Elon Musk announced that he will be launching XVideos, his youtube killer.  After rebranding Twitter to X this morning, his next plan is to get the video site up and running.  

So who here is excited to start using XVideos, a place that will surely be home to uninhibited, naked speech.

For those out of the loop Musk has been promoting XVideos without realizing that is the name of the largest porn site in the world.  Now he rebranded Twitter, when you put X in your search box, for many it will suggest the Xvideos, which people believe is the new Musk site.  Creating hilarious chaos.  Also Musk did not even check to see if he could call his site XVideos, since WGCZ filed for the trademark in 2012.  

In response to learning all of this, he banned the XVideos official Twitter account, and recreated an official one that is X controlled. 

Another thing that was not considered is searching for a letter is not likely to return you the results you want, so X is basically unsearchable now.  Try it and X the movie and band come up, followed by wiki on the latin letter.  X Games and Fast X also come up.  What does not is the X website.  And add a secondary term, you will get noise as search engines are not made to search for a single letter.

The porn thing is amusing but I read an article talking about his long term obsession with X as a brand and I thought that was even funnier. He's been trying to make it a thing since his first company in 1999 despite it being one of the most ubiquitous and unimaginative things possible. It would be like me pitching a Stussy S at work as if it was the height of graphic sophistication.

What is hilarious is he always has been obsessed with it, but Meta owns the rights to the X logo, and Microsoft to X used in social media spaces. He like did jack shit about setting up the framework to even make it happen. Both are likely to sue him for trademark violations.

Also the move damaged the value of the brand as not many company ad teams are interested in why they should advertise on a site they never heard of at top dollar. And having to explain to them the name change will be met with lower ad offers.

X is an unknown quantity, seems like a strange pitch for a brand.

For a fake coder it is a variable which is cool as it can be anything.

Xcash, xmoney and xbank are all also owned trademarks.  Musk thinks he is super creative but the X brand is gonna cost him more than he has.

In his defence, in 1999 " X " was cool. Generation X, DX, PSX, X-Files, DMX, Xzibit, Static X, X-Games.. any time extreme could be spelt without the E, you took it.. if you wanted to make something cool by late 90s standards, you tacked an X on it.

Which is what makes him an idiot, everything possible was already branded X. He is trying to rebrand shit and pretend it is original.

Also now twitter is rebranded, from now on, Musk will have created the site.

His mission is to kill the propaganda arm of the progressive liberal elite.

So in a way he did. Left split between Post, Instagram/Threads, Substack/Notes, Tumblr and private discords. Many of us are still there watching it burn though, but using it less and less. I moved to discords mainly but if threads gets a desktop client I will use it as a main hub for Threads, Bluesky and Mastidan.

For the left though, splitting like this hurts us in 2024. With a united left we are looking at a mandate, taking the presidency, Senate by 1 or 2 and House by at least 20. But with people all over, hard to organize. Doubly so when people also are leaving reddit, which could have been a backup.

So in that way he may get a minor win in helping to block a mandate. And of course dems walk right into this and do not seem to care since most are sure we are sweeping the election easily with the GOP running on slavery taught job skills, a national abortion ban, trans hate, getting rid of social security and the top GOP member looking at spending the year before the election in court defending himself against serious legal charges. So dems not really thinking about needing a united front since they assume got this in the bag, but splitting your base is exactly how you give up an advantage like the one the GOP and Trump are giving us now.

For some reason the only time programmers use x as a variable is when you're working with a mathematical formula that traditionally has an x in it (eg mx+b). Virtually every other letter is frequently used as a single-letter variable, but not x.

I’ve not found any real evidence that Elon is saying anything about xvideos. Memes suggesting he might, but nothing to it.

Still would be funny.

They have WeChat wepay etc. He could have gone with x-twitter or Twitter without destroying the recognition of the brand name which is the most valuable part of the platform... But hey... I'm not a billionaire, not yet anyway.

Only time I seen X in statistical programming is in mathematical functions that force classical format.  Otherwise we replace x with the proper symbol spelled out.  So mx would be b1*vectorname.  Generally we try to name the matrices or vectors, and call them explicitly.  Just good coding practice to explicitly name your variables, and call them directly.  Short cuts lead to confusing ass code.  And double assigning variables.

i was just as stupid.  Another faux programming thing since we use i for iteration counts.

The problem with Musk building WeChat in America is that sort of site is not legal here under antitrust laws.  We would force him to break it up and sell parts of it off.

Hilarious, X.com blocked in Indonesia under anti-porn laws. Unless Twitter renames to Twitter for that region they will block the site as well.

Musk went for the shakedown today saying anyone that wants to have their company's verified needs to start paying $1000 a month or deal with impersonation moving forward. He claims he can no longer freely verify companies moving forward without a monthly fee as it is too expensive to determine which account is official, the long standard account with a verification tag, or the dozens of new accounts being made daily. Companies that do no pay, can sort this out themselves he says basically.

Unfortunately for Musk, his statements means he is willing to yield 230 protections and allow direct lawsuits should this go to court since he appears to be dropping minimal enforcement if you do not pay him.

This change comes as many small companies claim he takes their cash and does not do shit in return, and many large companies are growing tired of having to deal with his bullshit on a weekly basis and have someone dedicated to dealing only with his drama.

Bad week for Musk, California AG looking into whether or not Tesla's self-driving claims and phantom breaking problems are criminal in nature.  He could eat a ban in the largest US electric car market.  Or massive fines which he cannot simply ignore. 

Believed the exact decision will be to ban cars using Tesla Vision and Tesla assisted driving from the state by making them no longer road legal.  He can still sell electric cars, but without any assisted driving features, and will have to disable it for all drivers in the state for free.  Which will also open all of the owners up to suing him directly for false advertising.

BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis will combine together to create a new EV charging network.  They are sick of the Musk drama and want to cut him out.  Their stations will offer his ports, but he will lose control of the network.  They are working on getting Ford and Volvo to sign on.  These charging ports will also not require an app to use.  Should Musk not wish to buy in, in the future they could cut out Tesla as this is a private initiative and will be run as close to non-profit as it can be.  Goal is to sell EVs not make profit from these stations themselves beyond what it will cost for upkeep and management.

After the US is fairly setup, they will move into Canada.

Plan is to install these outside of fast food places, stores, major job locations, schools, hospitals, etc.  

Sure he's suffering from delusions of grandeur in a lot of ways, but in regards to EV - he has pushed the conversation forward.

And that's arguably going to be his legacy upon looking back on this first generation of EVs.

He's a pioneer, albeit a crazy one. And that's all he needs to be, the nutcase who said something was possible. The next guy who comes along will take it a step further and so on and so on.

He's still the richest person in the world, he could fail 10 times over and still be one of the richest people on the planet.

EVs definitely wouldn't be where they are without Tesla. The Supercharger Network is a Tesla vehicle's killer feature. Having another option is only good as it spurs competition and increases availability.

In news that should surprise no one, X is now seeking to replace many of the engineers and designers they fired as Musk fired the very people he needed to expand Twitter into X.

Curious how many take him up on the offer given how he handled the original employees and the fact they will need to move to San Fran, and be prepared to move when he is evicted and leaves San Fran.

This is getting hilarious. Elon tried to remove the Twitter logo from the building, but after removing the R he was stopped by SFPD and told he lacked the permits. Now he put a giant X on the building and SFPD already confirmed they will be taking action tomorrow, which will likely be a fine and removing, themselves if need to.

Kind if big news tonight. Punk declared that X is his symbol clearly showing that he is an Elon Musk guy.
