After previously talking about Duggan's slightly raw deal in terms of big matches on TV, I got to thinking of others who may have gotten short-changed.
For some reason
The Berzerker came to mind and in terms of where
🤯 is up to with Superstars, he is just about to be gone, with his last appearance in a battle royal on the 2/15/93 RAW.
His TV debut was on the 2/17/91 Wrestling Challenge as The Viking. Fuji became his manager on 3/10/91 Challenge. Think the first TV appearance with name change to Berzerker was 3/26/91 PTW.
After months of random opponents, his first regular house show opponent was Snuka in July/August. Snuka would hang around until February 1992, but they probably should have gotten rid of him sooner. Maybe they could've had Berzerker put him out of the Fed to get him over. Really, that would've been a cool thing to have had Taker do. Have Mania VII be Snuka's last match. Maybe Taker could've brought out a casket for the big show and put Snuka in it post-match. Would've fit well at the time, since he was talking about burying Warrior after his career was to be ended by Macho that night, to set up their feud.
SummerSlam 1991: Beating Snuka here could've definitely happened, but this was such a stacked show that it is hard to justify adding this. Could be billed as a battle of wildmen.
He had a short house show run with Tornado when he was being winded down. This is where the cancellation of SNME hurts as this is a match that you could've seen on an autumn show. He then moved on to facing The Hammer.
Survivor Series 1991: In a Series tag match opposite Tornado, but it was mainly about Slaughter taking the kayfabe-injured Anvil's spot on Duggan's team. Steamboat was supposed to be on the face side (feuding with Skinner at the time) but left and was replaced by the repackaged Tito Santana. Big Bully Busick was supposed to be on the heel team but left and was replaced by Hercules (back as a singles after Roma's departure in October). The faces pumped the heels 4-0 with Duggan pinning Berzerker to end the match. Feels needless to pin him at this point. Could've had him dump Kerry to the outside and do his dive over the ropes on to him and just HUSS! until they are both counted out. Protects both to an extent and puts Berzerker over as a madman.
Post-Series, he was on house shows against Tornado before moving over to Davey Boy.
Royal Rumble 1992: Given that a big part of his character was throwing people over the top rope and winning by countout, he should definitely have had a featured spot in the Rumble. Have him toss a few people out in quick succession while Heenan goes crazy on commentary that this guy is going to win and hoping he stays away from Flair. Maybe even have him lose control and do his jump out on to the third person he eliminates and just husses without even realising he has eliminated himself. Continues to get him over as completely mad.
Continued to work with Bulldog in Jan and Feb, before moving on to Crush (who would not return on TV repackaged until May) as main opponent in March.
WrestleMania VIII: He was supposed to face Davey Boy here, but the match was cut for time. I remember their December MSG match being a fun sprint and they could've had the same here on a stadium show. They could have done with an angle heading in though.
Post-Mania, Berzerker feuds with Taker and finally gets an angle, famously trying to stab Taker with his sword. On 7/6/92 PTW, Berzerker won a 40-man Battle Royal, so they used that part of his gimmick in a positive way. Unfortunately, about 6 weeks out from SummerSlam (presumably due to poor business), they shuffled almost every feud around and changed Taker's SummerSlam opponent to Kamala, even though he was going to feud with him after SummerSlam so they had to do a non-finish.
SummerSlam 1992: Berzerker ended up losing a nothing match to Tatanka here, which was one of three cut from the US PPV that was aired days after the event. Absolutely zero reason to not do the Taker blowoff here. Berzerker could've had 2 stadium matches with stars, Davey and Taker, in 1992. He ended up with only one against Tatanka, which he lost in 5 mins, and was shown on a September PTW.
Berzerker did not work much between Slam and Series, but his main opponent was Crush. Berzerker lost a WWF Title match to Bret on the 11/9/92 PTW during their push to make Hart the "fightingest champion of all time".
Survivor Series 1992: Berzerker was not on the show and Crush was in a dark match against Repo. Given that they moved to mainly singles matches on this show, they could definitely have run Crush/Berz. Again, could've done with an angle.
Worked with Crush, Tito, Duggan post-Series before moving on to Backlund in early 1993.
Royal Rumble 1993: Like I would've wanted the previous year, they could've given him a little spotlight role. Have a few eliminations, rather than just the one (Virgil) he got. He was eliminated by Taker, which isn't a bad choice. Could've had Backlund do it to get over his freakish strength.
