People should be proud to get any medal at an olympic game, you have to be elite at your craft to even qualify much less rank for one of those. But there's just bigger traction & buzz when you win at Gymnastics or Swimming or Track & Field for individual sports vs some of the lesser known sports.

My argument is more so a counter to discrediting the US overall medal count when it means a lot to get a top 3 finish regardless. How many of the major sports did Japan win a gold on for example? Would any one of their gold captures be as big/publicized as US winning men's basketball?

To be fair, basketball has become pretty popular globally and there are 60 NBA players playing on non USA teams. I would assume that it’s the second most important sport there after soccer.

Rowing has become my comfort sport to watch in the Olympics. I find it to be quite peaceful. The scenery is beautiful and I’m impressed with the team symmetry.

Speaking of important sports, Simone Biles getting gold still at her age for women's gymnastics. The definition of black excellence, she might have surpassed Serena Williams as far as 21st century domination from a women talent IMHO.

Coco Gauff got a minor setback today with the upset though, she is the next flagbearer here. It's Iga's world now though. .

Agree with this take as a viewer for certain. I have yet to watch basketball, but I’ve watched rugby, judo, and table tennis come with plenty of sports drama.

I think my biggest caveat to most of this as a US fan is that being this good at so many of the sports really comes down to money. Basketball, soccer, and track and field are the games that you have historically in the US been able to excel at without a sizable financial contribution from parents (I’m sure there are others that you can breakthrough if you’re good and there’s enough external motivation to try, maybe swimming?). Or you need a government that so prioritizes winning Olympic and international competitions that they pluck kids out early for aptitude and sponsor their training forsaking all other things.

Well we played for a draw and went 5 at the back which is fine for limiting damage but you need a striker who can hold the ball up and we were playing a winger there.

Being eliminated is the best thing going forward, time to get a new coach, freshen up the team a bit and build towards the Asian Cup. 

Great hit by Albert for the second goal though.

Going from a Russian asylum to maybe winning gold is pretty impressive for them. Griner also became a boydad so it's been a really good 2024 for them after a really, really shitty 2022/part of 2023.
