I'd probably take Ghostface and several other including Chucky and the Saw doll over Leatherface as far as mainstream appeal for horror Mr. Rushmore icons. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel Leatherface isn't super over with gen pop. He's simply way down the list when I think of the #4 alongside the big 3.

Emperor, what do you think about Scream anyway? You seem content to sit on the sidelines while UT and LT duke it out but aren’t you the biggest horror fan here? You used to watch nothing but horror films. I'm on team thereallt, but I am not as strongly against Scream as he is, so there's no point wasting energy on it. He's got enough anti-Scream energy to cover a dozen haters.

I take exception to Emp being the biggest horror fan here , he’s got the market cornered and I always enjoy his views but there are very few American horror movies I haven’t seen from 1970 on at this point. There are obvious holes in my viewing though and I’m sure the same for him.

Leather face doesn’t have the mainstream appeal as the others for sure. Also doesn’t help his own case that he’s part of the whole - his entire family are the villains and he’s just the ultimate boss at the end.

His first appearance in the original is one of those legit holy shit moments in horror IMO.

Regarding the credibility of Ghostface, I can see both sides of the argument. The idea that a murderer could be literally anybody in a costume - your best friend, your next door neighbour, that weird guy from school - is a terrifying concept.
However Ghostface can come across as pretty laughable at times, precisely because he's a regular human being, not a supernatural or near-supernatural figure. The Scary Movie parody really does shine a light on that.

He was BY FAR a better horror villain than Ghostface ever was, or will ever be. He spent the majority of his run as a clown. Ironic that you call Scream CW when for a ton of Freddys run he was known at MTV Freddy. And if you want to keep it to the OG Freddy , he gets his ass kicked too and Nancy fucks him up. He’s a coward.

Very little tension, very little atmosphere. Lots of goofy meta references and self-parody. I honestly laughed more times than was actually unsettled. The only scene in Scream that really captured all that was the opener. It was all downhill from there.

Regardless of Cravens inspiration for the movie - no one has ever been killed in their dreams and dies in real life as a result of the dream murder.

The only scene in Scream that really captured all that was the opener. It was all downhill from there. That is my take. The last time I watched it, maybe six months ago, I couldn't take the awful dialogue and all the meta-weirdness. Quit after maybe 30 minutes. Opening scene is phenomenal though.

There is tension and mystery throughout , you don’t ever know when you’re watching the killer and who’s in danger.

Execution is part of it, but in horror fiction I always lean towards the supernatural as being more scary. There are essentially no limitations. Ghosts are terrifying when presented correctly, as Japan has demonstrated time and time again. Being killed in your dreams is also terrifying. Everyone has had an awful nightmare at some point in their life. Literally anything can happen in a dream, and there's nothing you can do about it. Dreams occur at the point you are most vulnerable - in your sleep. Nightmare on Elm Street preys on that fear in the perfect way.

I didn’t mean to stop that point. The entire party scene and realized the delay on the camera is phenomenal suspense as well.
The scene with Sidney in the bathroom too.

Considering you admitted Scream was your first slasher you're not very well qualified to speak on this.
Scream WAS NOT my first slasher film and I grew up on far better ones. So did most of my friends of the same generation. And by and large most of us saw Scream as a massive disappointment. Sure we were looking for a new franchise like everyone else, but then Scream dropped and when we saw it we were all like "That's the best you can do...Seriously???" Scream actually made me stop watching horror altogether for a while. I did watch I Know What You Did Last Summer, and while it was a marked improvement, it still felt lacking to me.

Except that Nancy figures rather quickly what is happening and even that you can pull Freddy into the real world with you where he is nothing more than a weak ass coward. Everyone has their own fears and I respect that , I don’t particularly believe in ghosts or paranormal so I don’t instantly find them scary. You are right that when done right it can be terrifying - but IMO so if Ghostface. He opens the movie brutally murdering two kids , even gutting one in from of his girlfriend. And the very fact that it’s the expected star of the movie lends to the suspense of the rest of the movie. Never has the opening scene of a horror movie came out from the beginning and told you ANYTHING can happen. Anyone can be the killer and anyone can die. Which is why Ghostface is to me , as effective as any horror villain.

Given he's also a perfectly normal guy, I have the option of FIGHTING back. He's not implacable or menacing like Michael Myers or Leatherface. I would shit my pants if I saw either one of them coming after me. Ghosts?? Ain't shit you can do about ghosts. Or something haunting you in your dreams so bad that you can die.

A horror community that still loves Scream for everything it was.

Also lock your doors and call the cops , like they did in the movie. Don’t mean shit when the killer is your girlfriend or best friend whom you don’t suspect in the slightest. It’s not like he just comes and knocks on your door in costume and asks to come in.

Yeah Casey was definitely laughing in the beginning. So was Tatum until she got crushed , even Winkler directly addresses the making light of the killer before he’s hung from the goalpost - a direct commentary on that silly POV.
