Honestly, I think I'd take living with the fear of being caught in a mass shooting in the US over that.

And I'm not sure the government and other sociocultural aspects that come along with China would jive with me either... So honestly again, probably choosing to accept the occasional mass shooting here as the tradeoff price.

For the record, I don't think I or any ad hoc militia would have any chance against an actual military.

In those worst case doomsday scenarios, I'll be thankful to have my guns for self protection against other crazy individuals out there hellbent on looting and taking advantage of chaos and anarchy to impose themselves on others.

If some freedom fighter could make a compelling enough pitch to convince me to join a militia, maybe I join. More than likely though, I say thanks but no thanks and stick to looking out for me and my own.

TBF you've just made a case for the hard left to push for gun ownership. Regardless of whether Trump wins 2020 (I hope he doesn't, obv, but the Dems are also their traditional shitshow of a party at the moment) the populists; the white nationalists who marched down the streets with tiki torches and ran over people with their cars, the neo-Nazis who hold rallies in the streets of America are still energized from getting their guy in the Presidency and are still going to be here.

Actually I didn't.   I disagreed with him on way too many issues.   I still disagree with him on a lot.  But I can tell you right now after watching the shit show that was the Democratic debates I'm strongly considering voting for him in 2020.   

It's also hilarious that people call Trump a dictator when Obama was FAR more authoritarian.   Last I checked Trump hasn't locked up any journalists.   Trump hasn't had the IRS flag the tax returns of his political rivals either.  Executive Orders determining immigration policy from whole cloth?  None of that from Trump either.

But percentage-wise, it takes less than most people think for a successful insurrection. Take the American War of Independence:
 - You're fighting your brothers and sisters, so it's not like anyone's going to be trying TOO hard to kill anyone else
