team in tackles during his rookie season. He went on to record three all pro selections including two after recovering from Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2014. The Seattle Seahawks are on the clock... Also considered Brown over Gronk but I really just don't like the dude , which probably isn't the best way to do a redraft. Also though I think Gronk would have made a better and more interesting pair with Johnson with both of their physical dominance and the tight end being a big part of Detroits offense. The Chiefs were decent in 2010 , above average offense and defense. Could probably use another pass catcher or help on defense. Could easily stick with the same pick and it would make a ton of sense as well. I think I would have made the same choice with Gronk over AB to Detroit. The Lions already had a pretty decent #2 receiver in Nate Burleson, and you mention Pettigrew who I remember as more of that "big wide receiver" type player rather than an all rounder like Gronk. Detroit went years there with a group of ham and eggers at running back so he would have helped with that aspect as well. AB's personality does have to be factored in - as a lot of people have mentioned, in hindsight it's pretty amazing that the Steelers managed to keep Brown on the (relative) straight and narrow for as long as they did. Who knows what happens to his career/life if he were drafted to a less functional team.

The Seattle Seahawks select:
Devin McCourty , S , Rutgers
The Seahawks were in a bad way on both sides or the in 2010 ranking in the bottom 10 on each side. They lose out on Earl Thomas who was a key cog in their dynasty secondary going forward but replace him with McCourty who’s made All-Pro in almost every year in the league and as consistent as they come as a leader on the Patriots. They will have to hope one of the offensive linemen fall to them at 14.
The Cleveland Browns are OTC!

Crazy that three safeties go in the Top 6 in the redraft but IMO it makes the most sense and they were all huge factors in their teams success for a decade. Eric Berry was a great choice but you could easily make an argument for McCourty there too.

With the sixth pick in the 2010 NFL Redraft the Cleveland Browns select Demariyus Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
Cleveland might well have taken a safety themselves had they not been beaten to the punch by the teams before them, but instead they boost their anaemic receiving corps with the big bodied Thomas. Mohammed Massaquoi led their wideouts the following season with just 483 yards so DT would have quickly become their #1 weapon. Obviously the QB situation was a disaster here so his immediate production wouldn't have been tremendous, but he was a versatile receiver who would have made life easier for Colt McCoy over the next couple of seasons.

With the 8th pick in the 2010 Redraft , the Oakland Raiders select: Geno Atkins , DT , Georgia 10x Pro Bowl Selection 2x All Pro Selection 2010 All Decade HOF Team Atkins was a steal in the 3rd round of the actual 2010 Draft and he's even a steal here with the 8th overall pick as there is a clear argument to be made for him being a Top 5 player in the draft. The Raiders were a weirdly successful team on offense in 2010 despite starting Jason Campbell at quarterback and having next to no one at receiver and I would have liked to take one for them here but Thomas goes the pick before. They had a pair of decent tackles on defense at the time but Atkins would have came in and solidified that unit as a rookie and gave them a defensive centerpiece to build around for the next decade to come. The Buffalo Bills are OTC

I'm not sure Thomas is a better player than Atkins but I also didn't look at the Browns roster at the time , but I was pretty happy that Atkins made it another pick. Even though both players I think would have ended up going in these spots in either order.

The Suh hate is real here. I would take him a smudge over Geno Atkins just because he's been able to make an impact in different defenses rather than 1 stay, has stepped up in the playoffs when called upon, including this recent run and he's knocked the cheap shot stuff off in the past couple of years. He's been a valuable part wherever he is, he did as good of a job as he can in Detroit, he was solid in Miami even if overpaid and was a monster with Aaron Donald with the Rams and was a vital force for the Bucs success this year. I like Geno Atkins so I am cool with that going either way so it isn't that bad of an omission.
No shot Dey Thomas goes over Suh, I saw Dey Thomas recently with the Jets, he is done. He had a couple of strong years in Denver, but with Houston, NE or NYJ? The injury did him in IMO. Cleveland would run the to the podium for Suh.
Who did the Chiefs have at DT better than Suh? I love Barry but the lack of longevity for him would not have him ranked over Suh. People forget how great he was early on in Detroit because of all the shenanigans he did.

It's fair to bring up Suh over Atkins , and it would probably make more sense considering it's the Raiders. I just like Atkins and think he was a little more consistent year in and year out than Suh. The idea that him doing it on more defenses than one is dumb though - he was allowed to leave multiple places because his play fluctuated a ton and you weren't always getting the dominant force he could be. He wasn't as good in every system either. When on he was maybe a better all around player but he also doesn't have the motor and leadership ability Atkins has.
The Thomas argument is plain stupid , no offense but there really is no other word for it than that. Basing his overall career and contributions to his last few years with the Jets and Patriots is ridiculous.
Five straight 1000 yard season , three straight double digit touchdown years and arguably his peak as a Top 5 receiver in the NFL stands for itself. If the Browns needed a receiver as evident by Massaquoi's leading their team at sub 500 yards than it's a pick that really makes sense.

