Brand new Hirie album came out Friday. I jammed it on my way to work that morning and throughout the weekend. I love this girl and her band, seen them live in Houston in July and was blown away, it was great. I used to think her first album from 2013 was just OK but over the years it has seriously grown on me and has become one of my favorites. Her follow up from a few years ago was pretty good too and has some of my favorite songs. This album is a further evolution away from reggae more into pop I think but I don't mind it as it works better for her style.
The new album gets really good with the last 4 songs. MVP is Frida Kahlo, man her voice is absolutely beautiful.
This is the second time she's put out an album on the anniversary day that my little sis passed away and I really appreciate her for it. She's my girl, can't wait to see her live again in Houston next month, will be on the front row with a raw cone spliff for sure.

Been in a Judas Priest mood ever since returning from Rochester. While I prefer Maiden to Priest, Stained Class (and probably Painkiller) are better than any Iron Maiden album imo.
Speaking of Rochester, I'm pretty sure I remember what I listened to coming and going. So let's do this...
On The Way
Black Sabbath (Dio era)- Mob Rules Europe- The Final Countdown Iron Maiden- Piece of Mind Metallica- ...And Justice For All My Chemical Romance- The Black Parade Iron Maiden- The Number of the Beast
Coming Home (with scenic detour)
Black Sabbath (Dio era)- Heaven and Hell Iron Maiden- Powerslave Iron Maiden- Dance of Death Iron Maiden- Brave New World Metallica- Ride The Lightning Metallica- Garage Inc. (disc one) Judas Priest- Stained Class Judas Priest- Angel of Retribution Powerwolf- Random playlist down the home stretch.
*Yeah, I don't waver much nowadays. It's also very hard to drive even remotely close to the speed limit listening to all these heavy metal classics  I got up to 90 mph quite a few times before noticing my speed.

Just What I Needed You Are The Girl Moving In Stereo Heartbeat City Hello Again They were outstanding still at the RRHOF induction ceremony a few years back and were a highlight of Live Aid, just an incredible sounding band. At Live Aid a lot of bands sounded like shit but there performance was like you put in a CD and pushed play. RIP Mr. Ocasek and also Benjamin Orr who died awhile back as well. Both vocalists are no longer with us, sad.

Yep, still listening to the Cars.
Just an impeccable performance, doesn't get more 80's than this on a hot Philadelphia night in 1985:

The Entertainer- Billy Joel Nice. Very underrated Billy Joel song. Lots of Saxon earlier today. Denim and Leather is such a good album. During the last hour or so I finally took a break from the Manowar/Saxon/NWOBHM kick for some classic Queen. Mostly their 80s/Highlander stuff.

And a few other Black Uhuru songs. I've stated my love for this band in Nobi's thread and I'll restate it here. With the exception of the Wailers(and it's close) I think they are the greatest reggae band ever.

Hmm...an interesting question. Not so easy to answer. I could have sworn I had listened to this band before and immediately dismissed them as growlers. But this song has no growling. Singer reminds me of Kelly Clarkson. Approved! But also confused.

That fine lady is no longer in the band, so they may have started growling after that.

Just listening to Kanye's new album... The Christian direction is pretty out there, but he makes it work. The guy could be insane but he is a genius at mixing and producing when he applies himself Follow God is an amazing wrap track...
Still my current favourite rap track is Logic:
Always partial to a bit of Shaolin style

Lots of Harry Chapin (plus some podcasts and Youtube) on my way to and from Providence.....
Verities & Balderdash (44 glorious minutes) The Bottom Line Encore Edition (97 more glorious minutes) The Gold Metal Collection (140! even more glorious minutes)
What a legend. Fwiw Harry rounds out my music Holy Trinity alongside Europe and Iron Maiden. Picking a favorite Harry song is impossible, and there are no wrong answers, but I will say There Only Was One Choice is his Bohemian Rhapsody.

I think it's alright but pretty forgettable - like basically everything he's done since MBDTF. Somewhere along the line he went from master album crafter to someone who's happy to put out clearly rushed, unfinished and abbreviated work.

Feet of Clay - Earl Sweatshirt
Yeah I think I’ll pass on any future releases, Earl is so much better than this ear grating instrumentals with drowned out vocals styles, especially when his lyrics have been fantastic in the past.

Sabaton with a smattering of HammerFall and the new Powerwolf song that just dropped the other day.
Not that I ever need a particular reason to listen to Sabaton, but I saw them (and HammerFall) in concert last night. Will post a show review with pics later today.

Still kicking myself for not including this on my 70's rock song list. After years of not having a high quality version on Youtube this beauty was just posted weeks ago. For older Canadians the main synth riff was the theme for the news show W5.

