Been watching the classic Universal horror movies so far this month, my little 2 year old isn’t ready for the gory stuff. But we have watched Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Wolfman, The Mummy, Frankenstein meets Wolfman, and Creature From Black Lagoon. Up until last year I just never got into these(except Frankenstein) and man do they hit the spot.
Frankenstein is still my favorite. I don’t agree with the idea that Bride was so much better for me it’s not. My favorite part of Bride is the opening scene with Lord Byron gratuitously rolling his r’s when he talks.
Creature from the black lagoon hits the spot every time, just love the whole vibe of this one, the dreamy underwater scenes, and that lady is one of the hottest women I’ve ever seen in an old movie.
I feel like the original Wolfman gets slept on or overshadowed by the other movies, but it’s one of the best of the pack for me, love so much about it.
Also the way all the characters casually smoke tobacco as like a recreational event is how I burn herb, I need to burn a blunt with Frankenstein, “Smoke gooooood….GOOOOD!”

Fall of the House of Usher dropped.
So mixed on this. It is basically a story about a business family based on the Perdue family that sees people in it die one by one. And they die in ways related to Poe stories, which is the connection. Feels like two different concepts a Poe creepshow and this business story, smashed together. Like each may work on it's own, but mashed together it feels weird.
If wanting a show bashed on Fall of the House of Usher this is not it.
Saw the first two episodes and it is worth watching as it does oddly hook you, but feels pretty disjointed and uneven. Kind of mid for me so far, maybe better when it is done. Like first episode was meh, second was great.

Ok spoke too soon about this. First episode was on the week side, but after that it does pick up and stay strong. Weird ass story mixing in Poe tales with other tales but the main story, but works.
Not a bad farewell from Flanagan to Netflix.
Things will very mum on what he is planning for Amazon. He did get access to the rights for The Dark Tower though, which could explain why we heard nothing about the Amazon projects.

Tonight I watched Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House. Doc on McKamey Manor, the infamous Haunt where you get 20k if you can survive 8 hours, but really are just tortured by Russ McKamey and tossed out if you are not phased by it.
Doc covers the sadism, the fact it is a scam, and follows some of the people who been through them, then manipulated to work for him. It does not cover the police reports of hospitalizations that followed his abuse.
It is unreal that now three major docs been done on this, but he can still do these "haunts." And these days there is no more crew or staff, it is just him abusing people for sadistic pleasure, either former vets he takes pleasure in breaking down or attractive women he abuses until he can manipulate them over longer periods of time. Local DA keeps insisting that there is nothing they can do if people want him to torture them at his barn.
You can deep dive into this, as Youtube is full of videos with past people who took part in his games, and people trying to expose him.
For people who watch this, Reckless Ben been on exposing them for years, and adds more to it in his video. Him and some of the doc people been trying to shut down Russ for a while now, and he thinks Russ is running a cult basically.

After waiting for what seems like ever, Dark Harvest is finally out. Based on the 2006 Stoker Award novel, story of a town that every year, one night boys have to stop a monster, Saw Tooth Jack, from getting to a church. Boy that kills it sees their family get cash, and they get to leave the town. While this would make a good movie, a twist in the third act makes it a great one. Done by the director of Hard Candy and 30 Days of Nights.
Film was robbed a theater release by Amazon, so launch direct to streaming.
Absolutely amazing holiday story. Faithful to the book not making any major changes at least until the end, and keeping the twist intact. Also keeps the themes of small towns engaging in self-destructive behavior just because it has always been the way things were done.
So far easily takes my film of the season. And time be running out to beat it. Fun story that is well done, in a very horror style of way. Maybe Joe Lynch's Suitable Flesh can beat it still, but very high bar. Very good horror film. Another of those great Stephen King movies that King did not actually write. Sole complaint would be I liked the original ending better. New ending works, but not as good.
Seeing I may be in the minority here as a lot are not liking the film, people who read the book or not. But don't care, I enjoyed it, so if people did not, well, their loss. I do hope the meme that this is a prequel to Children of the Corn pics up with movie people.

Five Nights at Freddy's opened to 78 million, three times budget, in the first two days, despite streaming. On par to be one of the largest horror releases. Host of records broken. Plan to watch it, When Evil Lurks, and Suitable Flesh this weekend. Hellhouse LLC prequel too if it drops in a place I can watch it at. deadline.com/2023/10/box-office-five-nights-at-freddys-1235584788/

Five Nights at Freddy's
Your standard mainstream horror film. Sets up the backstory of the series in a simple narrative shell. Setup to allow follow-ups. While I did not think it was a great film, better than a lot of the standard fare horror junk released. And now the basics are out of the way, should allow for good sequels.
Frankly too, far better than I expected from this. I expected straight trash and was surprised.
///
Just noticed Apple added a four part series on the Enfield Poltergeist with a lot of the original footage shot from the investigations. One of the most contentious paranormal events studied. Almost certainly was fraud, as Janet and Margaret admitted to and were caught faking stuff, but many still insist that it was real.

c I need you to PM me about FNAF. Or anyone else that has seen it. I don’t care about spoilers, I just need to know how violent it is and if my 8 year old can watch it. He won’t stop asking. And I don’t feel like watching the movie by myself and judging.

