Supreme Court is free to interpret the constitution however they see fit. With no code of conduct or ethics, they can use any batshit interpretation they wish. Normally stare decisis prevents this, but the federalist society been pushing justices who do not respect predicant. Now we got five in the court no one can predict what will legal tomorrow as long term interpretations of laws mean nothing now. The entire legal world can see the laws one way, but if five of the nine justices disagree, then everyone is wrong, and they must now interpret the law in the manner in which they decree.
The fix is a code of conduct and a code of ethics, which the GOP and the court itself rejects, despite it being a part of every other court in the US. What are normal actions for the Supreme Court would see a normal judge disbarred and charged for bribery.
There are other more radical fixes to depoliticize the court, but again, the GOP does not want them, as they want to be able to pack the court like they did, so if they cannot pass laws in Congress, they can get the justices to do it with very carefully structured lawsuits.

Legal experts slamming the gay rights Supreme Court case. The details of the case are weird. The person filing the complaint had no business. There was no same sex couple making a request. They sued using a hypothetical case that Supreme Court took up despite it not having standing. Standing is a backbone of the legal system, and the Court utterly ignored this. Law professors are unsure how to even teach this, as locus standi is a backbone of the legal system, but this case the plaintiff lacked standing to bring forth a lawsuit. Which then begs the question, if standing was not required here, did the high court just rule that standing does not matter at all in legal cases anymore, as this sets the precedent that it does not matter? And if standing still does matter, then again, why are the Supreme Court not expected to adhere to this basic principle like every other court is. Also how do we know when precedent is and is not set by these out of the ordinary rulings? www.mediaite.com/tv/former-doj-lawyer-utterly-baffled-by-supreme-courts-reasoning-in-gay-rights-case-there-was-no-real-issue/

Appears that Smith will be examining Trump's call to the gov of Arizona to alter the results of the election in the current investigation.
The Jan investigation report should be an interesting read if it is made public as it covers both the election interference and the riot. And I assume it will be as moderates do respond to this stuff.

Harvard sued under the civil rights act for legacy admission, saying that taking legacy admissions denies people their equal rights to attend the college as people who not as qualified are accepted beyond them. This contradicts the recent supreme court ruling that ability alone should be used to determine who is and is not admitted.

Next cases on the Supreme Court docket:
Moore v. United States:
This case boils down to essentially if the US can tax unrealized gains or if the 16th amendment limits taxation to only realized gains. If it is rules that only realized gains can be legally taxed, then wealth taxes will be unconstitutional. Most of the justices have significant unrealized holdings.
U.S. v. Rahimi:
This case revolves around whether or not people involved in domestic charges or have restraining orders against them due to threat of imminent harm have a 2nd right to guns. Almost certainly if they rule yes, then the next case pushed will be for felony convictions having a right to guns, including people who were jailed for prior gun crime.
Vidal v. Elster:
Funky trademark case over whether "Trump too small" is trademarkable or not. Case claims they cannot use Trump's name without his consent since he is a simple private citizen.
Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo:
This is the case that seeks to kill the chevon defense. Basically determines who has the power to interpret administrative agencies rules, the agencies who issue them or the courts. Right now the chevon defense is that agencies determine what the rules mean. This case wants to move it to the courts.
Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP:
Case is if South Carolina is allowed to racially gerrymander or not to preserve Nancy Mace's seat in the 2024 election. Since this court does not believe in precedent, GOP sees it worth it to just keep throwing these cases at them to see if they can get the 5 to allow racial gerrymandering.

In your everyday news, bag of cocaine found in a common area of the West Wing of the White House Sunday. Was in an area that tourists have access to and found when the Bidens were not present. Secret Service now investigation how cocaine ended up being left in an area that primarily they had access to when it was found.
And of course given the talk in the news these days, whether or not it was by accident, or intentionally planted by someone with access so the GOP could accuse Hunter of having coke parties in the White House.

Arizona AG says they will not honor the latest supreme court decision claiming businesses can discriminate and will continue to bring cases against those who do.
The predicted nullification crisis that would follow a court people deem illegitate is here. US never did take a nullification fight to the true end. Wars or compromise always happened first. And not sure it ever involved nullifying the supreme court itself, and not just the federal government.

