Figured I'd celebrated our 40th edition by giving 5 extra spots , not going to be a normal thing as my OCD is out of whack but for a one time thing I think it'll be fun. Speaking of my OCD , the formatting is still a work in progress - so it might be ugly for a few entries until I figure out what I like.
I don't have a lot to say about the Terminator franchise as a whole , it was never my thing.

Lets be real here.....Terminator is on this list strictly because of the first two movies, which are all time classics and IMO both in the top 5 action films of all-time. For that reason I put it at #9 on my list.
The 3rd movie was passable at best and the rest of the franchise is pure hot garbage. Sarah Connor Chronicles was pretty good though, fuck who ever got that canceled.

Agreed with LT. The first two movies make the franchise, but it is a great sci-fi story that has endured decades and gave Arnold Schwarzenegger arguably his biggest role. Ranked 8th on my list.

To me, it created an iconic character/monster and a story/universe that could be expanded upon. The first two movies were THAT great that they easily help to compensate for the badness to mediocrity at best of the rest of the franchise's entries.

Decided to put up two since we have a few extra at the end , and I was slapping myself for getting the View Askewverse because I didn't even consider it as a franchise until it started popping up on lists. It probably would have made #9 or #10 for me.
The most critically panned movie of the franchise is my favorite , Jay and Silent Bob was my introduction to the franchise so I kind of started out on the wrong end but I ended up going back and watching 5 of the 6 movies of the franchise and enjoyed them all enough. Clerks kicked it off but I still find everything after it to be a bit better - that doesn't mean it don't deserve all the credit in the world for what Smith was able to accomplish.
I really need to get around to watching Chasing Amy to finish the franchise off. All six movies probably deserve a run through from me if I'm being honest.

Of the VA movies I've seen (I think I've only neglected Dogma) I have quite liked. Although to me it's similar to the MCU where I'm not sure if it fits the definition of franchise. Can't deny it's placement though.
As far as Terminator... yeah never seen it. I'm actually going through all the countdowns and compiling a list of stuff I need to see. I've at least checked off the original Predator, so cut me some slack!

Had no idea this counted as a franchise. Certainly didn't think of it as one. It's an awesome unexpected shout. And mad props to Ness! Been meaning to do the same as far as creating such a list. And for knocking out the original Predator first, I'm proud of you; you got your priorities straight. Would love to see you drop a review of it (especially to get a mom's opinion of the OG Pred).

View Askewniverse is great. I don't understand where that silly universe name come from. I just think of these movies as Kevin Smith films. The first one I watched was Clerks, which I loathed. Then a year or two later I gave him another chance with Dogma, and I loved it. So much so that I went on to watch Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Chasing Amy, and Mallrats, in that order.
I wasn't so big on JaSBSB, but Chasing Amy is phenomenal and has a rare scene where Kevin Smith speaks, a surprisingly heart wrenching speech. Mallrats is really juvenile, not the kind of film I ought to like, but it has that unique Kevin Smith element of silliness that hits the spot. It's inferior to Dogma, but a pretty good film in its own right.
Is Jersey Girl part of this universe? That's one I haven't seen.

The name comes from Smith's production company being called View Askew. I never heard of it before this and doing a bit of research from it being on lists. Jersey Girl is not part of this universe though. Clerks , Clerks 2 , Dogma , Chasing Amy , Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob make up the six. Also Silent Bob speaks in Strike Back , it's not poetic or moving but it's one of the funniest parts IMO. THE SIGN ON THE BACK OF THE TRUCK SAYS CRITTERS OF HOLLYWOOD - YOU STUPID FUCK! Just out of nowhere and it really hits home. Also I think Will Ferrell is great in it - his second best cameo right behind Wedding Crashers.

Terminator didn't make my list due to the sharp drop-off after T2 and I haven't seen all of the VA movies though I never really thought of them as a franchise. I guess if this counted I should have lumped all the MCU movies into one. As opposed to Emperor Clerks is one of the greatest movies of the 90's imo and a great kick off to Kevin Smith's Universe.

Terminator 1 and 2 are all time classics, 3 was pretty lame, Salvation was just okay, and Genesis was doodoofeces. Franchise as a whole I wouldn't rate highly, huge potential they more often than not fall short of.
I am a fan of the View Askew-verse, Clerks 2 is about the weakest of them, and still entertaining. Jay and Silent Bob Strike back is one of the best stoner comedies of all time, just perfectly irreverent and referential. Jason Mewes at his manic best.