Not like ultraviolent but do see corpses, some wounds and someone gets bitten in half, but not like gory. PG-13 is the right rating. Personally, I think they would be board as the animatronics are only in maybe 20 minutes or so of the film and most of it deals with a guy trying to raise his sister after his brother disasters and his mom dies and father leaves. The animatronics are also kind of good guys in this if worried about like nightmares. Common Sense Media is great for this sort of thing. They are a family values conservative review site. www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/five-nights-at-freddysDoes the Dog Die is good too for more specific shit. www.doesthedogdie.com/media/950106

RIP Scream 7. Melissa Barrera fired. With Ortega locked into movies already for a few years, losing both leads is a deathblow. Massive rewrite will be needed, and likely a new cast. This could finally get them to bring back Neve and pay her properly. But will add likely a lot of time having to basically restart the film from scratch. screenrant.com/scream-7-melissa-barrera-fired-casting-update/

Huge ass props to Barrera, she condemned hate against jews and muslims, then doubled down against the slaughter of the people of gaza because of the actions of their leaders.
So now Scream is out, her next movie is the believed remake of the Creature of the Black Lagoon for Universal. The director may also move on, as he was not consulted and now lost both of his stars.

Yeah, this is why most actors and actresses disappeared since the conflict started. One wrong word and you can longer work.

Took years but next week is the release, of Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, Andrew Bowser's first film. Bowsers was better known as the weird news guys in viral clips about 7 years ago. Clip from film. Did she turn into Gadget from Rescue Rangers?

Sad about the Barrera/Ortega news for the sake of the franchise. I was really enjoying the new Screams and they are a huge part of that.
Interesting to see where they go from here. Personally I think there’s a chance to obviously bring Neve back and give her the bank but I would also bring back McDreamy and set it up with them two and more importantly …. Neves kids. Raise the stakes a bit with her kids involved and even play on a “Stranger in the house/When a Stranger Calls” genre for the meta references.
The news sucks but there can be light at the end of the tunnel if they choose to be creative with it.

From here they should scrap everything planned and start a new story. Everyone walked since the last film, let the new director take things into a new direction. Once Radio Silence bailed, there was no point in continuing their story anyway.
I agree too, losing both stars, time to bring back Neve. Or else they risk a total bomb at the box. At least get her in for one movie to introduce a new cast and story.

I found Barrera to be completely blank as an actress. If they replaced her with another young brunette I probably wouldn’t notice. Ortega I will notice, but also I feel like we’re losing the thread a little if we get too worked up about them. The main target has rarely been the best part of the Scream movies anyway. Get a group of fun teens, have a fun killer, people will watch it.
But yeah, seems like you scrap the backstories of these kids and move on. Neve’s kids seems ok, but honestly I don’t think there’s a real issue with just making a new story with no one returning.

Strong disagree as Scream is the rarity of horror franchises where the through line and lifeblood was the main characters. Sydney , Dewey and Gail and then they were replicating it with the new four . That’s what has always been different and better than Scream for me is that it’s not just a revolving cast of kids for the killer to mutilate aside from the supporting characters. The best horror is when you care about the characters. It’s why NOES 1,3 and 6 are the best in the series because of Nancy. Halloween had Laurie but then had Jamie and Rachel who were good in 4 and they muted Jamie and killed Rachel in 5 and the movie suffered. Resurrection is maligned because there was no one to root for.

We will just have to agree to disagree I reckon. Sydney and Dewey were barely missed for me in the sixth one and Gail felt shoehorned in. Everyone knew the two wouldn’t be in the sixth and people still came out to see it and like it.
The meta take on Hollywood, the voice disguised killer in a ghost face mask, and a bunch of unwitting teen victims is enough for me to enjoy it.

Abigail is by Radio Silence so I assume it will be a ton of fun. For people that did not pick it up, this is a reimagining of Dracula's Daughter.
Imaginary I am cold on.

Longlegs trailer finally dropped. Perhaps the most hyped horror film this year. Plot from what I seen is Nic Cage plays a serial killer that targets children and leaves Zodiac killer style clues. By Oz Perkin's who did the fantastic The Blackcoat's Daughter.
