It is estimated 1/3rd of the population will get this in this US. That is the danger of it. 3 percent seems small, but when you look at 3 percent of 300 million people, 3 percent is 9 million dead. That assumes it will only be a 3 percent mortality rate in the US, however our shitty policies mean it will likely be far higher. I applied to several studies that will shoot me up with this Two weeks in quarantine, some fun drugs and 5k sounds like a good time as far as I am concerned. @admin c really wants that VBookie $$$ Inside betting FTW Not likely to get taken into a trial. They are taking like two dozen people per site and since I am on meds, I am like super low on the lists if I even make first cut at all. But should I make it and survive I will have immunity from the boomer virus and get those sweet vbucks!!!

Well Incy if it is it, you will be better in two weeks without treatment. The danger is it progresses to pneumonia in some cases. Since I do not believe you smoked, pneumonia is unlikely to develop even if you have this. Never smoked anything in my life, I was only trying to get tested to do my civil duty. I have one daughter in kindergarten and another in primary school and I am wary of being a burden to those with compromised immune systems. But hey, I would even pay for my test but I can't.

That is the irony of this all is the test kits themselves are limited, so they cannot test everyone, only those showing symptoms. Up to half of the people infected show no signs though, particularly the young.
This is basically a stress test on society to see if our healthcare system can handle the volume a true pandemic will bring and the answer will be a resounding no. People will claim things like better healthcare quality and faster access to healthcare are a hindsight thing that this virus showed in the coming years, despite everyone saying for decades we are severe risk in the event another true pandemic hits from the way he handle healthcare at all.
Three weeks time or so, when nations become overloaded we will see interesting conversations as the trolley problem plays out in real time and society must choice who dies. Italy already is facing this problem but it is easy to ignore it there. When it hits larger places with more vocal liberal groups things will really hit the fan as people debate if we should use wartime triage to focus on treating who will likely survive or cater to those most at risk and let the healthy turn elsewhere for treatment. Treating everyone is not an option in the very near future, even with a true cure.

Also current trolley problem in the US is do we close the schools. If we close the schools many kids will go without eating and be left home without supervision leading to increases in childhood illnesses from malnutrition and accidents. If we do not close the schools, we have no way to stop transmission through the schools, which essentially negates social distances for any family with kids and thus will face an overloaded healthcare system. So policy makers are facing a question who matters more, the elderly or the youth? It is estimated 22 million kids will go without meals in the event of total school closures with 2 million not having anywhere to go during school hours. Compared to this there are 20 million adults over the age of 75 who are in the higher risk group to face death (15%) by this virus. The big difference is the elderly tend to come from higher means and the children poverty. Be interesting to see how this plays out.

Like, you mean other than the few people I love most in the world dying?

Yeah I think some people are forgetting that while they are not affected, I assume they have older loved ones.
This is scary. A simulation that used this virus to test a disaster response at John Hopkins that was considered a disaster, and it is playing out exactly as it is in the real world. In the end this disaster simulation they concluded would lead to wide scale economic collapse and a massive loss of public trust in government could last decades.

Socio-economic impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemicConsider this, this begun on December 1st, 2019. Just 3 Months ago. " By 28 February 2020, stock markets worldwide saw their largest single-week declines since the 2008 financial crisis.[23][24][25] Stock markets crashed on 9 March 2020, with falls of several percent in the world's major indices. As the epidemic spreads, global conferences and events across technology, fashion, sports, etc., are being cancelled or postponed.[26] While the monetary impact on the travel and trade industry is yet to be estimated, it is likely to be in the millions and increasing. Not likely for MMA, UFC Brazil and UFC Columbus both look like they are going to be cancelled. UFC 249 is at great risk too. I swear, if we lose Khabib-Ferguson for a 5th time, we better lose WM too. If only for reports of Vince freaking out.

Vince stands alone. UFC may not want to run empty arenas. Vince absolutely will. Then again, UFC may need the gate to survive. Vince can possibly survive off the TV deals and other WWE income. Fuck, they will likely brand it WWE unplugged and make it into a real thing. Sure Heyman and others are having a field day pitching ways to turn this into the next big thing.

