Rocky Balboa is the only fictional athlete that has a real life statue dedicated to him. That pretty much ends any debate on whether or not he's the proper #1

Rocky Balboa is the only fictional athlete that has a real life statue dedicated to him. That pretty much ends any debate on whether or not he's the proper #1 I mean, considering how long Filthadelphia sports teams gave Filthadelphia sports fans nothing to root for or believe in... it's no surprise they erected a monument to something fictitious.

1. Rocky Balboa 2. Shooter McGavin (Happy Gilmore) 3. Apollo Creed (Rocky) 4. Happy Gilmore 5. Ivan Drago (Rocky IV) 6. Reg Dunlop (Slap Shot) 7. Roy McAvoy (Tin Cup) 8. Ty Webb (Caddyshack) 9. Ricky Vaughn (Major League) 10. Crash Davis (Bull Durham) Rocky was the easiest choice for number 1 since doing these list. To add to what UT said he was also versatile being able to adopt Apollo's fighting style and even switching to a traditional right handed stance against Clubber Lang. He later became a great mentor to Adonis Creed and shared some pretty valuable advice. Shooter McGavin was one of the biggest omissions, besides being instantly quotable the dude could hole puts without looking and was a whiz in general around the greens sinking chip shots at will. Several of the tournaments portrayed in the movie he won multiple times and even had a run of 3 in a row at one tourney which is extremely difficult. Apollo Creed who had never been knocked off his feet in 30 some fights before meeting Rocky, that's impressive. Plus he had all the charisma and box office marketability of a Muhammad Ali. Roy McEvoy and Ty Webb were more for their entertainment value but both had serious skills as golfers. Plus Ty Webb conquered the art of "being the ball" in his zen like approach to the game.

It was Rocky and then everyone else for me.
I voted for Ty Webb, because of course. Roy McEvoy was a late cut for me.
I didn't vote for Happy Gilmore, so Shooter got no love either. Shooter although a great golfer was a major dickhead.

I actually had Rocky at #2. But I'm ok with him winning. His feuds and bouts with Apollo, Clubber & Drago are movie magic. Rocky spawned the most successful sports movie franchise in history while also writing the book on how to do a sports movie. Seriously, just about every single sports movie that followed is just another underdog "Rocky" story transplanted to a different sport.
1. Roy Hobbs (#7) 2. Rocky Balboa (#1) 3. Ivan Drago (#6) 4. Apollo Creed 5. Clubber Lang 6. Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez (#3) 7. Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn (#5) 8. Forrest Gump 9. Happy Gilmore (#2) 10. Daniel LaRusso
*Al Bundy would have made my list around #5 if I had remembered him.
Clubber and especially Apollo were robbed.
Sidney Deane & Billy Hoyle were my last cuts because I couldn't decide which one to pick and didn't want to use up two spots. So I cut them both. Greatest sports movie duo? Probably.

Yeah but Shooter couldn’t win the big one , never got that green jacket. Choker and a scumbag does not a winner make!
