Making an all purpose horror thread since we got years of horror films starting to release in a very short period, and most do not really need their own threads. Will be my entertainment forum politics thread <.<
///
The genius special effects creator behind Robocop, Empire Strikes Back, Jurassic Park, Starship Troopers and others is releasing his pet project he been toying win since right after Return of the Jedi was released. It is a stop motion based full length horror film. Looks absolutely insane.

Also out this week is The Witch Part 2: The Other One. The Witch Part 1: The Subversion was a surprising great action horror film, so really looking forward to this when it hits a medium I can watch it on.

Finally for now, M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller Knock at the Cabin wrapped up shooting. This is widely believed to be a take on the The Cabin at the End of the World, a great book about a doomsday cult that takes a family hostage that tells them unless they sacrifice one of their family the world ends and the choice is theirs to make. They kill one of the three, or everyone sits together and the end of the world comes.
Not sure if Shyamalan is doing this, as he did not buy the rights, but people noted everything about this film and the book align that was released so far, and this story feels like something that Shyamalan would have came up with as it has some major twists. Very likely he stole the concept and jazzed it up a bit.

I lied one more. Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass) finished recasting for his Fall of the House Usher adaptation for Netflix and production should start soon. Will be eight episodes and released sometime next year. Narrative shell is the same as the story, Narrator is called to visit his old friend Roderick who after some time reveals he entombed Madeline before she died. Rest of the story will be much different he said. Ending should still be the narrator fleeing as the House of Usher is torn apart and falls into the lake. How we get from point A to point B will be the fun of this one as he plans to take the themes of the story and turn them to 11.
Some interesting casting revealed so far too. Mark Hamill is involved. Mary McDonnell (Margin Call) as well. Samantha Sloyan, Carla Gugino, T'Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Zach Gilford and some of his other regulars will be back.
After a recast, Bruce Greenwood (Gerald's Game) will take on the role of Roderick.

Mad God looks insane.
I hope this next project is a return to form for M Night. Dude is a really good storyteller and his movies are shot very well. He’s great at holding suspense and creating a creepy atmosphere. But his more recent stuff has been a letdown. I guess I liked Split and Glass overall but I was also kinda meh on the whole thing. Great idea but didn’t translate well to the big screen for me.

Great idea but didn’t translate well to the big screen for me. If it is Cabin at the End of the World it will be a return to form. The book is very tense, very unsettling, and very shocking. Recently rewatched You're Next and while I did not like it on released, def liked it a lot more on rewatch. Think I watched that close to binging french extreme and revenge horror, so the whole strong female lead slaughtering her attackers was just another film in that style. ///// So bummed, just learned this weekend there will be an airing of the Mother of Tears trilogy remastered in NYC with Argento introducing them. Showing 17 of his films 4k remastered over three days closing with his new film. Only just found out about it. Would have so went to see Mother of Tears and Bird with the Crystal Plumage. May be replays so hopefully I can at least catch Susperia in 4k on the big screen.

She's been out of town then I've been out of town and now I'm out of town again. Also last two weekends was the kids' birthday parties so we could get them in before school ended and we moved away. Get back to me in a year or two.

Should also be noted that the new Scream is rumored to be set in New York City, which will be an interesting change. I’d imagine it might focus a bit more on Gail (especially now with Neve out) but I wonder how the younger cast ties into it.

Sounds like the new Scream is falling apart. Studio will not pay Neve Campbell what she wanted so she walked. Others may follow.

Sounds like the new Scream is falling apart. Studio will not pay Neve Campbell what she wanted so she walked. Others may follow. No one else is going to follow - Courtney already signed to come back and she’s the other big player and the four biggest young stars are coming back with Ortega, Barrera and the twins. That’s literally everyone coming back besides Neve. Also confirmed the return of Hayden Panahoweveritsspelled which is a huge win for the fans. The loss of Neve is a huge one obviously but I have no clue what else you’re talking about.

Neve Campbell leaving the Scream franchise absolutely blows.
At the same time though, it makes me even more intrigued about what they do, with the next installment of the series.

Sounded like people were unhappy. Sucks for Radio Silence, as this is a fight between Neve and the studio and now they are likely facing a rapidly rewritten script and a demand to get shooting started ASAP.
Then again, not using Sidney gives them the chance to move the series beyond her.

Film got great reviews when it premiered, but should be expected from Scott Derrickson adopting Joe hill. Said Hawke's performance was very intense.

Weird, studio wants a release date on the new Scream for March 31, 2023. This is before the screenplay is finalized and any shooting even started. Gonna be a fast made film with no time for editing based on test screening.

Did Black Phone tonight. It is REALLY good. Derrickson's best horror film. Better than Sinister overall.
Film is a late 70's period piece and a masterpiece. For those unaware, this is based on a Joe Hill story, so gets a very strong King feel to it but with the imagery and mastery of mood of Sinister. So like a harder edge of the classic King stories. And like Sinister, Ethan Hawke is amazing.
Trailer really does not do this film justice at all, much like Sinister. Story is about a ruthless serial killer who kidnaps and murders children, but goes into a totally different direction with it when a disconnected phone in the room a kid is being held hostage in starts to rings.