So I've been staying outta these threads simply because I've feeling extra down because of work/personal and going through a time and this these are only ever negative but I had to share. Was in the lobby (fun 100+* indoors is always fun) cleaning the PO boxes from dust when I overheard some people talking. Lady bitching about rising price in stamps and the guy she was talking about it with said you know why that is. Then they went on a tangent about making the right choice in November.
Honestly though, do people really think if Trump or another R wins that inflation goes away or if Biden didn't win that we wouldn't have it. There's just a weird magic eraser button people seem to have with the president that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I'm not the most knowledgeable person about how everything works, but is it just blind worship/hate of the other side?

Grubhub, Uber Eats and DoorDash suing NYC claiming they lack the authority to demand workers be paid a local min wage. This is after NYC started to demand that food delivery people be paid $18ish and hour which is the NYC min wage, instead of $7 an hour on average which they were being paid before.
Argument that will go through the courts is states and localities do not have the legal authority to determine wages, only Congress, and that companies should be able to pay independent contractors whatever they wish as they are not employees.
National average for these employees is $1.50 an hour.

Support was found for blue states subsidizing red states as blue states have higher incomes and pay more in taxes, and red states have more disabled workers due to lack of healthcare. Essentially what happens in the end is democratic states higher taxes end up paying for red state healthcare as they push the costs to the federal government via disability. www.washingtonpost.com/business/2023/07/07/states-federal-benefits/No shock my states gets fucked the most. People who were caught abusing the program are spending 2 to 5 years in jail and are ordered to reply it, in non-dischargeable debt, but it is very unlikely they will ever be able to repay millions. nypost.com/2023/07/14/ppp-fraud-is-worst-in-history-200b-stolen-splurged-on-lamborghinis-and-bling/

DOJ tells Mississippi that it is not legal to appoint judges for black districts but allow elections for them in white districts. Mississippi says they have to do to to cut down the homicide account in black cities, seemingly ignoring that places with more people will have more crime by default.
Also since the GOP fucked around, Biden's new loan plan will cost 50 billion more. Once it goes into place, it becomes non-reversible for people currently on the new plans. Effectively this also makes college free for low income students who attend public colleges.
GOP claims that it is now better to just quit your job and live off handouts. Surprisingly none of the people actually saying this appear to have quit their jobs. It is good for YOU to do it, but not for them.

Did not see conservatives nullifying a conservative packed supreme court, but here we are. If allowed to stand, starts a precedent for nullification, which many states are waiting for to put in gun bans.

Trump was informed he will be charged imminently in relation to trying to overturn the 2020 election. Source again is Trump, but timeline makes sense as it was said Smith had wrapped up the Trump investigation last week and a grand jury ruled on charges. Likely will happen today or tomorrow with arrangement in person next week.
Jan 6th investigation is still going on and will for some time as they hunt down who else was involved that should be charged. Made clear early on Trump was unlikely to take a fall alone. Documents case supported this. Very likely Lindsey Graham can be charged as well, along with state level people involved in the fake elector plots.

Florida approved how black history will be taught. They will teach that slavery was beneficial to both parties as America got a source of cheap migrant labor, and migrants got a place to stay, meaningful employment and a chance to learn more skills. It is also taught that the slaves were responsible for the racial violence against them. Will also be taught that slaves were enslaved by their own people which made it ok for Americans to then buy them because they played no part in them becoming slaves in the first place.

DOJ target letter to Trump said the next set of charges they will ask the Grand Jury to vote on are:
Conspiracy to Defraud the United States (18 USC § 371) Obstruction of an Official Proceeding (18 USC § 1512) Conspiracy to deprive people of their rights (18 USC § 241)
Charges will be in DC. Counts not known. Nor is it known who else will be charged as all crimes discovered in this probe will be charged.
Grand jury also was given a chance to hear from Trump, but he declined showing charges are imminent.
The document trial was set for May 2024.
Georgia charging still expected in August.
