Benny The Jet was my #6 and I was pleasantly surprised to see him finish so high. Wasn't sure if PW was a Sandlot-friendly zone. That's another movie which could easily make my 90s list. UT covered most of the highlights but forgot Benny intentionally hitting the ball into Smalls' glove. Stuff of legend right there. Oh shit that’s right. I mean teaching that nerd how to play baseball in general was quite impressive.

Any place that isn't Sandlot-friendly needs a double dose of Forrest Gump brand Chicken Noodle Soup for the Soul TM... or otherwise needs to be chalked up as a soulless hellscape that I want no part of.

I had Benny the Jet originally, but bumped him for some unknown reason, because I thought he was still on my list.
Edit: I have him at #8, I guess I had multiple lists on my computer.

I love Happy Gilmore the movie but couldn't vote for him on the list , I get it ... he has one trick but that trick is remarkable. However given the fact that he was a failed hockey player and spent 90% of the movie not knowing how to putt and I assume how to work the short game ... he just didn't make the cut for me.
If I made my list based solely on how much I like the character - he would have been in contention for #1. However I went nerdy and thought of their abilities as well and well yeah.

I've golfed I think two or three games in my life. It's so fucking hard. The fact that Happy could go pro with virtually zero training was astounding to me. Super impressive.
Also, I'm getting REALLY nervous Air Bud isn't going to appear on this list. Which is insane. He's a golden retriever who can play basketball, football, soccer, baseball, and volleyball. Name ONE human who's been successful in that many sports with as much of an initial setback as Air Bud had being... you know, not human.

Golfing is stupid hard , I tried it for like two hards going like 2 - 3 times a week and never seemed to get any better so I rage quit and sold all my gear and never went back. I'm usually good at sports and it frustrated me beyond belief. Even tried the patented Happy swing joking around and whiffed - that would take insane eye hand coordination.
Still though , that was his only trick. Going pro was impressive but when your driving the green on Par 4's because of that one trick you should be one of the best ever if you honed even the smallest details of your game. Plus as I said - he clearly lacked something because dude couldn't skate and make an amateur hockey team.

There is going to be someone massive left off this list anyway you slice it now that Happy is revealed to be number 2. I'm somewhat flabbergasted.
Anyway Happy was my number 4, he was basically John Daly on steroids with his crazy long game and bringing in a different culture to the fan base. He also had so many memorable lines and fought Bob Barker which he lost. I wonder if UT forgot to hold that against him as well?
I've golfed for over 30 years and got down to the mid 80's for scoring at my peak. I used to spend a couple of hours every day after school and during summer break honing my wedge game which really helped. Anyway I got away from practicing and as it goes my scores ballooned back up to the 100 range accordingly, the difficulty never lets up.

I didn't vote for Happy, though I love the movie. Yes, golf is very difficult, I don't play anymore. A million years ago, when I still did, I went golfing with my friend who is a PGA tour member. I said how many strokes do I get, he said none. I said excuse me, 2 of my drives equal 1 of yours...maybe. He said, I brought my sisters clubs. I said, that's nice that you'll play with women's clubs, but you'll still kill me. He said, your forgetting one very important thing. Then it hit me, she's left handed...he's not. He still beat me by 12 shots...using left handed women's clubs. I did break 100 that day, because he was helping read greens...which I can't do to save myself. He shot 82, not even trying with his wrong hand. I shot 94 and that's the best I ever shot...I'm pretty sure I got some "close enoughs" and "I didn't see anythings." I'd probably shoot in the mid 120's if I went out today, maybe even worse.

I'm forgetting someone because I'm looking at my list and it's pretty mainstream, and I don't see anyone massive other than the obvious #1. Barely anyone from my list has made it though so what do I know. I went with characters I enjoyed watching and movies I liked. Only Crash Davis and Happy Gilmore from my list made it (#4 & #2 respectively). "Wild Thing" Vaughn was on my list but fell off. I nearly voted for Smalls from The Sandlot but he was an early cut. I liked that movie as a kid but it wasn't anywhere close to being one of my favourite sports movies. Shane Falco was the last cut from my list. Finished at #11. I loved that movie but he didn't quite make it.

