I love Heat , it was a hard choice between this and another movie for my #1 - ultimately I went with the other movie because I like De Niro's role and performance a tad bit more but it's really splitting hairs because they are both wonderful masterpieces that deserve to be honored.
The best ensemble cast in history , two amazing leads and the ultimate crime/action movie. Michael Mann treated this movie with such detail that it really has no choice but to be elevated above the rest of the genre. I'm not going to get into the whole antagonist/protagonist thing again but for my money both De Niro and Pacino despite being on opposite sides of the law give the audience choices and moments.
Happy it made #4 , wish it could have gotten higher but I get it - De Niro's top five is as stacked as anyone's in history.

Saw it back in April. Despite it's 3 hr run time it really doesn't feel long. It was my #1. Granted I haven't seen a lot of his top picks but obviously more are being added to the list. I do have a notepad doc that I keep notes in (my weekly comic list, episode numbers for shows, etc.) so when I say list it's legit lmao.
But unlike last time it showed I can actually participate beyond the Gaffigan clip. Top to bottom I loved this so much. If we did a top 20 I'm sure it would fit in there somewhere.
The shootout and diner scene are personal contenders for best scenes in any movie. If nothing else I'm kinda gutted we're already getting Heat. Perhaps the next few picks are just that good...

Heat was my #8 movie. It's definitely one of the great heist movies of all time and would have scored higher except for the incredible depth Robert De Niro has in his movies.

If you ever get a chance , look into the making of that shootout scene. It’s no wonder why it’s one of the greatest scenes ever when you see the amount of work Mann put into making it feel authentic.

I used to think Heat was overrated and bloated but every time I rewatch it I love it even more, it's really a work of art action film. I'm due for a rewatch sometime this summer.

That quote! Last time I watched it I noticed it was around 30 seconds it took him to walk away from his girl in the end when Pacino was closing in on him. I didn't time it with a stop watch but I bet it was 30 seconds exactly, or maybe even 31 seconds and that was why he didn't get away. Fucking brilliant. Now I want to watch this tonight! We should have a live Heat viewing chat on pw

I used to think Heat was overrated and bloated but every time I rewatch it I love it even more, it's really a work of art action film. I'm due for a rewatch sometime this summer. It is bloated. I feel like there had to have been a way to cut 15-30 minutes, at least, without losing anything. And, in fact, streamlining a bit probably makes the whole thing more effective. Act II really drags in parts.

You fucking monster. Hate was way too strong a word, my bad. More like meh or bored. Ultimately, I keep coming down on the side of loving it though. Act III is dope. Aside from the bloat, my biggest gripe is how unrealistic the shootout action scenes are. But then again, it was the 90s. So it's easier to give those bottomless magazines and bullet proof cars a pass.

Yes they could have have 15 minutes and some of the Waingrow stuff - but that also played into the Pacino character and gave the audience an actual villain to hate and led to the most satisfying death of the movie. Also led to the demise of Neil - so really he was an important part of the movie. Fucking scum.

Not too mention the fact that actual police use that video to train their departments and men on how to handle a situation like that. They also trained with military personell to handle the guns. Give it a pass , psh.

I think Van Zant and Waingro are the ultimate villains of the movie. Pacino and De Niro are the same person on different sides of the law. Yes one has obvious higher moral standards but you're never really meant to root against Neil - quite the opposite really. You want both guys to win though you know that's ultimately impossible and that's a conundrum you face throughout the movie when picking sides.

I can't believe neither PB nor 🤯 have seen Heat still. I can't believe there's anyone that hasn't seen it still. To garner interest in people watching it, I am going to provide a quick summary:

I take exception to you calling Hanna an idiot cop , infact it’s implied and maybe even outrighted stated a few times that’s he’s the best at his job.
Also the idiot with his wife comment only reinforces that because it proves that he’s anything but a bumbling idiot - he lets these cases consume his life until he gets his guy ... and it’s cost him multiple marriages including the current one.
The scene after the dinner party encapsulates a bunch of that.

Yeah, I figured Town was a remake of HEAT. But maybe it's because of the aging well thing, but I still rank it the way I think. Town > Heat.

Actually in terms of tactics and choreography the shootout in Heat is one of the most realistic ever put on film.

Fun Fact: Heat placed #4 on both this and the Pacino list.
And I'm gonna have to slide The Town into my ongoing must watch list. Arguably better than Heat? Also made it pretty high on both Avengers/Damon countdowns, so I gots no choice here.

Give it a pass , psh. This has to be a joke. It's fun, but in no way realistic. And no competent law enforcement agency is using Heat's climactic shootout as training material, unless it's as an example of what not to do or expect. Wait, who did you think the villain was? Pacino or De Niro? Neither. I think Van Zant and Waingro are the ultimate villains of the movie. Pacino and De Niro are the same person on different sides of the law. You want both guys to win though you know that's ultimately impossible and that's a conundrum you face throughout the movie when picking sides. Ok, whew. That's how I felt and what I loved most about Heat. Rooting for both guys, knowing only one could "win", and feeling conflicted all the way up to and even after their final confrontation in the end. For that dynamic, I definitely give Heat all the positive marks.