I felt really stupid when I was reading a list coming in (I think it was Shootist) and realizing I forgot the Die Hard franchise and it was too late to go back and add it. It would have ranked quite highly on my list as I love love LOVE 60% of this franchise. The first one iconic status speaks for itself , the second one is forgettable , the third one is my favorite in the series and one of my all time favorites , the fourth was really fucking good and I loved seeing Olyphant and the last one was an abomination. Still though the strength of 1,3 and 4 deserve to elevate this franchise. As I said the fifth and last one is largely an abomination by every metric , I regret owning it on Blu Ray but I'm a completist. Don't think I even took the plastic off yet.

I had almost forgotten Die Hard myself and was about to turn my list in when I suddenly remembered it. I pretty much had to redo the entire list because I ranked it all they way up at #4. It's that good and that important.
And I actually enjoyed 2 quite a bit. It ranks 3rd behind 1 and 3 for me, with 4 right behind them. You are correct that 5 is the only bad one.
The consistent level of quality that Die Hard has brought is exactly what I was thinking of when making a franchise list. Frankly it's overall ranking is way too low IMO.

Yeah too that if we wouldn't have went to 15 - it wouldn't have even got brought up is kind of sad. Part of that would have been my fault for forgetting it but I don't think my vote would have been enough for it to crack the top ten. The 11th place franchise on here is another one I was a little shocked didn't make the top ten but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
You're right though , I'd put the consistency of 1-4 up there against just about any other franchise. Even if I think #2 is quite forgettable it's still not bad. Live Free or Die Hard really needs to get some more love and play - I mean Timothy fucking Olyphant.

I think I left Die Hard off my list (can't recall offhand) and felt a little bad about doing so. Like the Terminator franchise, the legendary all-time excellence of the first film and With a Vengeance are likely enough to overcome the mediocrity of Die Hard 2 and the shit show of the new ones. But I had to make some hard cuts. What led me to cut Die Hard (assuming I did) was that the newer movies seemed to betray what made the first three awesome: John McClane as the greatest everyman ever. The new ones seemed to present him, as far as I could tell from the trailers, as some G.I. Joe Expendable action hero. And I have a feeling that, unlike Terminator, there wasn't really a central narrative or universe that was expanded and built upon throughout all the films. Too bad we couldn't just take Terminator and Judgment Day, and Die Hard and With a Vengeance, combine those four movies somehow into a crossover franchise, and then cut out all the fat. Everyman J-McC replacing John Connor in the fight against the machines would've been possibly the most epic thing ever. Would've totally put AvP to shame at least.

I'd rate them - Die Hard With a Vengeance Die Hard Live Free or Die Hard Die Hard 2 A Good Day to Die Hard.

Realized in the VA that it would be smart to list the movies - though I may regret that later with a few of the franchises.

I always start with my own personal movie collection first to make sure I don't miss anything obvious. Die Hard made it to number 4 on my list. I agree with most everyone that 1 and 3 are the best while 2 is a little lackluster. I still think there was a sharp drop-off with 4 and 5 however. I thought the computer hacker story for number 4 was the series just trying to be hip, machine guns>hacked machines. At least with 5 we were back to gun toting terrorists. I also agree with 🤯 that John McClane's character seemed to stray a bit in 4 and 5. Still the first 3 were solid enough to warrant a high placing.

If franchises have too many movies just give a sample of the most well-known or the most successful ones. I don't think most of these franchises will have that many films.

Nope. I started out just listing the number of movies - maybe because their ratings had such discrepancies and almost every movie was named somewhere you thought I did?
Yeah there is probably only one franchise that I REALLY don't plan on naming all the movies. The rest though I should be fine. We'll see.

Oh, I now realise I was referring to your "Critical" section. I didn't read it properly and kinda assumed that was the list of all the movies in the franchise. I don't even know how many there are. I haven't watched any after the second

Very much in the same vein as Terminator, the first Die Hard is one of the greatest action movies of all time, Die Harder is just decent, with a Vengeance lives up to the original in every way, everything after...not so good. Live Free and Good Day are just...bad. Honestly, as generic action movies, I might not have hated them, but Die Hards, they were not. They took the everyman McClain and basically made him generic action bad ass #382273, in the first movie, broken glass clearly hindered him; by this point, he's dodging explosions, falling through buildings, and barely taking damage. It's like John McClain suddenly got all his powers from Unbreakable.

I wonder how Live Free and Good Day would hold up if not for the bar set by DH1 and Vengeance. I'd be tempted to check them out for the first real time to experiment... But I'm also not sure I could dissociate the fact that they're Die Hards.
