It's Lawlermania season. You guys will have to bear with me for a while. Found the tape that introduced me to the magic of Lawler in Memphis. Think a young Kilgore came across it as well. This one has an extended Lawler entrance with extra build and spotlights + Nick Bock in action and The Sheik in a LOSER LEAVES TOWN match. What more could any wrestling fan possibly want? You know you want to watch...

Is there a Conway Pop equivalent to the utter disappointment I assume for when Jose Lothario came out to HBK's music @ 12? Like can we quantify that sort of "huh" reaction?
"I ain't no sexy boy" indeed.

One more. Your favorite wrestler probably had a cool entrance at some point during their career, but did they ever get a 90 second preamble before emerging from the depths in full king regalia while Ric Flair's theme played and then walked that aisle to the Star Wars theme? Didn't think so. This goes beyond wrestling. This is art...
*The King's entrance begins around 1:00. Dat pop comes around 2:28.

Watched an episode of WWE treasures and they actually found the contest winner for the PWI Dusty Rhodes boots contest. Some guy in LA won them, the Fed EX guy just delivered them right to his door. He had them for over 35 years and sells them to WWE for a paltry $6000 . They couldn't name a price if I won a contest like that.

Good call on the ECW Draft Neo Zeed . Hadn't thought about that in years. Pretty sure I made the finals before doing the j-o-b in a blowout to Kilgore . That was back when I was the early 90s Buffalo Bills of PW Drafts forever going down in the finals. Also pretty sure I remember my roster. Let's find out... Furnas & LaFon, JT Smith & Tom Brandi as my FBI, Sabu, Benoit, Flair, Chetti, Super Crazy, Hakushi, "Mallrat" Erik Watts, and maybe Stevie. Then I got Taz in a steal. Stevie is the one I'm least confident in. Might have got him in a steal as well. Also feel like a picked up a Pitbull or 2 along the way. First card iirc... Furnas & LaFon vs. FBI- Tag Title Match "Mallrat" Erik Watts vs. Chetti- Former Rookie of the Year vs. Current Rookie of the Year Crazy vs. Hakushi- Workrate Match Flair vs. Stevie (or Pitbull #2?)- ECW Championship Match Sabu vs. Benoit- Grudge Match built around Sabu getting revenge on Benoit for breaking his neck Also ran Sabu/Crazy/Hakushi, Flair vs. Chetti, Taz vs. Benoit, Furnas vs. LaFon, and I think Sabu vs. Taz at some point. Jackpot! I found the full ECW Draft. Will post the whole thing in a few days. Maybe some of you will be able to piece together your rosters. Here were my picks... Round 1: Sabu 2. Chris Benoit 3. Ric Flair 4. Hakushi 5. Super Crazy 6. Doug Furnas 7. Chris Chetti 8. JT Smith 9. Hack Myers 10. Phil LaFon 11. Tom Brandi 12. Erik Watts Meaning I remembered 11 of my 12 picks from a draft nine years ago. You have to admit I'm good. Only one I whiffed on was Hack Myers. Back in February I wrote that elusive 12th pick was "maybe Stevie...Stevie is the one I'm least confident in. Might have got him in a steal"

I have a great memory when it comes to the average person, but it's really nothing compared to the Baker man. Wrestlers who were definitely on my final ECW roster: Steve Austin Ron Simmons 2 Cold Scorpio New Jack Mustafa Raven Terry Funk Rocco Rock Johnny Grunge Mikey Whipwreck RVD Mike Awesome 911 No idea about order, except Austin was my #1 pick. Pretty sure I got Terry Funk, RVD and Mike Awesome in steals, probably Raven too just doing the math, so I am forgetting a few draftees. Did we have a gentleman's agreement about tag teams (not poaching the partner of a wrestler drafted by someone else)? How did that work that I ended up with both PE and The Gangstas?

Came across two old school 80s smarks discussing WWF hires that most shocked them during that glorious decade (both surprisingly had T. Funk at #1) and I got to thinking about the most shocking WWF hires during my lifetime as an in the know fan. Going to break it down into two categories- Political & WTF...
Political is the more interesting one. These are the real "hell freezes over" folks I thought would never, ever be back. Names like...
Eric Bischoff Hulk Hogan The Outsiders Sable Bret Hart Jeff Jarrett CM Punk Brock Lesnar
*That's how I'd order them, but any order works. They're all worthy #1 choices.
And the "WTF" category is basically weird fitting hires, usually from ECW, the indies, or Japan. Guys like Spike Dudley, Balls/Sandman/Sabu, Steen & Generico, KENTA, Low Ki, etc.

Bischoff is my #1. With Bischoff, Vince had no connection at all, only animosity. And even Bischoff's success, admirable as it was, even begrudgingly to Vince, could be, and often was, looked at circumstantial, so it wasn't like Vince was like, "I gotta have that genius working for me," as literally no one viewed Bischoff that way. Probably was strictly a power move, just so Vince could be like, "You work for ME now."
All but two of the others didn't surprise me, just because they made money for Vince and Vince is a greedy psycho, so yeah man, make a little more money, Vince.
Sable and Bret are my exceptions.
Sable with the lawsuit just seemed untouchable. And even her drawing prowess, which is often underrated, was past its due date, so it wasn't like, just grit your teeth and deal with her to make loads of money. That time had passed. Weird re-hire.
Bret was the only wrestler that ever seemed out of Vince's control. Like whether Vince wanted Bret back, or didn't, totally meaningless, because Bret himself, simply would never go back. Everybody else had a price, or a desire to be back in the big time, so fences could be mended, money exchanged, and this is every Hulk Hogan return. Bret was different. Really thought he'd never go back. Kinda wish he didn't.
The best ECW hire WTF is The Blue Meanie. As The Blue Meanie.