The funniest part about this to me is how unbelievably shitty the health care field exposes itself to be when big things go down. As I stated earlier, they are being told not to test everyone for the coronavirus unless they fit every single check point/category. I read that iNCY ran into that same problem. You can literally feel all the symptoms but not traveled and they’ll be like “yeah so here’s Tamiflu, good luck.” Especially if your job is not important and involves a lot of people. Then to top it off, my fucking boss thinks this is a fucking joke. He’s getting annoyed by EMTs getting fucking nervous about getting this shit and exposing their families. He literally had the balls to say, “why join the medical field if you’re not willing to deal with this shit?” Great point IF you didn’t sit in a fucking office all day and deal with absolutely zero patient care. So who are you to judge how people want to live? Let me ask another question. How well we’re first responders of 9/11 treated post 9/11? “Oh you have cancer because of the burning buildings. Wait a minute, you used to smoke cigarettes. DISQUALIFIED!” Fuck sacrificing yourself with no safety net for yourself. This ain’t the fucking military where they get protection and all that free shit afterwards. This is a fucking job that we are grossly underpaid in. Speaking of pay; if every job gets to work from home or shut down except for the medical field; shouldn’t we get paid extra? I mean we’re the only assholes out there exposing ourselves to disease and working while everyone quarantines and watches Netflix. And man oh man. Let me get into this dumb ass NYC protocol regarding the Coronavirus. So if you suspect your patient has Coronavirus, you have to put a mask on yourself and your patient. Then you have to call telemetry (which is basically a city doctor who tells you what to do in big situations). But while you’re waiting for a doctor to pick up, you have to sit in a slightly ventilated back of an ambulance with a coronavirus patient and sit on hold on the phone for what could be a total of 20 fucking minutes. All for the doctor to say, “okay, transport to this hospital.” Oh no shit Sherlock. Guys I’m sorry but I am really pissed off and nervous. When billion dollar companies like the NBA are shutting down seasons because of this disease and losing all that money then CLEARLY this is bigger then we actually know. This is only the fucking beginning. Wait until people start looting and breaking into people’s homes for food and shit. This is about to be survival of the fittest. This shit is bad and I’m only telling you guys what I see in the medical field in New York fucking City.

Also IDGAF if I get it. I just want to protect my wife, my son and my family. If I get it, I’m probably a goner since I smoke cigarettes like a chimney. But I can not sit here and watch my family suffer with this illness.
Yet I have to get up every fucking day, sit in an crowded city bus, head to the city and be around sick people. I’m just really pissed off about everything right now and it’s really stemming from my job. We get disrespected by patients on a daily basis but now that there’s a new killer virus they beg for our help and plead with us to save them. So what? In a few months when this is all said and done they can pull out their camera phones and record us again trying to get someone fired? Fuck them.
And my bosses too. Man I’m really pissed off about how they are handling this shit. It’s more of an annoyance to them that they can’t pinch the pennies and please their contracts.

I work in retail, and after 2 weeks of panic buying and mass-hysteria, I'm almost itching for a shutdown.
Literally thousands of people of varying health and hygiene levels visit my store a day, and while I do revel in the idea of a bit of disaster, I am hoping for an eventual safe shut-down of any business over 100 employees/customers for at least for a week or two as a precursor to any further action. Allowing time for medical professionals and governments to fully gauge the situation and obviously slow or hinder any further or possible spread of the virus.

Especially about March Madness. I love this time of the year for sports as it's the last big hoorah before the wait for football season. And now it's all ruined. But safety first.

UK government have announced we're in the next stage of coping with it.
We've been told if we have the even the mildest of symptoms, we need to self isolate for 7 days. Don't ring anyone or go doctors/hospital, just don't go anywhere.
At least Trump still thinks we can enter the US, but not the rest of Europe.

Events cancelled. Schools in the area are off for 3 weeks (minimum) starting Monday. But my ass will still be at work. A lady has been calling off like 80% this year. Management doesn't do anything about it so whatever. Course now they are definitely not gonna do anything about it. She's not lazy, she was just smart enough to not risk infection.
Kinda bummed because my local theme park is opening up in a month. Granted the April dates are usually rained out anyway, but that's probably gonna be an issue if we're still dealing with Corona-chan. But even if they're open I'm not sure I wanna risk it. Then again with my fastpass it's not like I'll get coughed on waiting in a line...
Still no soap on the shelves. Funny six months ago I felt like I was the only person who even washed his hands. Trust me I can ballpark how many people do since I refill it at work.

I don't want to come to work anymore. Not because I don't want to get sick, but all anyone is talking about is this and while I don't disagree that it should be taken seriously, some people are going to the extreme and it's driving me insane. Someone coughs or sneezes and gets hosed down with Lysol which makes you further cough and sneeze. My co-workers keep telling me to cancel my trip next week, that I'm selfish to be going so I said fine I'll self quarantine when I get back like you suggested and then they say 'well let's not be hasty'. The health authorities keep mentioning about self isolating, but Ness is right, if we dared stayed home (even if we were still working - which I have the luxury to do except I have a boss who doesn't think it's productive) the higher ups would not agree. And that's the other side of the coin isn't it: 'here's what we suggest you do' vs 'here's the reality of your situation'. I have long been told 'if you are sick stay home', but the powers that be don't do anything to support that.
What about people all over the world who can't afford to be off work? What about the front line workers like Kid, or like c mentioned the USA where some people might need to go to a Doctor but won't because of the cost?
