The Packers clearly have already begun cleaning out their lockers and are ready for this abysmal season to end. And the front office is already putting in some work.
News broke this morning that the Packers will not be bringing "Teflon" Dom Capers back next season and even in my hungover state - I jumped for all kinds of joy. What a perfect ending to a shitty year as a Packer fan - that fucking knucklehead is no more. Now on the other hand , early reports suggest the Packers might have interest in Vic Fangio when/if the Bears fire John Fox. Not sure I love that movie , he's a solid coordinator but I was hoping for more of a whole scheme change and I like the potential of our personal in a 4-3.
On Friday we resigned Davante Adams , which was my most pressing issue this offseason after getting rid of Capers. Adams is our best receiver and one of the more underrated guys in the NFL right now in my opinion. The numbers of the deal are whatever - we couldn't afford to just let him walk. Cobb or Jordy are going to have to take a pay cut though because no way can either of them be brought back on their price tag - as our top three receivers right now I think would make over 40 million dollars. Cobb is in the last year of his deal and may be the easiest to move. We also have some young guys I really like.

The first completion of Patrick Mahomes career started me wondering what we will get for Alex Smith this offseason.
(The third completion of his career was an awful throw for an INT)

A little more of my opinions on the Packers offseason , position group by position group.
Quarterback - Obviously Rodgers will be back , but under the radar with Hundley coming in was the fact that it was his contract year. I guess him playing as terrible as he did might allow the Packers to keep him on the cheap but personally I'd rather we just move on. I liked what I seen of Callahan enough and wouldn't mind the Packers bringing in more competition for the backup spot.
Running Backs - I actually love what the Packers have in this group right now. Aaron Jones looked legit when he was healthy , Jamal Williams is annoying to watch but does show some flashes. I think he and Jones would be a good two headed monster. Ty Montgomery is going to be a weird one going forward - I don't think he should come back as running back but rather we should just movie him back to receiver and possibly replace Cobb in our offense. They are similar enough players and Montgomery costs like 10% of what Cobb does.
Wide Receivers - I already touched on it , but right now I'd expect Adams , Jordy , Trevor Davis and Montgomery to be back. That leaves one of two spots up for grabs. I wouldn't be shocked to see the Packers take a receiver high in the draft , especially one with the speed to take the tops off of defenses as Jordy just isn't that guy anymore.
Tight Ends - Bennett and Kendricks were complete busts as free agents and this position needs an overhaul. Richard Rodgers is fine but not spectacular , another position I wouldn't mind seeing the Packers target on day two of the draft. As a Badgers fan I would LOVE to see Fumagali in the Green and Gold.
Offensive Line - I don't hate this group at all. The entire left side of the line is really good - great. Evans is aging and had a solid year but might need to be replaced and Bulaga is often injured. Justin McCray is the name to watch , he played four different position on the line this year due to injuries and I thought played great. I would love to see him get a chance to start next year at RG.
Defensive Line - I don't know what to think of this group. I love Daniels , Clark is a good players as well but its so tough to judge this defense because of Capers defense. I feel like we got a lot of good players put in bad situations. Adding depth every season is something the Packers do though , I just hope it isn't early in the draft.
Linebackers - I've wanted to cut Matthews for years now , he showed flashes this season but still always seemed to be hurt. That's where steroids get you though I suppose. Perry is a good player and Fackrell flashed as well - I like some of our young guys here but again it's hard to completely know what we have because of Capers coaching. I would love to see a great athlete drafted here if we stick with the 3-4.
Cornerbacks - Randall is terrible in coverage but a good playmaker and I don't know what to do with that. I thought King played really well and should return as our #1 next season. House was a leader but doesn't have the makeup to be a #1 corner in this league but could be decent depth. Another position I'd love to see some resources put into though.
Safeties - Haha Clinton Dix had his worst season as a pro , but I chalk that up to Capers. Morgan Burnett is probably our most important free agent now that Adams has resigned and I don't know if I want him back or not. An important player who does everything for us , one of our biggest leaders but I feel as if he's going to cost too much. Personally I think it'd be interesting to let him walk and move Randall to a safety spot while Clinton Dix plays closer to the LOS.

With Palmer retired I know another older number one draft pick QB they can come after.

With Palmer retired I know another older number one draft pick QB they can come after. m Assuming we’re on the same page with this one, that was my prediction also. Alex Smith just seems to be a perfect fit for Arizona and their obsession with old QBs. He wouldn’t be a bad fit.

Depends on the coach. Arians wouldn’t like his hesitations to throw deep. But I’m all in on a trade war between Arizona, Cleveland and NYJ for Alex. I want another second rounder at least.