Ultimate Warrior and Bruno being brought back under legends deals were two other returns I thought I'd never see, Superstar Graham as well. I also saw something about the relationship between Bill Eadie and WWE thawing so perhaps a Demolition HoF induction is looming. Lex Luger is another one due to his abrupt departure. For an 80's hire Harley Race has to be up there, Dusty too. But as Kilgore mentioned all of these names have dollar signs attached to them and that's what it comes down to.

Jonathan Torrens of Jonovision and Trailer Park Boys fame gets to the bottom of the wrestling business with help from Bret Hart and Jeff Jarrett. From Nov. 1994 in Halifax.
I agree with the guy at 4:42.

Was thinking about those "Andre the Giant Has A Posse" stickers the local youths would put on signs in my cousin's neighborhood down in the city. 90s me popped hard for this rare pre-Attitude Era wrestling reference in the wild. You don't have to believe this next bit. I probably wouldn't believe it myself if some weirdo on the internet told me. But a "Louie Has A Posse" sticker or two in the style of the Andre ones appeared on a sign or two in my cousin's neighborhood after Spicolli's death. Can't remember whether the "Spicolli" name appeared or not. But I swear this happened! Did a Cheers re-watch about 10 years ago ( tapped out a couple seasons into the Rebecca years, Diane Chambers years man til the day I die). Did you make it to the Robin Colcord arc? Because that's where I am now and I'm finally starting to get bored with Cheers.

Because that's where I am now and I'm finally starting to get bored with Cheers. Didn't make it that far. Which is probably good because I have positive memories of that character! Glad a re-watch didn't possibly spoil it. Part of the greatness of Cheers, I think, is how un-sitcom it feels. Of the main characters only Coach/Woody are pure sitcom characters (albeit good ones). Everyone else feels real to some degree. They're written and performed so well. None of them doing sitcom delivery jokes, just naturally funny in like a David Mamet play sort of way. Or a Mike Leigh BBC thing. It reminds me more of theater than sitcom. Then there's Rebecca. Every line reading is pure sitcom delivery. I hate it. I hate her. Net negative presence on the entire show. Diane Chambers Forever.

Big news. Found the original PW Favorite Wrestler Top 100 results from January 2015. Don't feel like posting it right now. But one day... I'm addicted to this ranking engine site, so I redid my list as well from a few years back. www.pubmeeple.com/ranking-engineIf your not familiar, you just submit a master list then it divides it up into individual head to head match-ups and you pick your favorite for each. Based on your choices it ranks your list in the end. It takes several cycles, so towards the end it makes you choose between your top favorites.

Did they ever do a ladder match with a giant who ripped all the normal-size (gimmicked obviously) ladders in half? Then produced his own small ladder that meant only he could reach the belt using it? His opponent would win be knocking the giant loopy at the top of the small ladder and then climb up and on to the giant to win.
That feels like it works in multiple ways. Gets over the (presumably heel) giant's strength and intelligence, while also getting over the face's own intelligence and perseverance.

Another wrestling reference on Cheers. This time Woody confused John McLaughlin of PBS fame with "that guy from Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling." ========== A few months ago, I learned the WWF rarely if ever referred to itself by those 3 letters prior to Vince taking over in 1984. It was sometimes called Championship Wrestling, sometimes All Star Wrestling, and other times just plain "Wrestling." To those in the business it was simply "New York." To others it was the Northeast(ern) Territory. Makes sense in a way since nobody ever called New Japan "the IWGP." That was just the name of the top belt. ========== Reading about Nobi's fanfic faux pas reminded me of the time I got Adam Page mixed up with Adam Cole about a decade ago. That's when I realized Vince was right as usual when he made Cade, Helms, and Regal change their first names to Garrison, Gregory & William. Having too many Lances, Shanes, and Steves in the same fed really would lead to confusion! Vince: 93,173. IWC: 2. Vince wins again. ========== Hung out with my little 3-year-old cousin the other day and later got an interesting text from his mom with accompanying video. Quick reminder, she happens to be the only Aldo Montoya fan I ever met while also being the sister of my more famous wrestling fan cousin. I doubt she's watched any wrestling since 2000 and her fandom (which was never super strong to begin with) peaked in 95-96. Anyway, the text read... "Thanks for teaching my son the Hunter Hurst Helmsley royal bow. " Nothing unique or interesting about me passing down my years of wisdom to the youth. Do it all the time. What's really interesting here is her actually remembering Hunter "Hurst" Helmsley and his bow. Popped huge for that. The kid still needs some work on his bow btw. But that's what I'm here for. We'll work on it again next time.

Came across this interesting Ness post last week when looking for old fanfic drafts I posted... A Cena [best match] countdown would actually be interesting as I think despite being so sloppy and awkward early on, he has a catalog that could rival someone like Shawn as blasphemous as that sounds. Dat Umaga match tho. and now I'm tempted to try my hand at it. Maybe later. Umaga #1 obvs.

^I've got 5 minutes. Let's do this. Mostly in chronological order...
Top 10 John Cena Matches *Can't list something I haven't seen and will try to refrain from multi-man matches.
vs. Angle- No Mercy 2003 vs. Undertaker- Smackdown June 2004 vs. JBL- Judgment Day 2005 9. vs. Triple H- Wrestlemania 22 1. vs. Umaga- Royal Rumble 2007 vs. Michaels- Wrestlemania 23 vs. Michaels- Raw April 2007 vs. Batista- Summerslam 2008 vs. Cesaro- Raw February 2014 ======= 10. vs. The Rock- Wrestlemania 2012
*I'm not 100% sold on the Rock match at #10 but I'm running out of time. That's still a solid Top 10. Keep in mind there's also years of stuff I haven't seen, and I intentionally refrained from including multi-man matches.
