EDIT: Said disclaimer but just had the Hoyts logo on it Just got back from Terrifier 2, seeing all the hype with people vomiting/fainting thought I was going to be underwhelmed with the gore considering they had staff militantly checking IDs and a disclaimer from the cinema chain right before the film starts which I’ve never seen happen before. but it definitely delivered. Kept saying “it can’t be any worse than Ichi the Killer” in terms of gore. It is. Probably on par with Tokyo Gore Police and even then my memory of that is hazy. I normally hate people talking through films immensely but I didn’t mind this apart from the quiet scenes. On top of that it’s a fantastic slasher film, if you can’t forgive the tropes of this genre then don’t see it because realistic it is not. Art the clown is absolutely hilarious, film definitely has a sick sense of humour especially when it comes to cereal. If you’re unfamiliar with Elliott Fullam, look up his TikToks as that’s just the way he talks/acts in real life though I thought it worked for his character but some may see it as bad acting. He also makes music which is worth checking out too, much better than standard TikToker fare. I also really liked the dynamic that his big sister protected him, not the other way around as a damsel in distress (as much as can be avoided in a slasher film). I thought the rest of the cast were great. Mild spoiler so scroll away if you don’t want to hear anything: Despite being credited in the opening and closing credits as he’d play a significant role, Jericho is only in the mid-credits scene and that’s it. Distracting the whole film waiting for him to pop up. I loved it and I’m so happy a film this graphic and low budget is a relative hit at the box office.

Well this is really odd but exciting news. Peacocked ordered up a Camp Crystal Lake prequel series and tagged Bryan Fuller as showrunner. A24 studio also involved.

There is such a great chance to do a prequel with Friday and really explore so much of the Voorhees family origin, one of the things I love about the first movie and the series is that they left so much of that unexplained, always sends my imagination going crazy watching the movies now and thinking of all the possibilities as far as explaining the backstory to this family, and why Jason is the way he is.
I came up with a really elaborate story to explain it all I thought about making it a fan fic but since reading Heart Shaped Box I’m tempted to turn it into a book and change all the characters enough to where it is an original story, one that is obviously inspired by Friday. But my story is an alternate sequel to part 5 where Tommy becomes the new Jason and goes on a very realistic killing spree. Two FBI agents go on a manhunt to find him, one of the agents is devout Christian the other like a paranormal expert uncovers all this detailed info on the Voorhees family and they track down and interview survivors from part 2, 3, and 4.

Finally watched Bride of Frankenstein last night, loved it it was great but not as good as I had my hopes up for. I would disagree with the opinion that it’s better than the original Frankenstein it just doesn’t have those little scenes/moments that make that one great to me, but a worthy and fun sequel nonetheless.

Watched Deadstream again. Think this will be one of my top tier horror films. Def one of the best found footage films. They took so many of the problems of the found footage and found really creative solutions for them. Mounted cams, using a "selfie" cam while still, having a tablet to check out feeds from different cameras, etc. Streaming concept allows for talking with people outside of the situations which makes things great too. Also uses a small environment to full effect, rather than a large one where they never visit the same room twice.
The metacommentary on streaming and social media is also fucking hilarious.
Since this fell through the hype cracks, highly suggest people who missed it check it out.

I was browsing Amazon Prime and randomly found the 2008 Shutter remake so put it on. It naturally has the glossier sheen of an American production compared to the Asian original, but besides that it was a faithful (almost shit for shot) and well-executed remake. I really liked it. Kept the super haunting ending and the two big reveals that came before. Found a fascinating comparison showing a difference in the morality of the lead male character. It brings up a great point: my girlfriend said she didn't feel as scared by the ending because the guy was clearly a shithead and deserved it, while the original is a bit more shades of grey. In any case that final shot is one of the most unsettling endings ever. intosurvival.blogspot.com/2011/10/two-takes-on-evil-shutter-vs-shutter.html?m=1

Yeah remake was good because they brought in Masayuki Ochiai for it, so they captured the j-horror style perfectly. Still prefer the original, but remake was nearly as good. My only real complaint about the remake is as sad, it is nearly a shot for shot remake. Feel like Ochiai should have taken more liberties with the script. But I also get him knowing how Americans feel about remakes, not wanting to mess with what worked.
And well, it paid off for Ochiai as after this he was tagged to end the Ju-On series with the final two films.

Watched Pearl. Really fun film. Mia Goth co-wrote this and it shows as she is amazing in it.
Inspirations shine through hard. Has a very Wizard of Oz vibe visually and captures the Technicolor era very well. Def does not feel like an add on film and stands on it's own I feel like.
Def is the year of Mia Goth.
Saw too for Maxxxine Goth is added as an executive producer. Looks like West is trying to drag her into the horror club. Curious if she writes for that one as well.

Really want to know anyone else’s thoughts on Terrifier 2 from PW if they can stomach it. It’s been submitted for academy consideration  Deadstream: Fun comedy film with like c said some really inventive camera stuff when it comes to found footage style films. Comedy took me out of the horror though so I wasn’t too in that half of it. Run Sweetheart Run: Barbarian if your first instinct was correct. Decent horror film I definitely wasn’t expecting the supernatural elements going into it blind
Very pro feminist film but it doesn’t shove “all men are bad” down your throat that much considering the story of the film.