I am cool with Geno Atkins over Suh, it's neck and neck and Atkins as a 3rd round pick vs Suh as a 2nd overall pick makes the former shatter expectations which is favored in a fan's eyes. But if we are knocking players on lack of playoff success, than Bengals or not, Atkins not having a single win on his resume sticks out as the reason to favor Suh over Atkins. Just because they aren't QBs does not mean they are excluded from wins or not. Suh got a worse Lions side to the playoffs as the leader of the defense just as Atkins did. Yeah Suh ring chased the past 3-4 seasons no doubt on short term deals but he's still getting it done inside, even if on limited snaps.
And yes I do factor in Dey Thomas time in those stints when in comparison to the full resume of Suh and Suh is still playing well to this day vs what Thomas is doing now. Longevity 1000% matters in these re-dos for me.
And besides I will always take a DT/NT over WR if the talent is neck and neck. The Browns needed plenty of things. Unless it's for a QB, you don't go for need that high in the draft. BPA. They had Mangini as HC who runs a 3-4 so Suh would be the DE before Shurmur who got hired a year after the 2010 NFL Draft would go back to 4-3 under Jauron.
Plenty of solid WRs this draft with Dez Bryant, Emmanuel Sanders & Golden Tate all out of this draft. DTs not so much after Suh, G McCoy and Atkins. I would take Suh over both but we can agree to disagree!

I didn’t measure playoff success really from DT standpoint as much as Suhs play to play and year to year consistency. You knew every snap what you were getting from Atkins while Suh you didn’t. Though I concede that Suh is far more of a Raiders player.
The Browns had a solid defense in 2010 as well whilst having the second worst offense in the league ... making a move for a game breaking WR makes sense as well. That receiving corps was abysmal. Their line was at least serviceable.

Fun fact too, this was the final draft that had the mega contracts for people out of college before the new CBA made for slotted rookie deals to make far less guarantees in their 1st contract. AKA The Sam Bradford rule
On July 30, 2010, Bradford signed a six-year, $78 million deal, which had $50 million of guarantees and a maximum value of $86 million which made it the largest contract ever for an NFL rookie.
Heck if he can play a lot in a year or if he was truly great but Bradford always found a way to cash in at the right time. There were busts too like J Russell who hurt the process for these guys getting out of college but man Sam Bradford is damn lucky to get that type of money off the get go. Type of deal that if a rookie bombs, can hurt the cap room of a team. So glad they fixed this.

If we knew in advance that Eric Berry’s career would play out the same way, the 5th pick for him was a mistake. Terrific guy, but he only played what 7 seasons and at times was a liability in coverage on bad defenses while being one of the highest paid safeties in the league because of his draft position.

Nose tackle was probably the one position Cleveland wouldn't have been thinking about at this stage, they had so many holes on both sides of the ball but they actually had two starting level NTs on the roster at that time. Maybe I could have done Atkins to KC and Berry to Cleveland.
With the ninth pick in the 2010 NFL Draft the Buffalo Bills select Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
The Bills moved to a 3-4 defence this offseason with Chan Gailey so they would have been delighted to have Suh fall to them. They spent their second and third round picks this (real) draft on defensive tackles but both struggled with injuries and never cracked the starting lineup. Getting Suh this year would have freed up their #3 pick next season to get AJ Green or Julio Jones instead of Marcel Dareus. Suh has obviously had a hugely successful career and I think his aggressive/dirty style of play would have been a good fit with the Bills Mafia.

With the 10th pick in the 2010 NFL redraft , the Jacksonville Jaguars select:
Gerald McCoy , DT , Oklahoma
The Jaguars took Alualu in this spot in the actual draft so it's not a stretch to say they would stick with the same position but a much better player. McCoy is in the bottom end of a little run on tackles but that doesn't take anything away from a great career he had as a centerpiece of the Bucs defense and a dude just as heralded for his time off the field.
Crazy to see two positions with similar runs and really only two skill position players taken.

With the eleventh pick in the 2010 NFL Redraft, the San Francisco 49ers select Joe Haden, CB, Florida
The 49ers had begun to put together their defence that they would soon ride to three straight NFC Championship games, but while they had studs like Justin Smith and Patrick Willis, the secondary was still a weakness at this point. Haden would have fit in perfectly behind that dominant front seven rather than spending the early part of his career wasted as a bright spark on some terrible Browns defences/teams. He probably hasn't received the respect he deserves for his longevity, and he's arguably better than ever today which is a rarity in an aging DB, as was seen in the Steelers late season fade following his injury.
