I thought about GI Jane because it was pretty infamous when it came out , mainly because the woman on the Striptease cover shaved her head and got grimy. Striptease was monumental at the time though , it wasn’t a good movie by any means but she got the highest payday ever for an actress at the time and did well enough at the box office whereas G.I. Jane was an infamous flop.

Ghost didn't make my list but damn it it SHOULD have. I absolutely LOVE Ghost it's the only romance movie I watch EVERY time it comes on. As UT pointed out Patrick Swayze could do absolutely NO wrong during this time, and Whoopi Goldberg was having a pretty decent run in her own right. Demi Moore is probably the weakest part of the movie, but I still think she put in an acceptable performance and accomplished what she needed to do. She was particularly good in the scene where Sam slides the penny up the door. If I had thought about it Carl would have made my villain list, there are few things as despicable as a best friend that stabs you in the back, especially with fatal consequences. Anyway I must agree with the general consensus so far. Ghost is awesome and is a worthy addition to this list. Moore also had/has a great ability to cry, not only on cue but singularly out of either eye. I read that was a huge reason she got the gig. It sounds silly but she is a great crier in that movie and the one eyed tear is pretty synonymous with the movie. I think she works because she is a perfect third behind Swayze and Whoopi. You go with someone like a Meg Ryan there and she might be too big. Demi had a run in the 80s but was cooling off a bit.

What happened to Swayze?
Someone like Costner's fall is well-known. Mega-star after The Untouchables (1987), Field of Dreams (1989), Dances with Wolves (1990), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), JFK (1991) and The Bodyguard (1992). Then his Wyatt Earp (1994) bombed after Tombstone had come out the year before. Then Waterworld (1995), despite actually making money in the end, was seen as a flop before even coming out because it went way over budget and was the most expensive film of all time. Then his second-directed film (after Dances with Wolves), The Postman (1997), was a huge flop and that was it for him as a big-time star.
Swayze had Dirty Dancing (1987), which became a shock hit ($215m box office on $5m budget), then Ghost (1990) grossed over half a billion on a $22m budget. Then Point Break (1991) was a pretty successful action film, especially considering it came out a week after T2. But then what? I don't know any of the films he did after that until he showed up as the paedo motivational speaker in Donnie Darko (2001). Did he have a shit agent? Did he pick the wrong films? Did he not want to get typecast? Seems crazy that no one stuck him in another romantic film in the first half of the 90s.

He made some weird choices , Too Wong Fu is a bit of a cult classic though. Aside from that there’s a huge downfall and odd roles.
He might have been the biggest star in movies for that three year run. It’s got to be hard to keep that momentum - especially if you’re getting typecast and make one or two bad choices.

I think the action flicks did him in. I was watching a show on Netflix called 'The Movies that Made Us' and one of the episodes was dedicated to Dirty Dancing. They reported he was in massive pain when shooting and that the last scene almost crippled him due to his bad knee. Not sure if that's what the issue was but he had issues standing on it for long periods, etc. I've read too that there was a horse back riding incident where he was injured and that he struggled with alcoholism, but who knows for sure but him.

It’s just weird because he was one of those rare stars and was a sex symbol whom women fawned over but was badass and cool enough to where guys weren’t overtly threatened and wanted have a drink with. Very few guys pull that off , hell as evident by the love by the guys in this thread for a “romance” movie - he was one of a kind.
Road House will always be a Top 10 - 15 movie of mine and Ghost is in there too in the Top 100. Point Break isn’t quite as high for me but it’s great and I respect the shit out of Dirty Dancing.
Brad Pitt has a lot of that same aura too. Only he’s had a far more sustained career and I’m not positive as big as he is - if he’s ever reached quite the heights of Swayze from 87-91..

For my money, Dirty Dancing is his defining role. We probably watch it three times a year if not more. It definitely made my list and as far as I can remember it was his only movie to do so. As feel good end scenes go.. there aren’t too many better than the last dance.
Update. Not only was it not his only movie on my list.. it wasn’t even the highest ranked. And while his performance in the other isn’t anything on the level of DD.. I definitely think the best movie Patrick was in was the Outsiders. But.. less because of him so I’d understand it not be on his Mount Rushmore.

Dirty Dancing was his star making role and launched him into superstardom and brought things into play like Ghost - both were pretty similar at the box office as well. I prefer Ghost but Dirty Dancing certainly has it's case and was probably the more important movie to his career.
As for Almost Famous , one of the bigger shocks of the countdown for me. I thought this movie would be a lock for the Top 50 given it's cult status and love that PW has for it in previous countdowns. To barely even crack the Top 150 made me had to triple check my math.
I like the most , it was one of those movies I put off forever because there was no way it could live up to its reputation , I was glad when I finally did because it was awesome. I don't quite put it on the same level as others but I could definitely see why others loved it so much and could easily see myself being the same had I watched it earlier and watched it for years.
Kate Hudson is mesmerizing as Penny Lane and showed some serious chops , that apparently faded away with time. The cast is a great ensemble and having people like McDormand and Philip Seymour Hoffman as bit players only lends to the movies credibility.
It's on everyone's Mt. Rushmore aside from Hoffman and McDormand I think. Especially the main casts.

Like others have said Ghost is a great all around movie and one that I somewhat underrate because of it's chick flick reputation. It has some outstanding fantasy sequences and the supporting cast put in great performances. Definitely on Demi Moore's Mount Rushmore where I would put Striptease, St. Elmo's Fire and Disclosure right along side.
Almost Famous I've only caught in segments, I like what I've seen though.