Assuming Rocky is running away with #1, here's mine:
1. Air Bud 2. Louden Swain 3. Henry Rowengartner 4. Happy Gilmore 5. Forrest Gump 6. Roy McAvoy 7. Shane Falco 8. Shooter McGavin 9. Ernie McCracken 10. The Hanson Brothers
Can't believe the lack of respect and recognition for Air Bud.

Can't remember if I voted for Happy or he was a late cut.... Turns out he was my #9. Loving all these golf stories. Who knew there were so many bowlers here on PW? Impressed by the skills of Shootist and @ck. I'm the bridge between UT & 🤯 in that I played about 15 times. A few with a friend who played in high school, a few more times with my 90s wrestling fan cousin, and all the rest with my longtime golfer old man. I was terrible and never showed any improvement. You need to have a certain mentality for golf and I do not have it. How can a little ball just sitting there not go where you want it to? Spent most of my time in the woods. Did not like! And gave up that stupid game. lol @ PI still going hard for Air Bud. I'm more annoyed by the lack of Apollo Creed on this list. Come on, people! Get your act together.

Thanks but my game now is a shadow of it's former self. I always had the Phil Mickelson left miss off the tee since I'm also a left hander which is the dreaded slice. Apollo is a third big potential whiff. Shooter McGavin was the one I was referencing in my first post, the ultimate punchable villain. Who knows maybe people did forget about Rocky? Like the Ty Webb and Roy McAvoy mentions for even more golf love.

Happy Gilmore was my #5 mainly for sheer entertainment value
1. 2.Ricky Vaughn (Major League) 3.Shane Falco (The Replacements) 4.Luther "Shark" Lavay(Any Given Sunday) 5.Happy Gilmore (Happy Gilmore) 6.The Hanson Brothers (Slap Shot) 7.Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez(The Sandlot) 8.Paul Crewe(The Longest Yard) 9.Roy Munson (Kingpin) 10.Ricky Bobby (Talladega Nights)
There is no way Shark wasn't going to make my list as he's portrayed by my favorite real-life athlete ever.

Nice to see Sandlot love (known as The Sandlot Kids over here). Don't think it was especially popular in the UK. No one I know ever talks about it anyway. But I had it on VHS as a kid and it is one of my absolute favourites and one of the ultimate nostalgia trips for me. It is probably why I have a nostalgia for that era of America despite growing up in Scotland in the 90s. And I am glad to see people seem to be using a word for that feeling now, even if it isn't in the dictionary - anemoia. I haven't got time for baseball, any American sport really, but they make good movies. Such a sublime soundtrack - "This Magic Moment" "YOU LITTLE PERVERT!" "Aw man, he's in deep shit". Ray Charles' version of America the Beautiful will always be tops for me. FOR-EVER. FOR-EVER. FOR-EVER. 1. Air Bud 2. Louden Swain 3. Henry Rowengartner 4. Happy Gilmore 5. Forrest Gump 6. Roy McAvoy 7. Shane Falco 8. Shooter McGavin 9. Ernie McCracken10. The Hanson Brothers Love seeing the bolded here. He would've been my #1. I genuinely think it is Bill Murray's best role and probably my pick for funniest film of the 90s. Loving all these golf stories. Who knew there were so many bowlers here on PW? See, you are a subtle sunuvabitch when you want to be.

More synchronicity with our lists. For those who have the Hollywood Suite channels Happy Gilmore is airing on the 90's channel while Caddyshack is airing on the 80's right now.

Boring yet probably correct #1. Don't have a ton to add. Rocky had incredible stamina , was a powerful lefty and clearly when motivated could go toe to toe with anyone. Iconic movies , iconic character - so yeah.
Y'all slept on a few people and it makes me sad , fuck Air Bud , Maggie Fitzgerald and Lola Bunny should have gotten some love.
