Leafs vs Bruins in Boston tonight with the playoffs just around the corner.
I’m expecting chaos. I hope I’m wrong.

The Boston commentator calling that a grab to the ear is hilarious.
Rangers are now 9-3 in their last 12 against playoff teams after a solid win over Pittsburgh - so much for that idea at the start of the season that they couldn't beat good teams.

Another OT win for the Rangers - this team is so fun. I'm banging the drum a bit but Copp, Vatrano and Motte have made such a difference to our 5v5 play, we've gone from 1.87 per game to 3.6 since the deadline. 18 even strength goals which is the most in the league during that time.
Only downside tonight was another bad performance by Georgiev. He was really the sole reason it wasn't a relatively easy victory.

This is pretty cool:
You have to go back to 1993 for the last time there was this many.

After teasing us with a week of big wins, the Leafs once again Leaf'd it up. Blowing a 5-1 lead, to lose 7-6 in OT.

Tyson Nash should be fired just for using the term skill it up. Engaging in a fight with a player that doesn't want to is bullshit. Get that garbage out of the game.

Could tell the Leafs were going to cough up the lead after Florida made it 5-2 because they looked completely gassed. Then Gudas gets a SH goal from like the blueline on Kallgren. You just knew it was coming. There was too much game left and they couldn't hold on.
Forcing OT is a big deal though. 3/4 points on a back-to-back in Florida is no easy feat this season. I'll take that.

Braden Schneider is rapidly rising up my favourite player rankings. He's looked really comfortable at the NHL level all season and the arrival of Justin Braun to provide a bit of competition for his place in the team seems to have spurred him on even more.
He lays a huge clean hit, then wins the fight, drawing a penalty in the process which the Rangers then scored on - and the team never looked back from there. And then in the postgame we get this nugget!

On a related note: is there anything more annoying than when someone lays a nice clean hit and someone has to immediately start a fight? Why the fuck is that a thing now? How about keep your head up and don’t give up your positioning so you don’t get blown up?
EDIT: oh my god Schneider beat the fuck out of that guy

If you guys want to make some easy money tonight, it was reported that Oettinger was offered the start against Toronto tonight and he instead offered it to Wedgewood, who waved it off and said no, but is starting anyway.
I have never been more certain the Leafs are getting shut out in my life.

As it stands the Rangers will be playing Pittsburgh in the first round of the playoffs and having beaten them three straight times I would be very confident in that series. The ESPN broadcast was brutal tonight acting like the game didn't count because Crosby wasn't playing.

CLINCHED
51 in 50 for Auston “MVP” Matthews. There was a moment in the game when he leveled someone then the crowd erupted in M-V-P chants and I nearly came.
Huge defensive effort to close out the game.
Ugghhhhh my god I need this team to succeed this year. If they go out first round again I’m going to drown in whiskey. I swear to god.

Much better to clinch with a win rather than what another team did I think RT! Really disappointed that we have seemingly lost Tyler Motte for the rest of the season, he had made a great impact particularly on the PK. Fortunately Rooney is back to cover things on the fourth line.

Kreider's got more goals than McDavid now. He doesn't do a whole lot else but absolutely dominates with that net front position on the power play. He'll probably have one of those long stretches where he completely disappears, but really he should be scoring 50 goals this season. By gawd he did it! 8 games left to get to Jagr's team record of 55.

Really interesting thread from former player Chris Pronger on how much a player generally takes home. This is really eye opening. The NHL is the lowest paying of all the major leagues and that should definitely change. It’s no wonder literally every player needs to book endorsements or signings forever after they retire.

Athletes going broke is a fascinating subject to me. I'm always down for stories about it. I also love learning how businesses work behind-the-scenes. I've never heard of that escrow before.

Athletes going broke is a fascinating subject to me. I'm always down for stories about it. I also love learning how businesses work behind-the-scenes. I've never heard of that escrow before. The NHL especially fascinates me because of how much lower the players are paid compared to other leagues. The lowest paid players in the NFL, NBA and MLB are (generally speaking) making more than like 90% of NHL players. NHL players are almost forced to be smarter with their money because of how little they make compared to other leagues (again generally speaking…I know they still take home hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars every year they play). A lot of Canadian NHL players seem to invest in real estate and business. A good chunk of high end real estate here in British Columbia is owned by NHL players because they can afford to buy it while their income is good and know it’ll only appreciate in value and can sell it off once they retire. Sure some of them are millionaires like Carey Price or Dany Heatley or Shea Weber (all players that currently own mansions on the lake here in Kelowna) but I know for a fact one condo-style resort building here was 90% owned by players on the Flames, Oilers and Canucks in the mid-2000’s. They all sold their units to rich people for a profit after they retired. Connor Carrick started a coffee brand, Zach Hyman is a published children’s author, plenty of players have sponsorship deals to pad their income, etc etc. It baffles me when I hear about a player in another league that signs a $200 million dollar contract going broke 5-10 years after retirement. Like how did you even manage to do that?

It is pretty ridiculous how little they are paid compared to other sports, especially in a game that requires you to sacrifice your body. A middling MLB reliever gets paid as much as an elite hockey star - that ain't right. With that said, a guy on that contract is still making as much money in one year as your average joe makes in a lifetime, so I can't feel too sorry.
On another note, listening to the TNT panel talk about the Rangers before tonight's game has been an eye-opening experience. When you follow a team closely it really shows when people have no idea what they're talking about. You'd think Adam Fox was the only guy on the team. Oh and why do we always have to start the game 25 minutes past the hour?

The Pronger breakdown is cool. Just can't "feel bad" for someone in his example who is net $2.8 M. Don't forget the "commuter" vehicle for $75 k. These guys live a luxurious life I can only dream of. Incredible houses in the best neighborhoods. For the scrubs at the bottom, minimum salary is $750 k. Plus, is there a pension in the NHL? In the MLB you receive a pension after 10 years.
