Where is all this Last Jedi hate coming from? I had no idea people were mad about it. What was wrong with it? I don't get that either. I enjoyed it. And I imagine the majority of people that went to it enjoyed it. The only ones that didn't, was just a minor cluster that just made a lot of noise.

As far as Star Was go, TLJ was probably the weakest aside from Solo and Phantom Menace.
Definitely did Luke wrong, such a waste.

6 Underground on Netflix
Michael Bay's Action/Thriller/Ryan Reynolds-wise-crack-a-ton. After witnessing the horrors of an evil middle eastern dictator, a billionaire puts together a team to dethrone the king, and install his democratic loving brother. It's shot in about every famous piece of European real estate you could think of, and is about as deep and meaningful as Michael Bay gets. It's OK sorts of fun. But looks great.

The Irishman
Don’t buy into the hype. Absolute boring film. I actually long films, the 3 and half hour run time didn’t bother me, the fact that it’s beyond boring and at no point does it even half make an attempt to be entertaining is what killed the duration.
The performances are good, but you’ve seen this cast play the same characters hundreds of time already. Essentially the movie is then sitting around a table just talking shit. The majority of dialogue doesn’t move the storyline along, or really have anything to do with the events the movie is portraying. The female cast is completely wasted as well. Save your time.

I didn't go see it. Not after the way Last Jedi shit on the franchise. As someone who watched Last Jedi and thought it was fine (admittedly not knowing any of the hatred it had going in) I really don't get this sentiment. Episodes I - III shit so hard on what the original three films built, that I don't get why anyone who remained invested would care if follow-up movies were bad or not. Wow...where do we start? As stand alone movies. Episode 7 and 8 aren't terrible at all. Well shot, very well produced, fairly well acted and tightly directed. The writing sucks for both, but Star Wars has never been known for great writing. As STAR WARS movies however, both films are the drizzling shits. J.J. Abrams directed the Force Awakens as a love letter to the original Star Wars. On it's own that's perfectly fine, but it doesn't advance the story of Star Wars in any way. Matter of fact it actually UNDOES a good chunk of Return of the Jedi. We never see the new Jedi Academy, never see The New Republic in any meaningful way, and Han is back to being a smuggler for no apparent reason. All because J.J. Abrams lacks a single creative bone in his body. The man can direct for certain but as a writer he blows chunks. Last Jedi is even worse. It takes every possible moment to wipe it's ass with the original trilogy. From the absolute butchering of Luke Skywalker, the Mary Poppins scene with Leia. Chewie following Rey around like he's an accessory to the Millenium Falcon (he was Han's PARTNER, it's CHEWIE'S DAMN SHIP) etc...etc... Just as bad, it fails to progress most of the characters introduced in The Force Awakens, Finn and Poe are particularly wasted in this movie. All to focus more attention on two of the worst characters ever introduced in a Star Wars film, Rose Tico and Admiral Holdo. And then there is Rey. The single least interesting Mary Sue of a main protagonist ever introduced in a movie. Everything comes easy for her. Flying the Millenium Falcon? No sweat. Defeating a trained Sith with no training of her own? No problem for Rey. DEFATING A JEDI MASTER WITH NO REAL TRAINING? Once again, no problem for Rey. All while being marginally acted by the plank of wood knowns as Daisy Ridley. I can't really rate Rise of Skywalker because I haven't seen it. But I heard Emperor Palpatine comes back, which I hate with the fury of a 1000 suns. I guess Abrams had to do SOMETHING to save his trilogy since Rian Johnson took a bulldozer to just about every plot point Abrams had set up with The Force Awakens. But Palpatine's return once again makes Return of the Jedi completely pointless. I could honestly write entire books on the subject, the above points are just the beginning of why the Disney Star Wars films blow chunks as a continuation of the Star Wars story.

The Irishman Incredible film, so many films this year have came out with an unjustified run time yet this 3hr 30 min was entertaining from start to finish with incredible performances by De Niro and Pacino. Highly recommended if you’re into crime films. 10/10 The Irishman Don’t buy into the hype. Absolute boring film. Sanshiro Sugata AKA Judo Saga Directed by Akira Kurosawa
Kurosawa is easily my favorite director, but his catalog of movies is vast. There are quite a few I still haven't seen, and this was one of them. I figured I should give it a shot considering it is the first film he ever directed. Whenever Kurosawa comes up, people usually obsess over Toshiro Mifune. Mifune this and Mifune that. They say Kurosawa "found his style" thanks to Mifune. I take huge objection to this. Mifune is a legend, but Kurosawa was by no means reliant on him. He just knew he was an amazing actor and so he kept casting him, but Kurosawa can work with many different leads and put out amazing films and this movie is a good example of that. Sanshiro Sugata is played by Susumu "Never Heard Of Him" Fujita. Though I ought to have heard of him, because he played this role without a misstep and is apparently in hundreds of movies.
The tale begins as Sanshiro, an aspiring martial artist, searches for a jujitsu master to train him. He inadvertently finds himself following a group of bullies at some lame dojo to go beat up an old man. But that old man turns out to be the JUDO MASTER and throws all five of them in a lake. Sanshiro loves fighting and is amazed. He then follows this master on his journey to become a skilled fighter, but what he finds is far more meaningful. A spiritual awakening. He also becomes the champion of judo though. But there are those who do not take too kindly to the rise of judo, and a dastardly opponent rises up to challenge him. A jujitsu master so evil that the raging wind is literally queued to coincide with his voice throughout the film as he is hellbent on murdering Sanshiro to prove his superiority.
This was a pretty fun movie with some beautiful shots and a strong, albeit straightforward, message. Based on a true story of the actual first champion of judo, you can tell it is a heartwarming love letter to a beloved piece of Japanese history. Even in his first film, Kurosawa shows strong directorial abilities that define the film and structure it well. Unfortunately, 17 minutes of the film was censored out and lost to time but it didn't disrupt the flow much. I wouldn't even have known it was missing if I didn't read about it before-hand. In any case, this movie was pretty cool and will leave a lasting impression in my thoughts for some time.

