This a top 10 DeNiro MOVIE list, not a top 10 DeNiro performance list. So get off my nuts already. Woah cowboy, I was just curious about your selection methods. I didn't want to get any nuts involved. Most people seem to vote as if it was a performance list because UT always says some shit like "while this is a good movie, I don't really see it as a DE NIRO movie" or the like. I guess you just don't do that. This is what I am trying to get to the bottom of.

I have a moving scale - it usually depends on the prominence of the role too not just the performance.
Having said that I do think it’s perfectly normal to acknowledge a performance in a movie is better while liking other movies better overall. Like for my money Raging Bull might be his best performance but it only make #5 on my list because I watch other movies a ton more.

Raging Bull was blah. Taxi Driver didn’t age well.
It has to be Goodfellas.

I have mixed opinions on Taxi Driver but to say it doesn’t hold up is a blatant lie or misuse of the term.

I have mixed opinions on Taxi Driver but to say it doesn’t hold up is a blatant lie or misuse of the term. Or it’s an opinion? The presentation of the film didn’t age well for me. The storyline is good enough, but I guess like any old movie, the view isn’t nice. Maybe it’s supposed to be like that but I didn’t like the way it looked. There’s also so many boring parts in the movie that you kind of start wondering when it will finally end.

I don’t really disagree with the parts that drag , that just means it drags though not that it doesn’t hold up because of age. The themes of the movie hold up too well - which is why it’s not really an opinion. The movie is just as pertinent today as it was in the 70s and that’s pretty scary.

The city looks completely different now, but for the time period Taxi Driver was a pretty accurate representation of what NYC looked like.

Goodfellas is IMO in the argument for greatest movie of all time , just from a production , writing , acting , the cinematography and total package I don't know of many that really match it. It ultimately became my #1 over Heat by a hair because I do think that Jimmy Conway is my favorite DeNiro character so I gave it a slight bump.

Taxi Driver is a worthy #1 for this, The Kid - it's kinda fitting, like how Scarface was Al's #1, and Taxi Driver is a lot like Scarface... just good.

I'm with thereallt that this is a bit of an upset , I figured Taxi Driver would finish high but I didn't think it would be #1 , especially after watching it. I'm not going to sit here and shit on it and say it's a bad movie because that would be false but I do think that it has some pacing issues and tends to drag in spots that make it seem longer than it is , I also get that's the tone they were going for so I can't really fault the movie - it just made it less enjoyable for me and also makes it seem unlikely that I'll ever go back to it. The highs of the movie are there too. DeNiro's performance , Jodie Fosters debut performance (incredible) and the themes of loneliness and obsession that are still around today. All really good stuff that deserves to be praised. Still though it landed at #7 for me. And thats solely because of the top nominated performances and how insightful it was. Perhaps I should have at least bumped it up to 5 or 6.

So... Who's better: De Niro or Pacino? That’s tough. DeNiro has Goodfellas , they both have Heat and The Godfather’s. I don’t know exactly what Pacino has in terms of powerhouse performances that match Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. DeNiro also deserves credit for continuing to go back to Scorsese. I’d probably give the edge to DeNiro off the top of my head but Pacino makes more campy rewatchsble flicks like Scarface and Any Given Sunday.

No way, DeNiro is easily the better actor. Pacino could NEVER pull off a performance like Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull or Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver. Pacino is overwhelmingly charismatic, but more often than not, the characters he plays are just extensions of himself. Anyway , Taxi Driver was my #4 movie. It's an absolutely fascinating character study of a man on the fringe of his sanity trying to make sense of an even crazier world. When you see just how shitty NY is through Travis Bickle's eyes, you start to wonder if HE'S the sane one and if EVERYONE ELSE is crazy. 1.Goodfellas 2.Godfather Part II 3.Raging Bull 4.Taxi Driver 5.Casino 6.The Deer Hunter 7.Mean Streets 8.Heat 9.Midnight Run 10.Analyze This.

My list for this was hilariously bad, especially realizing how many holes I have in my viewing as far as De Niro's trademark roles/movies go:
1 .) Taxi Driver 2 .) The Godfather: Part II 3 .) Meet the Parents 4 .) Goodfellas 5 .) Heat 6 .) The Intern 7 .) Analyze This 8 .) Dirty Grandpa 9 .) Silver Linings Playbook 10 .) Jackie Brown

De Niro is the better actor due to his versatility, but I like Pacino's movies a lot more. There's something about De Niro films that don't click with me. Godfather Part II, meh (I know it's a Pacino film too). Goodfellas, meh. Give me Donnie Brasco and Scarface and Carlito's Way over any De Niro gangster flick. Taxi Driver, meh. I'll take Scent of a Woman over it ten times out of ten.
I feel like there's a De Niro film for me out there. Besides Jackie Brown, which I love because of it's Tarantino-ness more than anything else. Maybe that film is Casino.

1. Raging Bull 2. Taxi Driver 3. Goodfellas 4. The Deer Hunter 5. Casino 6. Cape Fear 7. Heat 8. Bang The Drum Slowly 9. The Untouchables 10. Mean Streets
A fitting top 2, what more can be said about Goodfellas? It's always a lock for my top 5.
Taxi Driver just captures how slummy 1970's New York really was and almost makes you not want to enjoy the movie. De Niro's most quoted role and a great supporting cast (Cybil Shepherd, just wow) pop off the screen though and put it near the top.
I watched Bang The Drum Slowly for this list since I've heard good things about it through the years. De Niro again shows his range as a terminally ill Major League Baseball player. It's a very inspirational story about sticking with your friends through thick and thin.

Taxi Driver just perfectly captures the vibe of working at night, the chill ambience mixed with the scum you have to deal with.

Taxi Driver vs. The Goodfellas is like picking your favourite kid, it depends on the day.
The Goodfellas is an escape into the criminal underworld, a place full of memorable characters where one wrong turn could be your last. It's an enjoyable movie that makes you want to hyuck it up with the main characters and then you're petrified of them the next. It's a story that's easy to wrap your head around, a rise and fall story where the central hook is seeing this outsider try and belong. What puts it all together is Scorsese's love for the craft and his ability to write charming characters while also finding ways to shock his audience. It's a masterpiece and one of those movies that I can't say no to.
However when it came time to put this list together, I found myself leaning towards Taxi Driver. Maybe it's the state of this world right now, but Travis Bickle is alive and well and he's in the heart of every underachieving isolated directionless soul in this god forsaken world. Travis represents the disillusionment of modern society, never quite fitting in and taking umbridge with the scum that prevent society from becoming the metropolis he so desires. I believe there is a line Betsy uses on Travis about a prophet and a pusher that I believe sums his character up. He's a contradiction, he's a character we can understand where he's coming from, but we're not prepared to take the leaps he's willing to take. I believe the police officer had it right all the time, the dude really just needed to get laid. This movie wouldn't exist today simply because there wouldn't be any porno theatres to ruin his chances with Betsy. Never the less, I consider the movie a masterpiece, again you've got Scorsese's eye for detail and ability to create this world of sickos and loners. Then you've got the cast, Bobby D with an A+ performance, Jodie Foster with an A++ performance, Keitel breathes life into a 2D character and Scorsese is so inspired he even puts himself in the movie. Throw in Cybil and Albert Brooks and what do you know a 10/10 imbd picture. Actually it's appropos that Cybil is in there because if Alfred was still in his hey-day, there is no doubt in my mind that Hitch would have casted her. Her performance feels like it's straight out of a Hitchcock picture, probably because my boy Bernard Hermann is there doing what he does best, delivering another masterpiece score.
Awesome movie, and you can see the influence it had on other movies like Fight Club.
