Decided to post both at once since they came in back to back on the list in a nice piece of harmony.

I had Godfather 2 at #1 and Godfather 1 at #2.
Disappointed in them being lower then top 3.
Two of the greatest movies ever made.
BOO!

I'm curious, for those who hold 2 in higher regard than 1, can you explain why? I feel like I've gone back and forth, but ultimately give 1 the slightest nod for being a little better paced maybe and also just being the first.

Listen I love them both a real lot.
I just enjoyed Godfather 2 more. The first scene in Godfather drags for forever and then it gets amazing. Godfather 2 didn’t do it. It’s not like I like it by a lot more but I definitely liked the Deniro scenes.

I had Godfather II at #9 and Godfather at #10. I preferred Godfather II by a nose because of the young Vito scenes.

I know OFOTCN is PW's darling of a movie , but I'm still a bit surprised to see it place over both Godfathers and a few other of the movies though. Maybe I shouldn't be given our history of always voting this movie high , it's nice that we never go full chalk with these things.
The movie is awesome and deserving of a high vote. Great Jack performance and an all time supporting cast full of guys who went on to have great careers. I think it made #5 on my personal list so I'm more than okay with it placing here. I'm getting really curious where it's going to finish in our overall list because just based on how many lists it's placed and how high on each one - I'm thinking this might collectively be PW's favorite movie.

A movie I have to thank school for because they force fucked me with this movie. I ended up being annoyed we had to watch this shit and as the movies going on, I was so into it emotionally that my gangsta ass almost cried during it.
An excellent movie and I am happy with its high placement.

Cuckoo's Nest was my number 8. Jack at his peak combined with a fantastic screenplay, how could you go wrong? Great to see it in the top 5.

The small problem I have with the 70s is that the general public's consensus, and PW's consensus, on the best 70s movies is not in line with my consensus. My big hitters have already gone, and so I'm just yawning while all the predictable names appear at the top. However, I do love one of those predictable names. I doubt it'll make the #1 spot, but here's hoping...

Should have been the #1 movie , especially considering what's remaining. It ended up being my #3 after a recent rewatch - the thing is really just a masterpiece that hasn't lost anything in the past 30 years and holds up incredibly well. The movie was so well crafted , so influential , such a game changer in Hollywood and kicked off one of , if not THE best director's of all time career. Can't beat it.

I think I've worked out the top two, and although they made my list, damn are they disappointing for the top.
Jaws is a masterpiece. Third on my list just behind both Godfathers which are also perfect.
1. The Godfather 2. The Godfather Part II 3. Jaws 4. Taxi Driver 5. Chinatown
7. Manhattan
11. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
15. Grease

Pretty sure these are my misses:
10 .) Serpico 13 .) Patton 14 .) Deliverance 15 .) The French Connection
But considering overall historical importance, impact, repeat viewing, entertainment value, etc. can't really be upset about #1 & #2... Although curious about PW's ordering of them.

Also, Robert Shaw might be my favorite two-timer on this list. The reason why I watched The Sting was because of Robert Shaw. Both were in heavy rotation on TBS back in the day. Jaws was my lock for number 1 and is in contention for my favorite movie of all time. I love the subject matter (I read about the USS Indianapolis and the New Jersey shark attacks way before I ever saw Jaws) and it's core cast and script is one of the best marriages in all of film. Plus it's like a bad ass updated version of Moby Dick with Quint as it's vengeful figurehead. I finally got to see it in theaters this summer as a bonus and got a taste of what it was like to see it originally in 1975. It got a standing ovation once the credits rolled and a few young kids were escorted by their parents after the shark attack scenes.

I'm about to start travelling and probably drop off the PW grid for a couple of weeks, so here's my list:
1. The Sting 2. Dog Day Afternoon 3. Alien 4. Annie Hall 5. Jaws 6. And Justice For All 7. Chinatown 8. The Outlaw Josey Wales 9. Manhattan 10. Kramer vs Kramer 11. Serpico 12. Taxi Driver 13. Carrie 14. The Passenger 15. Black Christmas
Well done to Rocky for winning the list, and I don't have a clue what is going to come second. Unless Rocky II is also 70s?

With all due respect to the other films on the list, NONE of them had the cultural impact of Star Wars.

I've come out against Rocky in the past and sad that I have to do it again , the movie is so overrated and in NO WAY belongs as the #2 movie of the entire 1970's on this or any list. I respect it , it's a good movie and even being in the top ten would make some sense because of it's historical impact and the fact it set the template for so many movies to come. I get all that , I like the movie , but I find it to be pretty overrated as far as just the movie itself goes.
I'm not sure it's the best in the series , it's definitely not my favorite. Fight movies that drew inspiration from it have surpassed it as just better made and more rewatchable movies. I knew it'd make the list and I was okay with it but I was disappointed to see it this high.

I had Rocky as my # 7. I do think #2 is a bit high, but Rocky is definitely worthy of a top 10 placement on cultural impact alone. I mean there is a Rocky Balboa statue in Philadelphia for crying out loud. As for the movie itself, it had fantastic and memorable characters, one of the all-time great movie scores, and strong performances from everyone involved.

I love Star Wars and it definitely is the most culturally impactful movie of the 70s by a clear and huge margin, perhaps even the most culturally impactful movie of all time, but the best movie of the 70s it is not. Cultural impact and quality rarely coincide all too closely.
I’m not mad about it since the movies are great and awesome, but it didn’t make my list.
On the other hand, I don’t get people who hate on Star Wars and feel like much of that hate is undeserved and directed at it solely because it is popular. Star Wars is far superior to Harry Potter, which is the true most overrated series.
Anyone who likes Harry Potter and not Star Wars should be ashamed. I won’t call anyone out by name. You know who you are.
