Saw this weird facebook boomer post putting Hillary on par with other slasher villains. I assume her # is whatever the benghazi was. There was one I didn't recognize, Victory Crawley. So this Hatchet series is it any good? Even if judged on the proper scale?

Hatchet is ok if you like slashers. Very inspired by Friday the 13th. Not surprising he was pegged to work on the Friday the 13th game.

OK so I never realized until recently browsing through Peacock horror section how big of a presence "Blumhouse" seems to be in horror movies now, seeing all these hit movies in their section appears to me like they have a monopoly on the horror genre? I had never heard of them before browsing through and seeing they made the Insidious movies and just about every other horror movies I see mentioned on PW or social media. I had no idea they were behind those mediocre as fuck new Halloween movies. The "They/Them" movie on there does look interesting though.
I watched Exorcist III last night. I'm old enough to remember my parents bringing this tape home as a brand new release from the video store, and letting me watch it with them when I couldn't have been any older than 5. Some of the bloody religious imagery at the beginning of the movie was burned into my consciousness and I'm sure had an impact on my view of religion in life on a subconscious level.
But I don't think I have ever properly watched Exorcist III all the way through until last night. I had no idea Brad Dourif was in it, I'm always praising him on PW as one of the GOAT actors but watching this last night it dawned on me that his only real acting prowess seems to be in going off the fucking rails as a psycho haha. That episode of X-Files he was in= epic of the cinema.
Part of me loved the movie and part of me thought it was weird in a bad way. I LOVE all of the dialogue between George C. Scott and his priest buddy in the early parts of the movie, such great acting from both guys those scenes are marvelous.
I'm not one to nitpick on silly minor plot holes in movies but this one had some major ones that I couldn't get past. Supposedly Damian Karras from the first movie never actually died, he got up from his fall down the stairs according to this movie and wandered the streets until he was picked up and put into an insane asylum with amnesia. That doesn't make any sense and I spent almost the entire movie trying to figure out what the fuck was going on before I finally realized this was what they were selling.
Also the scene where the possessed nurse almost cuts his daughters head off with the scissors was so slapstick goofy it kinda ruined the movie for me.
They were really onto something this was almost a great movie. It does have great elements but overall I would give this thumbs down, even though I wanted desperately to love it.

shinobimusashi Yeah they have a huge stake in the horror game. V/H/S 99 Ozzy’s Dungeon was fantastic and I enjoyed shredding & Suicide Bid as well. Didn’t care much for the other two. The supernatural elements that get shoehorned into these at the last moment brings a lot of it down for me, like Suicide Bid was a frightening enough concept without the undead. Speaking of Suicide Bid, I paused it to do something..come back and let it play for 10 minutes. The audio continues but the still shot doesn’t (of the girl buried alive) and the whole time I sat there thinking they were trying to do some artsy stuff by having it be audio only from there on outi hadn’t closed the Picture in Picture 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Fucking hard R.

Exorcist 3 is one of the most sampled movies in industrial music just for those conversations.
For VHS Ozzy's Dungeon was amazing. Flying Lotus def made a name for himself in horror there. I hope they can coax him into doing a full film. I fucking love he got David Lynch to do a guest track with him on "Fire Is Coming". Zoe Cooper writing that came out of fucking nowhere. She is mostly a minor character actress and makeup / fx person. She will return for VHS 85 writing something for it. But holy shit that segment was just crazy.
To Hell And Back is still my fav segment though as the hell landscape was just amazing on a low budget.
The lineup for V/H/S/85 is insane looking.
David Bruckner - Night House, Hellraiser Scott Derrickson - Sinister, The Black Phone Gigi Saul Guerrero - Funhouse, Trap House Natasha Kermani - Lucky, Imitation Girl Mike P. Nelson - Wrong Turn (2021), The Domestics
Bruckner and Derrickson on this film makes me think they are trying to take it to the next level as both are huge horror directors.

Barbarian was fucking amazing. So glad I didn’t know what the movie was about and listened to everyone that said “just go see it.”
Surprised it was on Disney+ so early but I’m not complaining.

Barbarian went way under the radar for sure. Seeing an explosion of talk on it now it is on streaming services. I read the plot before watched and still found it very enjoyable. I saw a handful of posts on twitter after it premiered at TIFF and every one was along the lines of “see Barbarian, don’t read what it’s about, the trailer is misleading on purpose just see it.” That sold me, then I started seeing more posts when it got released on Disney and so I avoided any talk about it until I could sit down and watch it last night. First movie in a loooong time that gave me nightmares. My wife doesn’t get disturbed easily and she was even shook when we went to bed last night. There’s a few things that are a little lazy or cheesy now that I think back on it but nothing so distracting that it makes the movie any less good. So awesome. … Is VHS 99 worth watching? I dunno if I’m in the mood for another found footage movie and the reviews on it are mixed.