Got someone to watch Deadstream WHOO!!! Def a fun horror film and not a serious scary one. I am guessing that will be this team's style moving forward as the hell segment in VHS was the same way.

AHS continues to be fire this season. Episode 5 was fucking insane. Really creepy stuff in it.
If people are sleeping on this, highly suggest catching up. My fav season hands down now. It is fucking twisted. They stick the landing will easily be the best season of the show.
///
I may watch Terrifer 2 sooner or later, but stuff like that tends to bore me. Read about the gore, does not seem worse than stuff like Art of the Devil or Guinea Pig. And yeah, I read about the Guinea Pig homage with the eye scene. Glad to hear the director made 8 million from his 250k investment though. I assume his next film will have a studio pay for it.

What's the gimmick to the season? Always leery of doing a quick google on things I haven't watched. I have the series on my list, but I think I'm likely gonna watch it based on what sounds good rather than starting from episode 1.

People killing gay men in NYC in the 80's. Done as a cop drama basically where they are hunting the killer.

People as in not just a single Dahmer doing it? Or is that the theme they're trying to piece together? Either way sounds promising I suppose especially since I haven't watched any of the Netflix Hybristophilia stuff.

Barbarian is fantastic. Recency bias tells me I like it more than Smile but as it cools off I think I will rate each movie roughly equally, although Barbarian is certainly a lot more original and inventive. That along with Incancation gives you an above average year for horror.

AHS still going strong with one final week left. Mysterious illness def looks like AIDS afterall. They kind of smoke and mirrored it. Looks like next week is a time jump finale.
Saw someone describe this season as Zodiac like, and that is a good description, feels a lot like the Zodiac movie. Instead of more in your face horror, this is more of uncovering a mysteries.

NATH45 Radio Silence in talks to revive Escape from NY. Their pitch will involve Kurt Russell and presume at least Escape from NY already happened. Other cool shit in the pipeline is the Bioshock movie is finally moving with a script being written now, Welcome to Derry being developed by HBO to do the last time Pennywise appeared in the 1960's, and Smith saying he is thinking of doing another Red State movie and Lionsgate being onboard for it.

AHS wrapped up. Mysterious virus in the end was AIDS. Just smoke and mirrored it in the first few episodes to mimic the early confusion about what was happening to gay men in the 80's.
Ending with the AIDS epidemic ends the series with a real fucking gut punch. Like semishook with the direction they took this in for the finale. Did not see this twist coming at all with the real horror being the spread of AIDS throughout the characters as the series was going on. And the portrayal of AIDS is brutal, particularly when compared to pain that sadism inflicts.
Also they do push the bar in this final episode for what you can expect from "tv" shows. Some gruesome stuff.
They stuck the landing and this is now my favorite season of AHS, beating out even Asylum.

That is what I assume they plan to do. For Scream they used the first film, but did not really get into the other sequels all that much.
Pitch is said to be real early in the process though without a studio signing off yet.

There's an entire world to build if they wanted to. Snake Plissken is a war hero who served in WW3 in Russia (timely.. ) who then turned to a life of crime after feeling betrayed by the United States - it could be a very sharply written piece littered with political and social commentary.

Yeah think that is why they want it with Russell so badly, there is so much they can do. Also can channel those Logan vibes of the old hero struggling to survive in a world that moved on.
Problem I see is it will be an expensive movie to make with the settings and paying for Russell. Can't just shoot this in a random neighborhood with actors working for exposure like you can any horror film. To do it right, they need to build the world.

Kurt Russell is also 71 years old, the better option would be casting his son, Wyatt and aging him appropriately to fit the timeline. Plissken also was a man of few words, so there isn't extensive verbal characteristics that need to be emulated. It's more a case of capturing the essence of the character. But, Wyatt has previously stated he doesn't have a desire to play the character. But if it means a being a leading man in a potential franchise, and millions of dollars - he might change his mind. As a fan (and as much as I have grown to hate the pacing of EFNY) I'd love to see the WW3 campaign explored, the "Leningrad Ruse" where he loses his eye and what a life of crime looks like. Just re-exploring the wikipedia plotpoints : " amidst total war against an alliance of China and the Soviet Union.. Air Force One is hijacked by a guerrilla fighter of the National Liberation Front of America " It's so topical, it was then, and is now. The US's fear of Russia and China and left-wing ideology hasn't change in 40 years. My only concern with Radio Silence (based on Scream) is it becomes too smart for it's own good and continually throws those meta-jabs out as social commentary rather than it being subconscious.

The meta stuff was really for Scream, and that is one of the things the series is known for. Was not in their other stuff like Ready or Not or Southbound.
And think they want old man Russell for it. Wyatt refuses to do the role.
It appears they locked down the movie yesterday and are producing and directing. It is listed as a remake though, which is disappointing. But people use that term weirdly now to refer to all restarts of old series. More concerning is they are looking for a writer instead of having a script to start with. If you need to hire a writer after you start, things tends not to be so good.