Also from the media scrum for Black Phone Jason Blum says he wants Englund to take the claw one final time, and plans to do what he can to make it happen. Craven estate owns the rights to the franchise so not too hard for him to get the rights. Will just need the right story and right team to get Englund back.

The Black Phone (Scott Derrickson, 2021)Spoilers ahead, in case you haven't seen it yet. For some reason this movie is labelled as 2021 despite it being released right about...now. Let's start by saying I'm nowhere near as high on this movie as c is. 6/10, and that's generous. Nothing about The Black Phone is bad, but nothing is great either. It's as if the movie couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a serial killer film or a supernatural film, and ended up awkwardly sat in the middle, taking cues from both genres but not doing either particularly well. It was interesting enough to keep me watching to the end, but not super tense, or thrilling. Nothing was fleshed out. The child killer living in the same house as his brother is an interesting twist on paper, but the execution was just lazy. The sister having her dream premonitions in the end didn't add anything to the plot apart from some half-assed religious pondering and a half-assed alcoholic father redemption angle. If the sister didn't have those premonitions, nothing would have changed, except the cops wouldn't have found them as quickly. Finn would have escaped exactly as he did. As for the titular Black Phone, well it's a nice gimmick, and was the most interesting part of the film, but as a whole it fell flat. Why? You could have gone in any number of interesting directions, but they went with the most straightforward and banal one, which is that the dead kids were helping him after all, no ulterior motives, no twists, they just told him exactly what to do and he did it and it worked, like some dark version of Home Alone. Ethan Hawke's serial killer is a very interesting personality, but again, not fleshed out enough. One of the Black Phone kids talked about him playing a game, and that he should avoid being a naughty boy. Sounded like the start of a really interesting plot arc, but it fizzled out, just like everything else. Honestly when Ethan Hawke summoned his dog, I couldn't help but think of Final Fantasy 7: Rufus Shinra and his dog teaming up to face poor little Cloud Strife, all on his own. {Spoiler} "]

Apartment 7A by Natalie Erika James that wrapped up filming last month appears to be a secret prequel to Rosemary's Baby. Will be about Terry Gionoffrio and how the Castevets found her and cleaned her up, and what drove her suicide.

Hulu's Hellraiser remake got a hard R. By the Night House team with Barker producing. Big news is that it is basically done and rated. So ready to air this fall. Still no word on the series HBO max ordered but most presume it will be killed if not already dead.
New Saw ordered. Kevin Greutert who did Saw VI and 3D is directing. Assume this is paint by numbers to keep the rights.

After a fairly long drought it is horror time. Hellraiser drops this week and is getting pretty good reviews. Has a new Hell Priest that looks like Pinhead, but does not share his story. Also some new cenobites and a crazy looking box.
Next week get the finale of the Halloween trilogy, which is said to have an ending fans will not be happy with. Looks like it involves demasking Myers.
Then month's end get VHS-99.
Finally early in Nov, we get the X prequel Pearl that got great festival reviews.
Not seen either yet, but the new Interview with a Vampire and Let the Right One In series also have started or will soon. Shows up on the pirate sites at least. I will tentatively watch Interview with a Vampire hoping after they do the original book, they do The Vampire Lestat which is a far more interesting book, then the absolutely insane Queen of the Damned which was not done justice.

Already mentioned it in the movie thread but Smile is definitely worth a watch
Much better horror film than marketing would lead you to believe as it looks like it could be on par with Truth or Dare and movies like that, but I thought it was fantastic.
Keen for a new Saw also, great news

Sadly not a lot of really good stuff it appears making its way through fests. Fantastic Fest had only a few films I was interested in.
Piggy gets a lot of hype but it is the traditional girl bullied gets revenge film. These films are kind of just more of the same to me.
Shin Ultraman looks amazing, but will be a love it or hate type of movie for many.
Marvel's Werewolf by Night got some good reviews as a fun horror film done in the Castle style.
Screamfest is next with the premiere of Deer Camp '86, which could go either way. Big film is the debut of The Matriarch, which could be good in a Hereditary style way. Also The Revelation will debut, which gets some talk as it is about a COVID-19 conspiracy theorist who believes starts the end times. Slayers also debuts which looks to be a fun vampire film. But nothing that is like OMG I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THAT AGAIN. Best film of Screamfest will likely be the screening of Lost Boys. Between these two fests the only film I really been waiting for was VHS-99.

I am also REALLY pissed it looks like The People's Joker may be destroyed after a single screening. Was an insane film in a queerbent Batman universe. Joker is a transwoman from Smallville looking for his big break played by Vera Drew, who is abused by a trans man Mr J (who is based off Jason Todd and Leto's Joker). Batman in this universe was a ultra right wing closeted psychopath who abuses Mr J. The goal was to blend all of the past Batman films into one and gender bend them. It is meant to be parody but DC's lawyers said nope you are not showing this shit to anyone. It got pretty good reviews in the first screening but no one wants to touch it as it too costly to buy the rights, and getting it cleared as parody will likely require the supreme court to approve it due to the implications for rights holders.
At least the trailer lives on until the likely DC lawsuit goes through forcing destruction. Can see they even lifted lines from the Joker as it started as a re-edit of the film.

While critics kind of panned it, just watched My Best Friend's Exorcism and loved it. It was made completely in the style of a cheesy 80's horror film and is just a ton of fun.