Went to see Black Christmas last night. My wife and I tend to see horror movies for Christmas. I'm a fan of the 2006 version. This one explored the line between modern feminist messaging and misandry. According to the previews this is going to be a thing in movies. Invisible Man and one other one that was previewed was all about false accusations.

I added it to "the list" following the MCU countdown. Guess the quote and poster made me think cannibalism had a major plotpoint to the movie, i.e. I thought Evans' character with the axe was just the villain eating people in a train... LOL. The climax with Wilford gave me Matrix vibes with that white room. It's one of those one and done good films for sure, just not great and worth a rewatch. Not many films are IMO, so that doesn't take from it. Kinda interesting to see Evans not as Cap and yet he still faces a villain dealing with balance.

FX's a Christmas Carol: Is there a bad version of this story? Seems like every version I've ever seen qualifies as good. So, it was good, fantastic cast, great cinematography, solid performances all around. Doesn't set itself apart, but as worth a watch as any.
Mary Poppins Returns: Not as good as the original, but one of the best decades late sequels with new casts. Lamp lighters aren't nearly as entertaining as the chimney sweeps, but an overall enjoyable experience. Some really well done segments.

By that logic, Bumblebee is now a Christmas movie because Fox played it multiple times on Christmas day.
It's a weaksauce argument for a silly meme.

The edgelord stance is that Die Hard isn't now the certified Christmas classic it has long since become (long before the concept of memes existed). Not the first thing that wasn't intended to be one specific thing, but content and interpretation made it so none the less.

It only gets in as this 'well...if you think about it' which opens up the door for shit like Eyes Wide Shut into the conversation.
And memes have been around in one form or fashion for generations now well before Die Hard.

Are you going to argue it's not a Christmas movie either? The only weaksauce arguments are the ones denying Die Hard it's rightful status as a Christmas classic. Does Bumblebee get played during the Christmas holiday EVERY YEAR?? Die Hard certainly does. Eyes Wide Shut is your weakest argument yet. Nobody gives a damn about Eyes Wide Shut around Christmas time or any season for that matter.

34th st came out in May and no because the producers were clearly trying to experiment with the release date. Die Hard was following the trends Spielberg set in the 70s, it being set around Christmas time was merely a superficial choice.
Like Lethal Weapon, like Rocky 4, like Eyes Wide Shut - not a real Christmas movie.

And that folks is the hill that I die on.
Finally got around to watching Star Wars The Last Jedi. I was actually really looking forward to this movie when it came out. The Force Awakens did enough for me to get interested and while I found Rogue One to be a miss step, I was curious to see what Rian Johnson would do with the script. I really enjoyed Brick, Looper and his work on Breaking Bad so I thought he'd do a great job of fleshing out all the characters and taking us on this journey with the characters. Then the initial press came out and I was more interested in the Red Letter Media review than the actual movie.
I've since watched Knives Out and with the latest Star Wars movie hitting theatres, I was interested to check The Last Jedi out just to experience the movie. Starting off, I didn't mind the opening scene. We're thrown straight into the action between the rebels and the first order and it's a nice visual feast. My only complaint is that it felt like I was watching a Guardians of the Galaxy movie with Poe's strategy of prank calling the first order's commander to distract their artillary. Even in Guardians, I think they can over-do it with the comedy, so to see a bigger franchise like Star Wars try and ape it just felt tacky.
Cut to the Luke scene and like a few Jedi masters before him, Luke had become a kook. I didn't actually mind the choice, but hated how it was used to draw Rey closer to Kylo. I got some real Twilight vibes out of that whole relationship and if the end goal was for Luke to push Rey away so she could be closer to Kylo I think they could have developed it better. Giving them this weird Harry Potter-Voldemort esque telepathy just felt like a cheap way to get them together.
Then the rest of the movie felt like a game of cat and mouse. Everytime the rebels were about to get caught, somebody would make a heroic sacrifice and extend the run-time of the movie. The only real set-up was for the Kylo-Rey rematch after they teased and didn't deliver on a babyface/heel turn.
I thought the character work was pretty sparse. I like the action sequences, especially to begin and end a movie, but I need to be charmed by these characters. The Force Awakens did a pretty good job in that regard giving a lot of the new cast like Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo interesting archtypes that could be fleshed out later on. The only character that really gets explored here is Poe and even then it's just to knock him down three pegs. It was almost like the film shamed the audience for finding Poe cool in the first movie. Oh you enjoyed this cocky pilot? Well, he's a hot head who isn't afraid to wipe out an entire fleet and make life difficult for the rebellion. He doesn't listen to authority and thinks he's better than everyone else even though he's a buffoon.
I actually thought Rose would stand a chance when they introduced her as this awkward character, but then they never got around to fleshing out her personality. She just seemed to come off as a stand-in for Rey who had already friend-zoned Finn in the first movie. She just seemed to be there for the ride, only coming into play when they needed to give Finn some plot armour.
I don't know, it just seemed like a really drawn chase movie where the protaganists barely limp out of the movie to live and fight another day. I wasn't annoyed by the movie, just unsatisfied.