Recent favorites are Barbarian and Deadstream.
Overall favorites are Threads (1984), Begotten (1989/1991), Possession (1981), Kario/Pulse (2001), Martyrs (2008) and A Tale of Two Sisters (2003).
Possession is a classic possession film that is very creepy. Martyrs is THE french extreme film. Tale of Two Sisters is wild Korean horror story you will watch twice at least. Kairo a really bizarre ghost story and my single favorite horror film.
Other two are weirder. Threads is not a horror film but the most horrifying film made, a stone cold look at the realities of nuclear war.
Begotten is a silent experimental gore film that is very hard to explain. Basically an hour of people being ripped apart is a distressed black and white style. Not for everyone, but creative genius. The director would follow this up with Shadow of the Vampire, using what he learned doing this film for Shadows.
For some lesser known fun films look into: Suicide Club / Suicide Circle, Battle Royale, Frontier(s), Cure (1997), Shutter (2008), Parasite Eve (1997), Kansen / Infection (2004), Ichi the Killer (you want gore, this is gore), As the Gods Will (2014), Elfen Lied (anime, cute and incredibly violent), Frozen (2010, Green), Grace (2009), Blackcoat's Daughter / February (2015), Rare Exports (2010, Christmas Horror), Trollhunter (2010), Shadow of the Vampire (2000).
Hope there are some you have not seen in this list. Most are subtitled as there have not been many great hidden gems released in English.

What are people’s favourite horror movies? Especially ones that are currently streaming/recent releases that may have gone under the radar. I’m on a mission to watch as much horror as possible lately haha Throw me all the recommendations! Scarier the better. Gorier the better. I've horrored myself right on out this month lol. I've watched quite a bit. I got hooked on the old school black and white stuff mostly this month. Besides 1 or 2 I've never really gotten into the original Universal monsters until this month I watched the original Dracula from 1931 and it was very cool. Lugosi's performance as Dracula was pretty damn magical. I really also dug Wolfman and Wolfman vs Frankenstein. Creature From The Black Lagoon is one that I watched a few years ago and it always hits the spot, it just has something about it it's got that dreamy 1950's drive through theater type charm about it. I'm saving The Bride of Frankenstein for tomorrow night. I have never seen it but always loved the original Frankenstein since I was little. I heard that Bride is much better so I'm pretty stoked about watching it finally. One DVD I've had for a while but never watched is The Haunting from 1963. I put it on randomly one night earlier this month getting ready for bed and heard that classic sample "Look I know the supernatural isn't something that's supposed to happen but it does" that I grew up listening to on the White Zombie "Astro Creep 2000" album(one of the first CD's I ever got). I had no idea this was where that sample was from so that got me all giddy inside when I heard that. It was a damn fine movie for it's time and much better than House On Haunted Hill from the previous decade. I do still love House On Haunted Hill though. Speaking of I finally sat down and watched the full 1999 remake of House On Haunted Hill and jesus that was easily one of the worst remakes ever, makes Rob Zombie's Halloween remakes look respectful. They truly shit all over the original in every way. Which makes me appreciate the remake of Night Of The Living Dead 1990 even more. To me it is one of the all time best remakes of any movie in any genre, they paid so much respect to the original movie while the changes they did make were really awesome. I watched that one again a few weeks ago and it always not only hits the spot but fucking nails the spot like a solid core door over a window to keep the zombies out. That song that plays in the outro credits is so dope. Lets see, lets see, what else, ah Psycho from 1960. It's been a few years since I watched this for the first time but man this to me has got to be the perfect horror movie. If I were to ever do a big fancy countdown top 100 I think Psycho would be my safe bet for #1. Just look how perfectly this movie was shot, the score, the acting, the story, then look at the context and the influence the movie had for generations. Just wow. Masterpiece. And I had the chance to dig out some VHS tapes I have the 2002 Resident Evil, the 1990 Michael Keaton thriller Pacific Heights, and Night Of The Hunter. My VCR ate Pacific Heights when I tried to rewind it, so RIP to that tape. Night Of The Hunter was another one that just really hit the spot for me this month. Robert Mitchum is amazing in this one and the original Cape Fear what a phenomenal actor and this character in Night Of The Hunter is just lovely. Night Of The Hunter is got to be up there with Psycho as one of the all time great classics that still really not only holds up well today but has aged like fine wine. That scene where they show the lady in the car in the bottom of the river, her hair flowing with the current of the water, her throat slit open like she's got another mouth, wow. There were a few others I watched in there. All old stuff, I can't get into CGI or digital looking horror movies I got to have that shot on 35mm film look. I finally got a DVD copy of Body Parts the Jeff Fahey movie from like 1991. Been wanting this for a long time but DVD's were really expensive because it had been out of print for so long. This movie was not as good as I remembered. Very wacky story about a head transplant. Had a very similar feel to me as Bone Collector where you could tell they just made a movie out of a book of the week type story. Also scored Lord Of Illusion with Scott Bakula from 1995. Always wanted to really love this movie but it's just lacking something I still can't put my thumb down on. I love that it has Vincent Shiavelli in it that scene with him and Bakula is money. I think the director just tried too hard with this story, could have just went all out with some supernatural balls to the wall shit but chose to try to really go noire with it and it just didn't work. The movie does have a lot going for it, the music score is five star, Bakula is great in the lead role, and it's just a really well made 90's horror film but it feels like it drags and something's missing. I did try to watch some of They/Them it seemed really interesting but you could tell they were just trying to be too careful not to get in trouble with that theme and it fell flat because of it.

