With the Opening Ceremony just a couple days away on the River Seine, and Olympic competition beginning tomorrow with men's soccer, I thought now would be a great time to set up a thread for the Olympics.  The first to have spectators, since Rio in 2016.

Paris joins London (and soon in 2028 by Los Angeles) as the only cities to host three different Olympic Games.  But it has been a full century since Paris hosted the games.

Some of the big stories going into Paris include the U.S. Basketball team attempting to win gold, led by flag bearer LeBron James, and first time Olympian, Stephen Curry.  But in their way, are a full throng of strong medal contenders.  Including teams from Canada, Serbia, Australia, and even the host team from France.

Simone Biles returns to the games, looking to further cement her place as the greatest gymnast in history.

Katie Ledecky is back, as she hunts for more gold, and more records.  But it's not gonna be easy this year.  As she will have to go against, among others, Canadian Summer McIntosh, who broke Ledecky's World Record in the women's 400M individual medley.

ShaCarri Richardson was denied a spot in Tokyo, due to a failed drug test.  This time, she looks for redemption, and a gold medal, as the favorite in the women's 100M.

Plus, a new event has been added to the Olympic program.  Some 40 years after being birthed in the streets, Break Dancing has finally hit the big time, with a spot in the games.

Our Canadian team looks to be pretty strong this year.  In addition to the men's and women's basketball teams, and McIntosh in the pool, we also have our women's soccer team, trying to win back-to-back golds.  Also, defending men's 200M champion, Andre deGrasse is back on the track.  As well as Maggie McNeil, and Canada's most decorated Olympian, Penny Oleksiak look to add some more medals in swimming.

Anyone here excited for the games?  Anyone else we should be looking out for?

Last time I paid a lot of attention to the Summer Olympics or really any Olympics, it was 1996 when they had the bomb in Atlanta. Yes, I'm that old.

Terrible performance by the Matildas this morning, 0-3 puts a big dent in their chances of even getting out of the group. I don’t really care for opening/closing ceremonies so I stopped watching those.

Peacock and I are having a real love hate relationship this morning. My ADHD loves flipping between sports, but I hate that instead of just focusing on a table tennis, ping pong or fencing match they’re showing me four at a time so I can’t really see much of any of them.

Found GoldZone and now I’m in my happy place zipping sport to sport for medal finishes.

The Emma Hayes era is going to take the US women's side to new heights, just a diff feel. No forced Megan Rapinoe stuff at all too. Ride the young core. Mallory Pugh Swanson, Trinity Rodman and Sophie Smith.

Canada was on the brink of death in soccer.

Tied 1-1 against France, with only a minute left of the 13 minutes of stoppage time, we got the winning goal.

Beat Columbia, and we might have a chance.

Also, Canada won its first ever medal (a bronze) in fencing!

Women's football has been getting more and more professional and polished in recent times but this was a real throwback to the days of calamitous entertainment. :lol:

Another example of exactly what I am saying about Gustavsson though, he is hopeless and the Maltidas achieve despite him. He finally brought our one striker at the tournament off the bench and they score 4 goals in 30 minutes - it's not fucking rocket science.

Think you guys have to win to get in but fortunately, I think US probably rests some guys up this next game. Japan and Brazil are both great so not much of a difference in winning the group or not TBH. 

Probably need Zambia to come on strong vs Germany though, IDK about that. 

Chase Budinger winning a gold medal in Volleyball after having a 9 year/18+ million dollar NBA career is some fascinating stuff and really is a reminder how super DUPER athletic you have to be to make it into these major sports.

Fun fact: Budinger won Co-MVP with Kevin Durant at the McDonalds All American game. 

Double gold today for the Canadians.

Summer McIntosh dominated the 400M IM, as expected.

What wasn't expected, was that we won our first ever gold in Judo.

Basketball should be double the medal count, that's how big it is. Both men's and women's TBH. There's a reason LeBron James was the rep of Team USA for these games on the opening ceremony. 

WWE also fucked US by releasing controversial ex winner Gable Steveson after qualifiers/prelims for USA and also signed Mensah-Stock who won gold in 2020(She should be a killer in NXT though). US had Amateur wrestling on lock down for sure.

Sports like that are the whole point of the Olympics. We all see enough basketball and football all year round in the myriad of competitions those sports have. I like this niche stuff.