Yeah and I read they were looking to keep their aggressive downfield passing attack even after Arians left. He would of been a terrible fit with Arians and depending if they go the same route - he wouldn't be a good fit at all in Zona. It could be interesting what happens with Alex - the Jets make some sense but sooner or later they HAVE to start planning for the future and Cleveland just isn't in a position to be giving away higher draft picks for a quarterback who isn't going to take them anywhere soon.
The Bronco's could make sense but that trade isn't happening within the division. The Redskins as a stop gay depending on what happens with Cousins.
I could see the Jaguars try and make a move if Bortles turns back into Bortles in the first round. They have an potential dynasty type defense and Smith would be the perfect quarterback for them to just ride that defense for the next couple seasons.

Packers hired Gutekunst as their new GM yesterday , I was hoping for Wolf but really glad it wasn't Ball. Then promoted Ball to Exec VP of football operations which should of at least gone to Wolf - now we are probably going to lose Wolf. Ugh. Oh well.
Also welcome to the Bills , Panthers , Rams and Chiefs.
Despite being a playoff team , the Bills have a shit ton of needs. They could use someone at just about every position.
The Panthers need a receiver and some offensive line help IMO.
The Rams could always use some offensive linemen. Secondary pieces wouldn't hurt either.
The Chiefs needs IMO - probably another target aside from Hill. An interior linemen and every level of the defense could use some help.

The coaching youth movement in the NFL continues with the Bears hiring Matt Nagy to be their HC. Nagy did a nice job as the OC for the Chiefs over two seasons, and becomes the sixth former Andy Reid assistant to be an active head coach. He looks like an ideal mentor to get Mitch Trubisky going in his second year, much like Doug Pederson and Sean McVay did with Wentz and Goff respectively.

I'm never concerned over a Bears coaching hire , it's just something in my DNA. I don't know a lot about Nagy other than he was a hot name in the hiring processes like a lot of Reid assistants have been in the past.
None of it's going to matter if they don't get Trubisky anything to work with , the Bears receiving corps is probably the worst in the NFL.

Receiver is really their only glaring weakness though. The defence is good, especially if they are able to keep hold of Fangio, the o-line is solid, they've got a proven running back in Howard, and a playmaker in Tarik Cohen (who has an obvious comparison to Tyreek Hill). Grab Cortland Sutton or Calvin Ridley in the draft and things look pretty good on paper.

If Trubisky develops. I have a hard time believing that a team as bad as the Bears were this season are a receiver away. I mean it will help tremendously and help the maturation of Trubisky but I don't think they are in for a quick turnaround. And the NFC North is a pretty tough division these days with the Vikings defense and the Lions always hovering around a playoff spot.
I'm still not big on their secondary as a whole. Even their linebackers don't really scare me aside from the dirty ass Trevaithan.

Stability at the position for a franchise that may have not had it since they came back and they have plenty of draft picks so losing one good one won’t hurt. Anyway the Chiefs need to trade Alex for something, and use that something and the 17 million in savings to get a stable backup QB and lots of defensive pieces like a corner and a pass rusher. Not sure how easy the Hali or Derrick Johnson contracts are to get out of but it’s be a good idea to get out of those too. They are replacing most of their offensive staff with Nagy already hired and Childress quitting, so we may as well make it a clean sweep and get rid of Sutton too.

He has a solid record as a DC: Jets: 2009 - 1st YPG, 1st PPG 2010 - 3rd YPG, 6th PPG 2011 - 5th YPG, 20th PPG 2012 - 8th YPG, 20th PPG Bills: 2013 - 10th YPG, 20th PPG and actually had the Browns travelling halfway decently in his first season as HC which is more than most can say.

The Seahawks fired Darrel Bevell today. IMO, it should have been done three years ago. They should've done it the day after losing the Super Bowl, after Bevell called one of the dumbest plays ever late in the game.

Tom Cable's gone as well which was also overdue considering how awful Seattle's line play has been for years now (and the fact that he is a bad person).
No real surprise that the Seahawks are looking to overhaul after missing the playoffs, but probably more importantly, the fact that the Legion of Boom days may be over with Avril and Chancellor possibly retiring and Sherman's future still in the air.

There's a lot of 20th in points allowed there - which matters to me more than yards. It's not so much against Pettine as much as I wanted a philosophy change , maybe a scheme change. He runs a more aggressive version of what we already had and I'm not sure that's what's going to succeed in Green Bay with the personnel. Only time will tell , if he can make us even a borderline Top 10 defense , I'll be ecstatic.

Rex controlled his defenses ALWAYS with the Jets, that was a knock on him as he allowed that dimwit Schottenheimer ruin this offense. Pettine and Dennis Thurman didn't input very much their time as DC with the Jets, Rex was hands on with that unit all the time.
Pettine is a snake, he went to the worst Jets beat writer(Manish Mehta) and dropped all of his mentor's baggage out in the media. That's why he got the boot after 2012.