Kairo is one of my favourite horror movies too, although as I get older I find it harder to enjoy because my attention span is getting worse and it's a slow burn. Want to rewatch Cure and Charisma too, although they are also slow burns by the same director, but they deserve another chance based on how much I love Kairo. Shutter is now my favourite horror film, but very hard to find. 2005 film from Thailand. Very well executed Asian ghost story with two phenomenal twists. It Follows is very high on my list, a pure dread film with some tense moments. Smile takes some similar cues but is mostly its own film. Love both. Getting onto Neo Zeed's post, Frakenstein is great but Bride of Frakenstein is so much better. Bela Lugosi's Dracula is obviously iconic, Christopher Lee's performance from the 50s is just as good and even more horrifying from a visual perspective. There are three haunted house movies that merge into one in my mind. The Haunting, Haunting On Hill House and The House on Haunted Hill. Two of these were remade within a year of each other in the 90s which adds to the confusion. I like all of the original films but none stands out because like I said they all blur together. I love the original Night of the Living Dead, will have to check out the remake. Unpopular opinion time: the original The Fly from the 50s is far better than the Jeff Goldblum 80s version. The latter mainly goes for the visual horror while the original is more understated, suspenseful, and raises some interesting moral questions.

Crap, I missed Shutter. The original is amazing.
Another one I forgot to mention was Marebito. While best known for the Ju-On stuff, this is Takashi Shimizu's masterpiece. Truly unique story.
More recent Asian films worth watching are The Wailing and Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum.
It Follows also high on my list, but I presume many already seen it by now. If not, it is an amazing film.
Older film that often goes overlooked is The Entity. Great concept with a crazy fucking payoff. Prince of Darkness goes overlooked a lot too these days but also was great.

I know it often can be hit or miss, but suggest people check out American Horror Story this year. Wild season about the NYC 80's gay S/M club scene that came post disco and Warhol but before the Peter Gatien and church era of the NYC underground.
Plays around with NYC underground urban legends from the 80's like breakers, queer hunters and the AIDS epidemic being a bioweapon from Plum Island.
Fucking killer proto-goth / early goth soundtrack too. For those not the gay scene was where the goth scene was in NYC during the 80's. This day most goth events are off events at gay clubs in this area at least.
Structure for this season is a crime drama basically, which works so damn well.
AIDS itself is not mentioned and looks like they are pretending it does not exist with another virus taking its place. Which is a nice touch if you are familiar with AIDS in NYC's queer culture. That shit was a real horror story. I know some who survived it, and their stories are harrowing.

One more film that went under the radar was The Tunnel (2011). Found footage film about the abandoned railway tunnels under Sydney. One of the better films in the found footage horror genre. Shot on location with some real cool narrative twists that other film have not really used. Was also released via Bit Torrent, since it was crowdfunded which was really wild.

I didn't realise Shutter was remade.
Marebito is a fascinating and unique concept but I felt the prologue teased such a monumental thing - an investigator in some underground world trying to unearth literally the scariest thing ever - it was never going to deliver and even the clever swerve the film took was disappointing given those lofty expectations. So when the main story starts in the human world, after exploring this bizzaro fantasy world - I was already half tapped out.

The most scared I’ve been in a movie is The Strangers. The anticipation and dread was just killing me.
The most fun I’ve had in a scary movie is Drag Me to Hell.
Train to Busan is my favorite I’ve seen in the last year or so.
Some other favorites off the top of my head would include Scream, Sinister, and Dead Silence. I also dig on found footage films like I just watched Hell House last weekend and it’s great.

So when the main story starts in the human world, after exploring this bizzaro fantasy world - I was already half tapped out. I hear that. It really did tease something insane, but failed to deliver. Still was a unique story though and pretty good movie. Shutter remake was good as they brought in Masayuki Ochiai for it. He did Parasite Eve and Kasnen / Infection. Critics panned it for being another remake, but Ochiai's take was not bad. Was remade three other times as well, but did not see those remakes. Speaking of Ochiai, Saimin / Hypnosis (1999) was another fun asian horror film that went under the radar. Took me forever to find a copy back in the day. /// While not as good mikec Hell House LLC has two sequels and a prequel coming. I liked the series for what it was, just a fun time. While I generally no longer watch zombie films because they are all the same IMO, Train to Busan was a real standout film. The sequel of sorts, Peninsula, sadly was not as good. There is an American remake, but it was sidelined for now with Evil Dead Rise taking its place in the release schedule.

Some really awesome suggestions here! Love there is a mix between years of release and especially origin of release. I’ve seen Martyrs once before but it’s been awhile, System bought a physical copy so going to rewatch it again when it arrives. A lot of the very niche horror films System had introduced me to a few but a lot of these I haven’t heard of before. So thanks for all the recommendations!

It’s a very very hit and miss show though New season is very divisive with fans as it is hella gay and very, very different than anything they have done before since nothing so far has been remotely supernatural. It is human killers and a virus. I am loving it though. Up there with Asylum for me.
