Having COVID with mental health problems is really rough. I feel like absolute dog shit and have no support. My wife’s sick from it too so everything I say I have to hear a “me too”. My kids healthy again thank God but he’s on 150% energy and I can’t keep up and it’s not his fault. My parents are telling me I’m tough and I’ll get through it and to put garlic in my fucking sock. My job went out of their way to remind me today that the new guidelines state I have to be back into work next week if I’m asymptomatic.
So basically I got covid one week too late and won’t be entitled to my two weeks of COVID pay (which they can suck my dick Bc I’ll tell them I’m still sick) and I got my vaccine too early because I missed out on all the perks of getting it when everyone was being paid to get it. Everything is a day late and a dollar short for me. Fuck the medical field. It ruined my life. Nobody gives a shit how I feel. I have no support system. I hate everything. I kind of wish this shit would just take me and end all the fucking pain and pressure in my mind I have to constantly deal with every single day.
Honestly fuck life.

So annoyed and inconvenienced right now Got a message today from the state government that I was a potential close contact of a case that has tested positive from my flight home... As a result I had to leave my family on holidays down the coast and drive home to isolate until I get my negative result back. I got double vaxxed and have no symptoms, yet the lunatic ride continues. There were 11000 new cases yesterday, clearly the old way you handled things will not work. Contract tracing breaks down in large numbers. If each case had 10 contacts, that is 100k contacts. No way to followup on all of them before the next set of cases comes in. Hearing you had to leave the family really pisses me off.

We had 8000 new cases Dec 23-Dec 27 and Omicron is now the dominant strain. Nothing seems to have changed though. People still gathering in large groups, travelling, etc. Mom and I are going tomorrow or Thurs night for our booster.

US healthcare finally getting some balls. People who refuse to vaccinate are being denied kidneys, hearts and lungs now by healthcare groups who will not approve them transplants. Basically leaves people now hunting for a hospital in Texas or Florida that is not associated with the American Hospital Association, that also has extra organs, to do the transplants.
Anti-vaxers are of course protesting by removing themselves from organ donor lists.

Oh shit, Duke firing people now for being anti-vax. This one gonna be fun people scream my religious freedoms, since they are a methodist school at heart and can use the same argument back at them with specific doctrines to back up the claims.
/// Both and Texas and Florida out of antibodies treatments, which are their only plan for fighting COVID.

My work feels like avengers after Infinity War, so many snapped and just working with the few random staff that are left over like a talking racoon.
Patrons just have the “what are you all worried about? It’s mild symptoms” attitude, that isn’t the issue it’s the time off work and isolation that is the issue. They will be the first to complain if we have to shut again due to no staff.
Omicron is rampant and it’s NYE tomorrow and my work will be busy af, what a weird time to be alive.

what a weird time to be alive. To this end, I really don't know what to make of anything anymore. Like it used to be up felt like down and vice versa at least. But lately it feels like it's suddenly become such a "just fuck it" scenario that I can't tell if, instead of down, up now feels like pumpkin spice latte. Like nothing makes sense, and I can't make sense of nothing.

I am moving to a just fuck it attitude. My state is at 88.3 with one shot, 74.5% fully vaccinated and nearly that many fully boosted. If conservatives want to die for alt right media, then we should just let them at this point. Allow businesses to option to bar the unvaccinated, get passport apps made up and just move on.
I really wonder how long it will take for the right wing here to realize that it is mostly their voters dying and the numbers are large enough to turn a close election to Biden. Unless they already know this and that is why they plan to steal it. Gonna be very hard to political recover from the massive loss of voters given we are on par for a million dead and it greatly favors the party that opposes vaccines.

The two word expression “long Covid” is the newest buzzword for panic Twitter. Every remote silver lining tweeted out about the pandemic is immediately replied with “but long Covid!” as if every person with a Twitter account has a college degree in long Covid and doesn’t want the world to forget it.

Estimates are 10 million people (20%) as now in the US will have long term symptoms that we do not know why exactly are occurring but are in scary places. Five million (10%) of them are not likely to go away on their own and are from permanent damage. Those estimates of prevalence are also considered low and the true estimated is believed to be closer to 40% with symptoms that last for months and 20% that have them indefinitely.
Kind of is a big deal as you can get the long COVID without showing general symptoms.
Health experts consider this a grave concern, why should we ignore them and instead trust in people who claim COVID is not a big deal?
Should pray the link between dementia and COVID turns out false, as if not, US needs to start prepping millions of beds as early onset dementia starts to grow exponentially.

I don’t know anyone saying ignore the possibilities that long-term Covid is a thing, I’m saying leave that discussion for health experts, not Twitter cops trolling for any sign that this isn’t the apocalypse.
it comes across like a group of people who acted like everyone that didn’t double-mask was going to die being disappointed they were wrong that they now they have a new phrase to cling to so they can pretend to be right someday in the future.

Maybe I'm misreading again, but it sounds like #HEEL mikec is way over covid by this point. Yeah, but really I’m over the discourse about it being “person A presents fairly logical, facts based argument. Person B tells them they’re wrong with no evidence” because that’s what we do on the internet I guess. It’s been Republicans for a long time on Covid, but currently I’m running into angry libs using “Long Covid” as the limited evidence boogeyman that they’re using to stop any argument that “hey maybe Omicron isn’t the worst”

We have people calling for lockdowns in Australia and saying we cannot open until all children are double vaccinated. There is no long term studies on the vaccine effect on children and there is no study on long covid in children... How can you argue either side should some how be mandated? I am 100% in support of the media not giving a platform to people with no credibility in their area of commentary, but I don't support deplatforming actual experts whose commentary runs contrary to the established narrative.

Media reform in the US is absolutely needed. We need to reinstate the Truth in Broadcast act that requires separation of factual news and opinion and commentary, and closes the "no reasonable person" loophole. We need journalism back. Bad. I editorialize as fuck here as I think it is fun, but when I read stuff, I want just the facts as they would be presented ala 1970. I do not give a fuck about people's opinions on the news before I get the facts.
When I left UNC almost my entire lab group moved to epistemic cognition to try to teach people how to evaluate science claims and truth. A big one, that was really hard to get across, is just because someone claims to be an expert, and has a progression certification, does not make them an expert. Many doctors speaking out against COVID precautions for instance should not be taken seriously as they lack the expertise to make the claims they are. Most are unpublished, and non-practicing.
We have a tool kit to teach epistemic cognition but get MASSIVE backlash from teachers, because one thing kids will rapidly learn, is their teachers are not experts in what they teach the majority of the time, and their textbooks are not expert treatments of the subjects they are learning.
Related to the argument absence of evidence is not any indication of the future. We know the vaccines are likely safe due to the tech being used having been used elsewhere. Only parts really get swapped around for the vaccines. Double vaccinating is needed to boost the response to the vaccine as well. Whether kids should double vax is not a science question, but an evaluation question whose answer depends on how you define costs and benefits.
Lockdowns also will stop the spread of the virus. I do not think people are denying this. The less you are exposed the less it spreads. The argument there is are they worth it, which makes it an evaluation question with the same constraints as above.
///
As stated in the politics thread because the brain fog is getting bad, fairly sure I got COVID when I went to get my booster shot. Got the sore throat which is the NY telltale sign. Lungs are fine and am just pissed off that the shitting set up for where I got the booster was what exposed me. Outside of the sore throat feels like a normal day for me with just a little more brain fog than normal.
