Can't believe this was a Golden Raspberry contender.
I love BD!

Pretty much the same as Meet the Parents, not near as into it as the hype, but a fine film, no complaints.
Uncut Gems I loved, his best dramatic effort by far, I had it at #2, but that could also be a bit of recency bias, though it still wouldn’t be much lower. Fantastic film, counter to the last two, I’m with the hype about on this one.

I had Big Daddy @ #2 right behind CLICK. I loved that movie as a youngster and watched it a million times.
I had Uncut Gems @ #4. Not sure if it was recency bias or whatnot, but the movie was an anxiety filled rollercoaster for me with an unreal ending. Excellent performance by Sandler and deserves the praise it has gotten.

Big Daddy has shown up enough so I posted two.
Plus I just watched Uncut Gems last night and I'm unsure on what exactly to think about it. I liked it , didn't love it like some seem to. I thought it started really weird and the pace was off and confusing. It gets better as the movie goes along and fits more with the story of the movie but it takes some time to recover from the beginning.
I wouldn't blame anyone for hating this movie , it's everywhere and messy as shit but there is a solid and fun story there. Probably wouldn't have made my Top 10 and I don't know that I'll go back to it for a very long time. #7 seems too high here.

I think a rewatch or taking a stepback would give us better confirmation of our placement of the movie.

I think the hectic mess was exactly what it needed to be, as that’s exactly what Howard’s life was. Not sure how you streamline all of those threads and keep the anxiety and tension that build to the climax.

Not sure how you streamline all of those threads and keep the anxiety and tension that build to the climax. I get that , it's like the ending of Goodfellas which also made sense and I do love. They built to it and conditioned the audience though , Uncut Gems just never stops to breath and seems to be erratic for erratic sake and they make some really weird cuts that just throw you out of the movie at times. Especially in the beginning where it almost lost me. The story wasn't tight enough for that kind of editing and pacing.

Uncut Gems sucked. Meh at best. No wonder he got snubbed.
Credit where credit is due though, I did like the finishing sequence.
Also liked mostly going with lesser known/unknown/first time actors.
That's as nice as I can be about it.
Absolutely should not be above Meet the Parents or Zoolander.

I was just going to let this thread lie when Uncut Gems got shadow dropped.
Easily the most challenging role of Sandler's career, where he actually has to inhibit a character and doesn't get the luxury of following a well worn character arc. He's just Howie, warts and all, an absolute phony who spends his mornings evading debt collectors and putting on a facade at home with a wife who cannot stand the sight of him. Just about every relationship he's got is irrevocably damaged, but in his heart of hearts, he believes that if he can just hit it big once it'll change everything.
The movie does an excellent job of making the audience feel his anxiety. It's like the entire film is shot in an elevator and Howard has all these different worlds converging in at once to expose him for what he is. If he can just hit it big, it'll all go away and he has so many irons in the fire, one of them has to turn out. Except his insecurities, his frayed relationships everything comes back to bite him. Even when he does try to redeem himself, it's much too late and you get the feeling that his wife has heard that speech at least a dozen times before. She probably believed it the first half a dozen times, but she's well and truly counting down the days now.
I see the ending in a similar way as the Wrestler. Howard knows his days are numbered, if it's not this gamble, it's something else. He's too far gone, he's rotten and while he's got the love of this young woman, she's eventually going to see through him. He only has one way in life and that's how he wins, that's how he becomes the hero of his story, if he wins this bet because he knows people and he knows he's right.
So despite all the warning signs, despite everything else, he puts it all on the line for the thrill. It mostly plays out as expected, it's a thriller movie with his girlfriend staging a massive coup to get to the casino and hide from the goons while it pays off. It's thrilling and for a second he thinks he may have made this all go away like a fairytale, but reality strikes and his brother in law figures out the reality of hiring these goons.
I like how raw it is, I feel like I'm in Fifth and Sixth Avenue and I'm watching this train wreck play out.
My only gripe is that the Safdie brothers released another movie called Good Time two years prior which was very similar and actually superior. It was the movie that got me to really appreciate Robert Pattinson as an actor and I think he's really going to turn heads with Tenent, if he didn't already in Lighthouse.
But yeah, Sandler's best acting performance of all-time in a nice hyper-realistic movie.

My favorite part was The Weekend just randomly popping in and fucking his girlfriend. It was kind of dumb but I laughed. And Elsa is great. One of the best princesses Disney produced. And Idina Menzel is great voicing her.

The Weeknd's appearance wasn't random, Julia mentions him in an earlier scene. We're led to believe that Julia is just a flooezy mooching off of Howard, but she's actually pretty perceptive, calling The Weeknd's rise in popularity before he'd hit it big in 2015. She also didn't have sex with him, they did cocaine together, but Julia truly loves Howard which is why she plays along with his daring last gambit.
She's actually an interesting character because ordinarily she'd be the first person to turn against the protaganist in a movie. Of all the characters, she's the diamond in the rough.

Neither made my list. I know a lot of you love Big Daddy, but it didn't blow the wind up my skirt.
Uncut Gems was interesting. I think I need to rewatch it to get a better feeling about it. I had the same reaction to Training Day. The first time I watched it I didn't know whether I liked it or not. So I watched it a second time and I thought 'this is a great movie'. I think Uncut Gems would be the same, I just haven't made the move to rewatch it yet.
I actually think Sandler is like Robin Williams in that many underestimate him as a serious actor, but when he is, he shows he is more than capable of doing more than just comedy.

The trailer does a fantastic job of capturing the mood of the movie. I made the Wrestler comparison, which has a lot of similarities, but Uncut Gems doesn't play itself off like an old dog being put out of it's misery.
While we're talking Safdies, Good Time maybe my favourite thriller with an even bigger scumbag than Howie (but with a far more noble goal).

Comparing Sandler to Williams is a bit of an over-stretch. I said like in that regard. Williams is comic genius and my world is a little less bright without him in it. I wouldn't say the same of Sandler.

I wouldn't say the same of Sandler. Gotcha, and OK. 100% agree with this, as well as the previous statement based on the clarification. It's weird... I don't hate Adam Sandler at all. Probably like him more than most? But the squash job being executed on Stiller coupled with the hate rain pouring down on Zoolander is making me so mad I'm confusing it for Sandler hate. This countdown has been so weird like that. I swear... If that piece of trash Water Boy makes this overall countdown and Something About Mary doesn't... so help me Like Button.

It would’ve probably made my list as my second favorite movie with Ben Stiller in it but it would have been close. (Number one though: Cable Guy. Yeah I really don’t like Ben Stiller) Cable Guy is actually great though.