DragonForce and Lovebites
Buried deep in the basement of a Student Bar building is a music venue that hosted one stop of what must be the nerdiest heavy metal music to ever exist. Two nights prior, the same building hosted Damnation Festival, the most extreme metal festival in England, attracting fans of death metal, black metal, grindcore, hardcore, and everything in between. I was there, but only to see Opeth. It's possible that I was the only person to attend both Damnation Festival and DragonForce, as these are the polar opposites of the heavy metal spectrum. Lovebites were the main support. An all-female Japanese heavy metal band who dress in white. They were extremely efficient, personally setting up their own gear and still starting their set exactly 15 minutes after the opening act concluded, bang on schedule. I've never seen that before. Well done, ladies.
They were entertaining enough and can play very well, but their music was very generic. Their most redeeming quality was the guitar solos, which were well-crafted and well-executed. There were a few dual guitar solos to boot. However they had an air of artificiality about them. The singer declared "We are Lovebites, and we play heavy metal!" on two occasions. She was constantly throwing the devil horn hand symbol around, or getting people to fist bump. It reeked of someone cosplaying as a heavy metal frontwoman rather than actually being one. But perhaps that's harsh. They are a young band, and probably need some more time to find their footing on stage. Besides the forced antics of the vocalist, they all looked pretty comfortable on stage and were clearly enjoying themselves. Decent enough warmup act, and very appropriate as a support for DragonForce, but pretty forgettable. It's very rare that the sound system plays nothing but the most obvious, popular metal bands (Maiden, Metallica, Priest) during intermissions, but DragonForce clearly had a word with the sound guys, so I enjoyed obscure power metal songs as I stood in the crowd waiting for the main event. Iced Earth, Celesty and Theocracy were played, all bands I love. A couple of songs I didn't recognise at all. There was also Hammerfall's Hearts on Fire, a song Baker would have experienced in person the night before. DragonForce have been one of my absolute favourite bands for over a decade but I've fallen slightly out of favour in recent months. They are known as a deliberately OTT band with a liking for video games and nerdy things, but with their latest album release, subtly titled Extreme Power Metal, they've gone all-in on the silliness and video game love. For some reason I was resistant to this idea, perhaps thinking they should be more serious, but within minutes of them hitting the stage I realised how foolish I was. Their stage set and music set was a heavy metal nerd's wet dream. That is an image I pulled from Google: what I saw was a smaller scale version of that. A screen in the background which displayed music videos, album covers, or video games in action. The two arcade machines flanking the stage acted as a high platform for band members, and also had screens on their own, usually showing sped up retro beat-em ups in action. Here are some actual pictures from the show.
DragonForce somehow earnt a reputation as a terrible live band, which I believe came from their Inhuman Rampage tour in 2006/7. I wasn't going to metal shows at the time, so I can neither confirm nor deny, but I've seen them seven times, starting in 2008, and they have been flawless every time, which is no easy feat if you've ever heard any of their songs. They blasted through blistering track after blistering track. Most of their setlist came from their new album, which is normally something I dislike because I don't tend to like the newest album, at least not so soon after its release. While this was certainly true here, the show was so damn fun that I couldn't help but enjoy every song. They brought out all the stops: smoke machines, confetti, indoor fireworks, light displays, and the vocalist had what can best be described as a smoke bazooka. The highlights of the show were when they dived deep into their repertoire and busted out some tracks from their first two albums: Fan favourites Fury of the Storm and Valley of the Damned, as well as deep cut Black Fire. I also really enjoyed a couple of their new songs, specifically The Last Dragonborn (based on the video game Skyrim) and Razorblade Metaldown (told you they were silly).
The most memorable moment was when vocalist Marc Hudson donned a guitar and flawlessly played a couple of video game tracks, after humbly admitting that he "completely fucked it up" at the previous night's show. One of the tracks he played was the boss music from my all-time favourite video game, Final Fantasy VII. Of course I had to take a picture of that even though they didn't come out so great. What a moment.
After over an hour of unlimited fun nerd metal, it was time for the encore. Marc returned to the stage alone, and encouraged the crowd to scream as loudly as possible so that the other band members would come out. Things didn't go entirely to Marc's plan, as guitarists Sam Totman and Herman Li walked on stage before we had a chance to roar, prompting the following exchange.
Marc [to Herman]: "You're not supposed to be here yet!" Herman: "Sam already came out so I thought I had to as well." Marc looks accusingly at Sam. Sam says something, but we can't hear him. He gestures at his guitar. Marc: "You were tuning your guitar? You don't need to tune your guitar!" Everyone laughs. Marc: "It doesn't matter if you tune or not because you miss so many notes!" Everyone laughs harder.
The encore featured two songs. The first was a cover of Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On. I thought their previous novelty cover, Ring of Fire, was garbage, so I disagreed with the idea of them having another go. However, the crowd begged for it, and it worked incredibly well live. They unashamedly made Titanic's anthem into a goofy, way over-the-top power metal song. For anyone who knows DragonForce at all, they had to finish with their Final Countdown, the song that must be played, Through The Fire And The Flames. Thus ended a truly brilliant experience and one of the best shows I've ever attended.
Before I go, one last thing. The entire show was streamed. Herman Li had a camera attached to himself the entire show, directing low quality footage of the audience to his personal Twitch channel. DragonForce truly are heavy metal pioneers.
That's all I have to say. Baker, the ball's in your court. Can you top this?
