If I was going to be a conspiracy theorist, if these calls step up I am going to say this was the play from the beginning.
To have Trump retire and shuffle the deck chairs to get who they want into the Whitehouse prior to the election.
Doing it after the Democratic primary give the DNC control of who lands there, rather than an ugly series of primaries where their preferred candidate gets murdered.

The only thing I don't know... Not being American I guess, what would have to happen is VP steps down and they nominate a new VP then Biden stands down.
If that happened one month out from the General election, would whoever assumed the Presidency, would that be classed still as their first term, even if it was only a month? Or could they seek election twice?

Sorry it is pretty unclear.
If Biden was to step down then Kamala becomes the President, there having already been a Democratic primary, Biden is the nominee.
If Kamala takes over as President she is automatically the nominee for the election.

The only way they can get anyone else as the candidate in the election is to make them VP, so that Biden can stand down and hand them the presidency.
I just wasn't clear if by doing that one month from the election, whether that would count as their first term meaning they could only have one full term as President.

The Democratic convention is in August. We haven’t run primaries because no one goes against the sitting President.

So at least as of today, Biden could drop out, Kamala would be President, and the nomination would be open.

I also think if we get into September and Biden suddenly passed, Kamala would be President but the DNC would still nominate a new candidate.

Note these wouldn’t count as a term for Kamala, so she’d be eligible for two more.

Nah, they could do it now. Either way, we’re past primaries and it’s all in the hands of delegates.

Trump was the clear winner tonight. Not because he performed that well, but because Joe Biden utterly embarrased himself. All Trump had to do was let him keep talking.

Most viral lie right now is Biden saying he’s supported by Border Patrol and them responding ONE MINUTE LATER saying they don’t and never will support Biden.

Where’s the fact checks on that? Why is PBS ignoring that?

I appreciate that. And I try … I genuinely try … to be someone that just calls it like I see it, and not try to excuse everything because my politics lean left or right (as best exemplified in this thread by Kid and c).

I struggle to see Biden actually stepping down, but I hope to hell he does. I could see Newsom being a lead candidate, but honestly, the governor of California - which has by and large lost its fucking mind - isn’t the best option in my opinion.

Def agree, if Pete was not gay he would be president.  IMO he is still the strongest Dems have right now.  I watched his congress hearing the other day and he is just great off the cuff.

Newsom is not a strong candidate.  A lot of dems hate him, particularly in California.  

For Incy, Dems are stuck with Biden.  We did the primary, people voted and he won.  If he were to step down, with Harris, DNC could legally replace him with whoever they wanted, but it would be seen as democrats bypassing democratic processes.   This would have to be done after the convention.  If done before the election, then Dean Phillips and Jason Palmer are still pretty much tied after Biden.  People kind of forget others did run against Biden and still kind of are in the race.  Both got delegates. 

I am certain we are losing this election and have been for about three months now.  Democrats expect everyone to come out and vote for Biden, but they refuse to rally around him and out progressive base seems intent on protesting every democrat unless they support severing all ties with Israel.  Dem messaging on what Biden has done has been awful as well.  

Best I see right now is still Biden taking the blue wall and getting 270, which allows for supreme court to award the election to Trump or a strong shot at the House throwing out one of the states triggering an alternate vote for the electoral vote election.

I dunno. It just seems like it'd be an admittance of defeat/sign of weakness to do that at this stage, but I've been wrong on here before.

Dems lost the election the minute they stood by Biden. I don't think people wanted to believe it was as bad as it was, but last night showed everyone how truly sad it is. And hey, it's natural. It's life, but rad is right, they had 4 years to plan and here.we.are. That's why I say there need to be an age limit. He needs to step down for the good of America.
