I spent five years living with undocumented immigrants in cheap NC housing, these are people who are so scared they do not go to the doctor. Most of the abuse we see in benefits are from white people in health care milking the system. Even if people do milk the system, it is 1000 a per months or so wasted which is nothing compared to the millions a month health care providers milk in false claims. Finally the greatest receivers of essnetially welfare in the US are corporations as corporate welfare means our largest companies do not pay taxes at all. They are essentially government subsided costing the US billions.

Border security is not really needed. It does not stop the drugs coming as most come in at legal points of entry, mainly the ports in Cali. Why carry a bag in across the border, or in a car when you can move a ton of product in a cargo crate at a time. Mules cost money.

Even if we build that wall, people can be run in through the drug tunnels or moved the same ways drugs are in cargo crates. Coyotes will just change the method they used to get people into the US. We are literally wasting billions on a image of border security that is a symbol and nothing more. And apparently cannot endure even a strong wind. Nor keep people out as videos of people scaling it easily or digging under it have gone viral.

First let's nip one of these two things in the bud, few immigrants use American healthcare. You cannot get medicaid or medicare without proof of citizenship. No federal funds will go directly to these people, despite what many anti-immigrant talking heads claim. They represent less than 10 percent of US healthcare costs and most of those costs come from states that voted to offer care to them or from Christian hospitals that will treat them as an act of charity.

As for education, we educate all. We pay for this in the money we save on food and construction costs, the two main jobs that immigrants work for less than minimum wage in many cases. America wants the benefit of cheap farm hands and cheap construction costs that immigrants provide this is the cost, educating their young. Illegal immigrants again are a minority of the student population, and when it comes to college they are unable to get federal money.

I am for relaxed borders. We should be able to remove people, but we have seen we cannot stop people from coming into this country and do not even want to since we rely on them for entire industries in the US. So why not make the system we have work, rather than pretend we have a different one and work towards making a fictional system work? Hell most of the people calling for immigration reform hire illegal immigrants willing. Trump himself is known to hire them.

Should be noted one of the largest critics of the way we deal with illegal immigrants in the US is the Church. Turning away the needy is in stark contrast to the words of Christ. Given almost all of these people are Christian, the Church wishes for them to be allowed in when they are escaping from the wars in Central and South America and the largest provider of refugee sanctuary are churches as currently ICE is forbidden to enter them.

Finally, the US should clean up the mess it created. We destabilized that entire region in the 1970's when we systematically brought FREEDOM to those countries by picking who we wanted to lead them. We should take in the refugees fleeing from the insane states we created.

As I said it is easy to paint these people as monsters but I worked with many of them and living in communities with them for years. Nearly all of the actions attributed to them are simply not true of the average person. Most are peaceful, deeply religious people who just want to work to provide better futures for their families. They know they are not being paid fairly, and destroy their bodies with the backbreaking nature of their work, but they are happy to have that chance. As for the kids, one of my classmates specialized in latino education, with a focus on victims of trauma, and these kids seem horrors that would break most Americans. Some of them seen their families hacked apart with machetes, people gunned down in front of them, classrooms ripped apart by automatic rifle fire and violent rapes, people blown apart by explosives and far worse. Many that have fled here have seen people die. This is why their parents risk the kid's lives to get to the US. These are the kids that people are saying do not deserve an education.

And of course Rags is salty. Most of us are salty. Our country is being turned into the type of shit hole we would normally invade. We have literal nazis walking proud in our streets. Swastika popping up all over, hate crimes on the rise and are defending a person associated with numerous crimes. Meanwhile we have people who are brainwashed by conservative media who rattle off that facts are not real and things like Hillary personally killed people and ordered foreign militants kill American soldiers. A lot of the crime committed was not related to the no bail law. You shoot someone you are not getting out without bail. Teenagers are covered different laws so youth crime was not really affected by this reform either.

Fun story from someone else; a friend was at a hotel near a hospital in a town in Canada (he had stayed there over night before a procedure at the hospital). There was an american lady there that was talking to him about our healthcare system for a bit, finally she asked 'what do you think about healthcare in Canada". His answer swas something to the effect of 'it's the best thing to ever happen to this country' I mean he's old and was from a time before we got something resembling our current system. I guess she stopped the convo right there, like she was hoping he would say there was problems and confirm the narrative the right says about social systems elsewhere.

If Bernie sanders wants healthcare for all, then I can't fathom why all the poor people in ameria who essentially don't have healthcare wouldn't vote for him. Surely of the 45% of the country who don't vote in your elections enough of them would mobilise for this issue. Easy win for an election, get an actual system in place before Bernie dies in office because he's so old and then let the vice take over.

As a general rule of thumb I don’t watch many primary debates because it’s just theater, but I watched the NH one and Warren promoting more investigations into Trump if she’s president gave Yang the ability to speak some real common sense to the room that the American people don’t really find value in that, even comparing the promise to what a developing country would do to former leaders. Thank goodness someone said it. Do stuff for people, not against your opponents.

And it is not a 1:1 comparison. Almost every other country places limits on health care costs. The US refuses to do that, which is why universal healthcare is not an option. Because you know there are no doctors outside of the US or research studies as cost control stifles innovation and motivation.

Yes, we are, but healthcare should be one of the basic human rights, free for all, funded by the state, so I don't know why it's considered an unreasonable concept.

Not saying free healthcare is perfectt, it's about the implementation. Our government has been underfunding the NHS (National Health Service) for years, so you have too few doctors and nurses who as a result are generally overworked and underpaid. Hospitals are overcrowded. One of the bigger anti-Brexit talking points was the concept of our government "selling" the NHS to Trump after we leave the EU. Even now, I'd say the NHS as it is is still preferable to US healthcare. At least people aren't terrified to go to the doctor because they wouldn't be able to pay the rent.

The cost of free healthcare for all for the US has been calculated.   It is absolutely staggering, an additional 32 trillion over 10 years.    It would require massive changes in how we tax the population (just taxing the rich ain't gonna cut it) and it would require a massive shift in how we allocate our federal dollars.

I'm already paying taxes, I'd rather have that money go to health care or free education or housing for the homeless, or all of the above, instead of turning kids in Afghanistan into skeletons.

I couldn't agree more about the F-35.   We already  have the F-22 Raptor for air superiority and the A-10 Thunderbolt is arguably the best ground support aircraft in the world.   Really the only version of the F-35 you could argue is necessary would be the VTOL  version to replace the Harrier the Marines use.   


I even largely agree with KingInTheNorth about preferring to spend tax dollars on domestic needs over foreign policy and  invasions.   But doing so would hands down change the balance of power around the world if other countries  didn't step up to fill the void.    The US has gone isolationist before and it  wasn't a very good call back then.

I love how 32 trillion over 10 years makes health unaffordable but 15 trillion in tax cuts is done without argument. Reverse Trump and Bush's tax cuts and the US will be able to afford health care. There is no reason an employee at amazon should be paying more in taxes than Walmart itself.

Want to fix healthcare in the US, remove some tax cuts and let the government negotiate for prices.  Odds are reversing the Trump tax cut and allowing the government to negotiate prices will be all that is needed for universal healthcare in the US.

Or we can continue to believe the US is larger than the rest of the developed world who solved this issue.
