I've been on an early 2000's nostalgia trip recently with Simple Plan and Good Charlotte - so I've decided to listen to all of Sum 41's album in chronological order.
Apparently they've had seven albums (and an EP) but I've only ever listened to three of them (and the EP) so this is very exciting!

Sum 41 were my first favourite band.
The first EP Half Hour of Power might be my favourite of their releases. They added a few minutes of silence to pad out the album to exactly 30 minutes runtime.
The first full length All Killer No Filler is what made them superstars. Has their biggest hits. Fat Lip, Motivation, In Too Deep. Plus that fun metal track Pain For Pleasure.
They started going heavier with their next two albums, an odd mashup of heavy metal and pop punk which I quite liked. The fourth album Chuck has some straight up metal tracks including a poorly-disguised clone of Metallica's Battery.
After that they turned into limp-wristed radio rock, much like Green Day, and I stopped caring.

I have completed the 30 minutes of POWER. I haven't listened to this in over 15 years. I didn't like it when I first heard it - I'm more positive about it now, but it's a very strange experience. It starts off with a metal instrumental track (which I - apparently correctly - assumed would be the kind of thing Emperor would like). After that, it's got a few pre-American Idiot Green Day-style songs mixed in with some tracks that are more in the style of All Killer... (including Summer, which appeared on both releases). There's a drum solo track and a track that suddenly turns into a ska song. Then one where they morph into the Beastie Boys halfway through. This whole thing is a wild experience! Then another metal instrumental and a (kind of dragged out) pop punk song to finish things off. The 3.5 minutes of silence at the end kinda sucks. They could have easily fit another track or two (or maybe even three) in there. Lazy lazy men! I guess that kind of cheekiness fits with the image they were going for though. I enjoyed it overall! Like I said, I hadn't listened to it for AAAAAAGES, but I'll definitely be happy listening to it again soon. It throws a LOT of stuff into 26 minutes. There's plenty of variety and none of the tracks are bad. Fun!

It starts off with a metal instrumental track (which I - apparently correctly - assumed would be the kind of thing Emperor would like). It's a fantastic introduction. The question is - did you like it? Also I have to make everyone aware that the song is called Grab The Devil By The Horns And Fuck Him Up The Ass. The joys of youth. After that, it's got a few pre-American Idiot Green Day-style songs mixed in with some tracks that are more in the style of All Killer... (including Summer, which appeared on both releases). Among those are Machine Gun and Makes No Difference, two of my favourite Sum 41 songs. There's a drum solo track and a track that suddenly turns into a ska song. Then one where they morph into the Beastie Boys halfway through. This whole thing is a wild experience! Yeah it goes get pretty funky at that point. I don't like the rapping segment. Actually a part of that rap features at the start of the Fat Lip music video. They're just kids having a good time exploring every area of music they like, can't fault that. Then another metal instrumental and a (kind of dragged out) pop punk song to finish things off. For the benefit of the audience, the second metal instrumental is called Ride the Chariot to the Devil. Come to think of it, that should surely have been the title of introduction track. Surely you ride the chariot to the devil before you grab him by the horns and fuck him up the ass? The final track is the only dud of the album, dragged out is a good word to describe it. They couldn't drag it out to fill a few more minutes. They could have extended their shit-hot metal instrumentals by a couple of minutes each. It throws a LOT of stuff into 26 minutes. There's plenty of variety and none of the tracks are bad. Fun! Fun fun!

I've been listening to one of my fav albums of alllll time, Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion (by Fight Like Apes)
It's absolutely wild and I love it.
This is my fav song from it. I really don't think it's the kind of thing anyone here likes, but yeah!

I kinda like it @aaron. I'm going to take the opportunity to plug Polysics because they are maybe a little bit similar.

The thought of ditching Tina pains me but this would have to be Larry Legend's new theme if I ever get back to writing NGW (features bonus Doctor Who content)

Listened to Let It Go from Frozen and Surface Pressure from Encanto on the way to work this morning. That’s all because I’m lucky enough to have a short commute.

I’m listening to Avril Lavigne’s debut album right now.
This (and her second album) had some really really good songs on them. Yeah, Sk8r Boi seems kinda silly now, but it’s fun. This album has a lot going on - some really smart writing, catchy songs, slow ones, surprisingly heavy ones…it’s a great mix.
I think if she carried on the trajectory she was on, she could have become a pretty respected singer-songwriter. Unfortunately she seems to have regressed as time has gone on. She’s had a couple of decent songs since 2007 but some absolutely rotten ones (Hello Kitty is one of the worst things I’ve ever heard).
She’s also apparently not the original Avril anymore. I can relate hahaha!

I love Let Go. Don't really listen to anything beyond that, but start to finish I can listen to her first one. Sk8er Boi is one I can skip and sometimes I do! Goat revenge fantasy though.

We here again... Early 2000s throwback day featuring Linkin Park, Papa Roach, POD, Gorillaz, Limp Bizkit, and the immortal Bad Ronald... With System of a Down, Eminem, Cypress Hill, Alien Ant Farm, and Crush era Bon Jovi +Dynamite Hack, Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker, Disturbed, Wheatus, and Sum 41 this time around. The following still applies... Giving myself a well deserved Barry Horowitz pat on the back for having impeccable music taste in the early 2000s.

^ Been listening to that song a bit lately. Honestly the same 20 songs for like the last year on loop. And it was the opening theme to Clerks 3 which hit me int he right spot when I watched it a while back.

Perhaps controversial but I'm going to say it: Welcome to the Black Parade is an absolute masterpiece of songwriting. I refer to the song, not the album. The album is great but the title track is on another level.

Last week I was deep in 2000s mode. First I relived my party boy days with all your favorite early 2000s frat boy anthems. Then I moved on to two of the decade's best rock albums. Then it was back to podcasts for a few days. And today I got my weird on with two of my favorite band/album discoveries in recent years. Let's talk about them... Cromagnon's lone album Orgasm is uneven. Even unlistenable at times. But their masterpiece Caledonia is the greatest song of the 60s. First World of Bronze isn't terribly far behind. Genitalia has really grown on me. There's real beauty buried underneath the sound of screeching birds. I like the intro to Fantasy and the (admittedly repetitive) guitar riff in Crow of the Black Tree. Toth, Scribe 1 is the soundtrack to the apocalypse and another Cromagnon jam which has really grown on me. The story behind the band might just be even more bizarre than the music they created. Sadly much of the band's backstory seems to have been scrubbed from the internet. Just know Cromagnon mastermind Brian Elliot is one of my music heroes. Think I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating- if my old 2004 band Demon Semen ever reunited I would steer them in a Cromagnon-inspired direction. Not a ripoff. That would be derivative. But, like, I'd have a song with flute, harpsichord, and theremin played by people who have never picked up those instruments before while I shout-whispered lyrics in a language I just created. You know, that sort of thing. Comus' First Utterance is basically what would happen if musically gifted druids with a penchant for virgin sacrifice were dropped into early 70s England and consumed all the drugs...

Toto is so underrated. Rosanna has one of the best drum patterns of all time. Jeff Porcaro was a machine behind the kit.