35. Ghost- I correctly guessed this from UT's hints yesterday but forgot to post. Speaking of UT, he, Big Pete, and thereallt beat me to it with their series of great Ghost posts.....A series of posts so good it has me thinking I should've ranked Ghost even higher. Ghost has a little something for everyone. It's famous for being a romance. The pottery scene being particularly iconic. But it also works as a comedy, murder mystery, and even a horror film as touched on by JTJ. Ghost features great babyfaces, hateable heels, and character development when necessary like Oda Mae's transition from charlatan to unwitting legit medium and the trials and tribulations of Ghost Sam. Never thought about until reading your posts, but Demi Moore is definitely the weakest part of this movie simply because everybody else associated with it (including Hermit's Hermits and The Righteous Brothers) got hugely over with my brother and I after first watching it in the early 90s and revisiting it many, many times after that.... Patrick Swayze- Obvious Legend Whoopi Goldberg- Put it this way. I was a Sister Act fan. That doesn't happen without seeing Whoopi kill it as Oda Mae Brown/Rita Miller in Ghost. For me, she was one of the two best parts of this movie along with... Vincent Schiavelli as the Mickey to Sam Wheat's Rocky. Always got a kick out of the scenes where he trains Sam in the ghostly arts. For like 2 decades my brother and I referred to this great character actor with a unique look simply as "The Get Off My Train Guy" when he popped up in other stuff, which was often. Tony Goldwyn as Carl Bruner- Agree with LT in that he's an all time great movie heel. It was still real to my brother who hated this guy on sight whenever he appeared in anything else. (only other person I can think of this applying to is River Phoenix for his role in Gladiator) Willie Lopez of Prospect Place was an above average goon as one of you already mentioned. More and more I am starting to think Pete got it right with his placement of Ghost. Fun Fact: I never even heard of Almost Famous until it kept getting brought up on PW :$

Almost Famous was good but it did not live up to expectations, which to be fair might have been impossible given the glowing reviews it got.

Agree with your Rushmore’s , though Road House cannot be replaced. Moore’s is Ghost , Striptease , A Few Good Men and probably St. Elmos Fire. She doesn’t have a great IMDB but Ghost made her a superstar for a bit. i'll take that but replace St.Elmo's fire with Disclosure. She made a great bitchy heel in that one.

And it's Mt Rushmore time. Patrick Swayze is a definite yes. Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Point Break, and Roadhouse. If I were to substitute a movie I would put Next of Kin instead of Roadhouse. It's a yes for Whoopi Goldberg as well (Ghost, Jumping Jack Flash, The Color Purple and The Lion King) I would say it's definitely a yes for Demi Moore as well, but I can't come up with a Mt.Rushmore for her. No Sister Act!?!?

Sister Act is a lock. I’d even put it ahead of Lion King.
Don’t overlook Sister Act , #3 movie at the box office in 1992 with Whoopi on the poster and that was HER movie she sold.
Lion King is a treasure but Whoopi wasn’t selling that movie , hell she was probably 6th or 7th billed.

I honestly forgot Whoopi was even involved with Lion King. Sister Act, Color Purple and Jumping Jack Flash would join Ghost on her Mount Rushmore.

I had no idea anyone even remotely considered Whoopi to be a great actor. I thought she was more celebrity than actor.
Apart from voice acting, which she seems to be great at...she was one of the worst characters in Rat Race, and I think that's the only thing I've seen her in. But here she is being talked about all over a Top 200 list. This surprises me.

Oh, I just remembered she was the bartender in Star Trek. A minor role, but I guess she did pretty good. I always thought those scenes were weird though as she seemed out of place with the rest of the show. It seemed like the scenes were designed around her rather than her fulfilling a role. But they were unique and cool, as most scenes in Star Trek are.

Ouch two movies in my top ten going this early. Almost Famous was my number four, I’ve loved it since it came out. I really need to watch the bootleg version they put out to see how the extended cut plays, but it’s terrific. Funny, heartwarming, and the kind of small scale, low stakes movie with a decent budget that is hard to make now.
Moneyball is Sorkin pitching at an expert level and Brad Pitt knocking it out of the park. Everyone is terrific in that movie, but Pitt being a movie star is the best feature.

You watch it yet 🤯?! Of course not. I may do a breakdown later , but Man on Fire is amazing. I shockingly (to myself) dropped it all the way to #9 on my list and now feel bad - it's one of my favorite movies ever and I could watch it anytime. My favorite revenge flick , my favorite man on a mission flick , my favorite Denzel , my favorite Scott - it's just perfect to me and the exact movie you'd want to seek out if you were in the mood for a revenge action saga. It's funny and a bit annoying to see The Equalizer love today , I mean it's a good movie but it's pretty much just an older Denzel doing a variation of Man on Fire and doing it without Scott , without the Fanning relationship and without the awesome cinematography that sets Man on Fire apart. If you haven't seen it (COUGH 🤯 COUGH) , do it. If only for the Walken quote alone - which might be the best quote in revenge movie history.

I don't know what it is about comedians but they tend to step up to the plate very well when asked to do dramatic roles.

Well, slap my ass and call me Sally! I thought for sure one of the votes for Man on Fire was from me, but I checked my list and nope. I forgot it which is a HUGE oversight on my part. I love this movie. It's my favorite Denzel movie and had I not had my head up my ass would have ranked it around #40 (MAYBE higher). It's not one I re-watch often, but I do. It doesn't follow my 'normal' re-watch model, so IMO that's a testament to how good it is.
